Special in Japanese: how do you say it with 特別とくべつ (tokubetsu)?

"Special" in Japanese is 特別とくべつ (とくべつ, tokubetsu) — it becomes 特別とくべつな before a noun, 特別とくべつに before a verb, and 特別とくべつだ at the end of a sentence.

If you searched for "special in Japanese kanji" or "special in Japanese hiragana," here is the short answer: the kanji is 特別とくべつ, the hiragana is とくべつ, and it covers the everyday meaning of "special" in English. But English "special" also means "especially," "limited edition," "unusual," and "a TV special." Japanese hands those jobs to different words, and mixing them up is the fastest way to sound slightly off. This article sorts them out.

The basics

How do you write 特別とくべつ in kanji and hiragana?

特別とくべつ is read とくべつ, and it is normally written in kanji. Hiragana とくべつ appears in children's books, and katakana トクベツ shows up in ads and manga when someone wants it to pop.

  • 特とく (トク) — special, particular
  • 別べつ (ベツ) — separate, different

So the word is literally "particularly separate" — something set apart from the ordinary. That is a nice way to remember it: special things are the ones that stand apart.

特別とくべつです。 — It's special. (polite, a simple statement) 今日きょうは特別とくべつな日ひです。 — Today is a special day. (polite, the most common pattern)

How do you use 特別とくべつ before a noun?

Use 特別とくべつな + noun, because 特別とくべつ is a na-adjective. The connector is な, never の by default and never い.

これは特別とくべつなお茶ちゃです。 — This is a special tea. (polite, offering something nice) 彼女かのじょは私わたしにとって特別とくべつな人ひとです。 — She is a special person to me. (polite, emotional but not over the top)

The rule is the same one you use for 静しずかな部屋へや (a quiet room) or 元気げんきな人ひと (an energetic person). If you can say 静しずかな, you can say 特別とくべつな.

How do you use 特別とくべつ with a verb?

Use 特別とくべつに + verb to say something is done as a special exception or in a special way. The に turns the na-adjective into an adverb.

今日きょうだけ、特別とくべつに教おしえてあげます。 — Just for today, I'll make an exception and tell you. (polite-casual, a favor) お客様きゃくさまには特別とくべつに安やすくしています。 — We're offering a special discount to our customers. (polite, shop talk)

Notice the feeling here. 特別とくべつに is not "especially" in the sense of "very." It means "as a special case, which is not normally done." That small difference matters, and we come back to it in the mistakes section.

How do you say "it is special" at the end of a sentence?

Use 特別とくべつだ (plain) or 特別とくべつです (polite). This is the form you hear in anime when a character says something is or isn't special.

私わたしにとって、あなたは特別とくべつだ。 — To me, you are special. (plain form, a confession-style line) 特別とくべつじゃないよ。普通ふつうだよ。 — It's not special. It's ordinary. (casual, downplaying something)

The opposite of 特別とくべつ is 普通ふつう (ふつう, ordinary), and the two make a handy pair. If something is not special, it is 普通ふつう.

Beyond the basics

What is the difference between 特別とくべつ and 特とくに?

特とくに (とくに) is an adverb meaning "particularly" or "in particular," while 特別とくべつ describes something as special. They share the 特とく kanji, which is why learners blur them.

特とくに好すきなのはラーメンです。 — What I like in particular is ramen. (polite, picking one from a group) 特とくに何なにもありません。 — There's nothing in particular. (polite, the standard "nothing much")

That second sentence is the one to learn. When someone asks 何なにかありますか and you have nothing to say, 特とくにありません is the natural answer. Saying 特別とくべつにありません would sound strange, because 特別とくべつ does not carry the "in particular" meaning. In the same way, 特とくに意味いみはない means "there's no particular meaning," not "there's no special meaning."

How does スペシャル differ from 特別とくべつ?

スペシャル is the katakana loanword for "special," and it mostly labels things: menus, TV episodes, limited sets. It sounds a little more commercial and a little more fun than 特別とくべつ.

スペシャルランチをください。 — The special lunch, please. (polite, ordering at a restaurant) 今夜こんやは二時間にじかんスペシャルです。 — Tonight is a two-hour special. (neutral, TV announcement)

You will see 〜スペシャル on TV listings constantly, especially for long holiday episodes and anime events. Compare 特別番組とくべつばんぐみ (とくべつばんぐみ, a special program), which is the more formal, broadcaster-style name for the same idea. You would not say スペシャルな人ひと to a person you love; that sounds like a joke or an ad. For people and feelings, use 特別とくべつ.

What is 特別扱とくべつあつかい?

特別扱とくべつあつかい (とくべつあつかい) means "special treatment," and it can be good or bad depending on who is speaking.

先生せんせいは彼かれを特別扱とくべつあつかいしている。 — The teacher is giving him special treatment. (neutral to critical, observation) 特別扱とくべつあつかいしないでください。 — Please don't treat me specially. (polite, humble, common among people who don't want a fuss)

This is a very natural phrase in school and workplace stories. In anime, a character who says 特別扱とくべつあつかいはいらない is usually a proud rookie who wants to earn respect rather than receive it.

What does 限定げんてい mean, and why is it everywhere in Akihabara?

限定げんてい (げんてい) means "limited," and 〜限定げんてい turns almost anything into a special, restricted edition. It is the word behind many things English would call "special" or "exclusive."

期間限定きかんげんていのコラボカフェに行いきたい。 — I want to go to the limited-time collab cafe. (casual, a typical Akihabara plan) 数量すうりょう限定げんていなので、早はやめに来きてください。 — It's limited in quantity, so please come early. (polite, shop sign)

Common patterns include 期間限定きかんげんてい (limited time), 数量すうりょう限定げんてい (limited quantity), 店舗てんぽ限定げんてい (store-only), and 初回しょかい限定版げんていばん (first-press limited edition). If you shop for figures, CDs, or Blu-rays, you will read these on tags every day. A 限定げんてい item is special because it is hard to get. A 特別とくべつ item is special because it is a notch above ordinary. English "special edition" can be either, so choose by meaning.

What is the difference between 特別とくべつ and 特殊とくしゅ?

特殊とくしゅ (とくしゅ) means "unusual, specialized, or of a particular kind," and it does not mean "wonderful." It describes things that differ from the standard in a technical or functional way.

特殊とくしゅな技術ぎじゅつが必要ひつようです。 — Special (specialized) technology is required. (polite, technical) 特殊部隊とくしゅぶたいが出動しゅつどうした。 — The special forces were dispatched. (neutral, news and anime)

特殊効果とくしゅこうか is "special effects" in film, and 特殊能力とくしゅのうりょく is a "special ability" in a game or fantasy anime. If your sentence is about a feeling, a person, or a gift, use 特別とくべつ. If it is about a function, equipment, or category, 特殊とくしゅ is the likely word.

How heavy is 特別とくべつ in anime?

Very heavy. 特別とくべつな存在そんざい (とくべつなそんざい, "a special existence") is one of the most emotional phrases in anime and drama. It is used when someone tells another character they matter more than anyone else.

君きみは僕ぼくにとって特別とくべつな存在そんざいだ。 — You are a special existence to me. (plain form, a heartfelt line) 俺おれは特別とくべつなんかじゃない。 — I'm nothing special. (casual and rough, a hero refusing praise)

Notice that 特別とくべつなんかじゃない is a common way to deny being special: なんか adds a self-dismissive "or anything." You will hear it from protagonists who have just been told they are the chosen one. In real life, a Japanese speaker is usually more modest, and 特別とくべつ about a person is saved for serious or romantic moments.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing 特別とくべつの and 特別とくべつな at random. Both exist, and both are grammatical. 特別とくべつな is the everyday form (特別とくべつな日ひ, 特別とくべつな人ひと). 特別とくべつの appears in fixed or formal phrases, such as 特別とくべつの事情じじょう (special circumstances) in official writing. As a learner, default to 特別とくべつな, and notice 特別とくべつの when you read it.
  • Using 特別とくべつ where 特とくに is needed. 特別とくべつにありません is wrong; 特とくにありません is right. 特とくに means "in particular," while 特別とくべつ means "special."
  • Translating every "especially" as 特別とくべつに. 特別とくべつに means "as a special exception," not "very." For "especially" in the sense of "most of all," use 特とくに, as in 特とくに夏なつが好すきです (I like summer especially).
  • Using スペシャルな for people. スペシャルな人ひと sounds like an advertisement. Use 特別とくべつな人ひと.
  • Mixing up 特別とくべつ and 特殊とくしゅ. 特殊とくしゅな人ひと does not mean "a special person." It suggests someone unusual or odd, which may not be what you intended. Use 特別とくべつな人ひと for someone dear to you.

特別とくべつ vs スペシャル vs 特とくに vs 特殊とくしゅ vs 限定げんてい

Word Reading Core meaning Example
特別とくべつ とくべつ special, exceptional 特別とくべつな日ひ
スペシャル スペシャル special (label, TV, menu) スペシャルランチ
特とくに とくに particularly, in particular 特とくに好すき
特殊とくしゅ とくしゅ specialized, unusual 特殊とくしゅな技術ぎじゅつ
限定げんてい げんてい limited, exclusive 期間限定きかんげんてい

Practice

Build each answer before opening it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: the same kanji, two different words.

1. Say "Today is a special day" using 特別とくべつ.

Show answer

今日きょうは特別とくべつな日ひです — 特別とくべつ is a na-adjective, so it takes な before a noun.

2. Say "Just for today, I'll tell you as a special exception" using 特別とくべつ.

Show answer

今日きょうだけ、特別とくべつに教おしえてあげます — 特別とくべつに is the adverb form, meaning "as a special case."

3. A friend asks 何なにか食たべたいものある? and you have no preference. Which is natural, 特とくにないよ or 特別とくべつにないよ?

Show answer

特とくにないよ — 特とくに means "in particular," so this is "nothing in particular." 特別とくべつ does not carry that meaning.

4. Say "I like summer especially" (summer above all other seasons).

Show answer

特とくに夏なつが好すきです — 特とくに picks out one thing from a group. 特別とくべつに夏なつが好すきです would sound like a "special exception," which is not what you mean.

5. You see 期間限定きかんげんてい on a sign at a cafe. What does it tell you?

Show answer

It is available for a limited time only — 期間きかん means "period" and 限定げんてい means "limited."

6. You want to say "She is a special person to me." Which word fits: 特別とくべつ, 特殊とくしゅ, or スペシャル?

Show answer

特別とくべつ — 彼女かのじょは私わたしにとって特別とくべつな人ひとです. 特殊とくしゅ suggests "unusual" and スペシャル sounds like a label or an ad.

7. A game has a character with a special ability. Which word is the natural choice for 特殊能力とくしゅのうりょく versus 特別とくべつ能力のうりょく?

Show answer

特殊能力とくしゅのうりょく — 特殊とくしゅ describes a specialized or unusual function, which is how "special abilities" are named in games and anime.

8. Say "Please don't give me special treatment."

Show answer

特別扱とくべつあつかいしないでください — 特別扱とくべつあつかい means "special treatment," and しないでください is the polite negative request.

9. A hero says he is nothing special. Make the casual line using 特別とくべつ.

Show answer

俺おれは特別とくべつなんかじゃない — なんか adds a self-dismissive tone, and じゃない is the casual negative of だ.

10. A TV listing says 二時間にじかんスペシャル. What kind of thing is it?

Show answer

A two-hour special episode or program — スペシャル labels TV programs, menus, and sets, and the formal broadcaster term is 特別番組とくべつばんぐみ.

FAQ

What is "special" in Japanese kanji? 特別とくべつ is the standard kanji for "special." The two characters are 特とく (particular) and 別べつ (separate), read とくべつ.

What is "special" in Japanese hiragana? とくべつ. It is usually written in kanji, but hiragana appears in materials for children and for learners.

Is 特別とくべつ a noun or an adjective? It works as a na-adjective: 特別とくべつな日ひ, 特別とくべつだ, 特別とくべつに. It also forms compounds like 特別扱とくべつあつかい and 特別番組とくべつばんぐみ.

Can I use 特別とくべつの instead of 特別とくべつな? Sometimes. 特別とくべつな is the everyday form. 特別とくべつの is more common in formal, fixed phrases like 特別とくべつの事情じじょう, so as a learner it is safe to default to 特別とくべつな.

Is スペシャル the same as 特別とくべつ? They overlap, but スペシャル is a label for menus, TV shows, and limited sets, while 特別とくべつ can describe people, feelings, and days. For something personal, use 特別とくべつ.

How do I say "limited edition" in Japanese? 限定版げんていばん (げんていばん) is "limited edition," and 初回しょかい限定版げんていばん is "first-press limited edition." Both are very common on Akihabara shelves.

I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime, so most of the example sentences on this blog come from lines I've actually heard in shows and in lessons. 特別とくべつ is one of the first words learners pick up and one of the easiest to overuse, and sorting it from 特とくに saves a lot of awkward moments.
