Perfect in Japanese: how do you say it with 完璧かんぺき (kanpeki)?

"Perfect" in Japanese is 完璧かんぺき (かんぺき, kanpeki) — a na-adjective, so it becomes 完璧かんぺきな before a noun and 完璧かんぺきに before a verb.

If you searched for "perfect in Japanese kanji" or "perfect in Japanese hiragana," here is the short answer: the kanji is 完璧かんぺき, the hiragana is かんぺき, and the word is more specific than English "perfect." It means flawless — nothing to fix. English also uses "perfect" for "ideal," "exact," and "complete," and Japanese splits those jobs between several words. This article sorts them out.

The basics

How do you write 完璧かんぺき in kanji and hiragana?

完璧かんぺき is read かんぺき, and both characters are normally written in kanji. The hiragana かんぺき appears in children's books or when a writer wants a softer look, and katakana カンペキ shows up in manga and ads for punch.

  • 完かん (カン) — whole, finished, complete
  • 璧へき (ヘキ, which changes to ペキ after ん) — a jade disc, a flawless treasure

So the word is literally "complete jade." The second character is rare on its own, so most learners memorize the whole word as one unit and do not try to write 璧へき by hand. You will type it, not draw it.

完璧かんぺきです。 — It's perfect. (polite, a clean one-word verdict) 完璧かんぺきだ! — Perfect! (plain form, exclaimed or said to yourself)

How do you use 完璧かんぺき before a noun?

Use 完璧かんぺきな + noun, because 完璧かんぺき is a na-adjective. That means the connector is な, never の and never い.

完璧かんぺきな計画けいかくですね。 — That's a perfect plan, isn't it? (polite, praising someone's idea) 彼かれは完璧かんぺきな笑顔えがおで答こたえた。 — He answered with a perfect smile. (neutral, written/narration style)

The rule behind it is the same one you use for 静しずかな部屋へや (a quiet room) or 元気げんきな人ひと (an energetic person). If you can say 静しずかな, you can say 完璧かんぺきな.

How do you use 完璧かんぺき with a verb?

Use 完璧かんぺきに + verb to say something was done perfectly. The に turns the na-adjective into an adverb.

完璧かんぺきに覚おぼえました。 — I memorized it perfectly. (polite, about your own study) この漢字かんじ、完璧かんぺきに書かけるよ。 — I can write this kanji perfectly. (casual, to a friend)

Notice that 完璧かんぺきに describes the quality of the action: no mistakes, no gaps. This is the key to the rest of the article, because it is exactly where 完璧かんぺき and 完全かんぜん part ways.

What about "It's perfect" as a reply?

Say 完璧かんぺきです (polite) or 完璧かんぺき! (casual) when something meets the standard completely. Add ね or よ for a warmer tone.

この色いろ、完璧かんぺきですね。 — This color is perfect, isn't it? (polite, shared opinion) 天気てんきも完璧かんぺきだし、行いこう! — The weather's perfect too, so let's go! (casual, friends planning)

Beyond the basics

What is the difference between 完璧かんぺき and 完全かんぜん?

完璧かんぺき means "flawless"; 完全かんぜん (かんぜん, kanzen) means "complete, total, entirely." They overlap only when something is both whole and flawless. In practice 完全かんぜん is far more common as an adverb that intensifies a verb, and 完璧かんぺき is the one you use to judge quality.

約束やくそくを完全かんぜんに忘わすれていた。 — I completely forgot the promise. (neutral, an honest confession) 完全かんぜんに理解りかいしました。 — I fully understand. (polite, "all of it, with nothing left out") 完璧かんぺきに理解りかいしました。 — I understood it flawlessly. (polite, sounds like you are proud of how well you got it)

Look at the first sentence. "I completely forgot" is 完全かんぜんに忘わすれた. 完璧かんぺきに忘わすれた is not what a native speaker would pick, because forgetting is not something you do well. Nobody grades a memory lapse for being flawless. The test is simple: if "flawlessly" makes sense in English, 完璧かんぺき probably works. If you only mean "totally," use 完全かんぜん.

English idea Japanese Why
completely forgot 完全かんぜんに忘わすれた "total," not "well"
flawless performance 完璧かんぺきな演技えんぎ judging quality
a complete victory 完全かんぜん勝利しょうり "no part was lost"
perfect pronunciation 完璧かんぺきな発音はつおん no mistakes

How is パーフェクト used?

パーフェクト is the katakana loanword for English "perfect," and it is rarer and more dramatic than 完璧かんぺき. You hear it in sports commentary, game announcements, and anime shouts.

パーフェクト! — Perfect! (excited, an exclamation after a flawless move) パーフェクトゲームを達成たっせいした。 — He achieved a perfect game. (neutral, sports reporting)

A useful rule: パーフェクト is a label for a named achievement (a perfect game, a perfect score in a game system), while 完璧かんぺき is the everyday word for judging anything. If you replace every 完璧かんぺき in your speech with パーフェクト, you will sound like a character in a quiz show.

What do people say in everyday conversation?

In conversation, ばっちり (or バッチリ) is the casual, upbeat word for "just right, all set." It is not a full synonym of 完璧かんぺき, but it is what friends actually say when preparation, timing, or fit is spot-on.

準備じゅんびばっちり! — All set! (casual, ready for something) タイミングもバッチリだったね。 — The timing was perfect too, wasn't it? (casual, looking back on a lucky moment) メイクはばっちりだよ。 — My makeup is on point. (casual, light and cheerful)

Another everyday phrase for praise is 言いうことなし (いうことなし), literally "nothing to say," meaning I have no complaints at all.

この味あじは言いうことなしだ。 — This taste leaves nothing to be desired. (neutral to warm, about food or craftsmanship)

Where 完璧かんぺき states a fact ("flawless"), 言いうことなし reports your reaction ("I can't find fault"). Both are compliments, but 言いうことなし sounds more like a person talking.

How does 完璧かんぺき sound in anime?

In anime, 「完璧かんぺきだ」 is usually delivered by a confident character — a strategist, a rival, or a villain who believes the plan cannot fail. Because 完璧かんぺき means "no flaws," it sets up the story: when someone calls their plan 完璧かんぺき, expect a flaw to show up soon.

この作戦さくせんは完璧かんぺきだ。 — This operation is perfect. (plain, confident, a typical "plan" line) 完璧かんぺきだと思おもったのに…。 — I thought it was perfect... (plain, disappointed, when the flaw appears)

You will also hear パーフェクト! shouted in game-like or sporty shows, because the loanword feels more like a scoreboard than a judgment. When you listen for 完璧かんぺき, notice the crisp ぺ after the ん: that sharp sound is what makes the word feel so final.

What is 完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎ, and how do you describe a perfectionist?

完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎ (かんぺきしゅぎ) means "perfectionism," and a perfectionist is a 完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎ者しゃ (かんぺきしゅぎしゃ). The ending 主義しゅぎ is the same "-ism" you see in 資本主義しほんしゅぎ or 個人主義こじんしゅぎ.

私わたしは完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎなので、提出ていしゅつ前まえに何度なんども見直みなおします。 — I'm a perfectionist, so I check many times before submitting. (polite, self-description) 完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎすぎると疲つかれるよ。 — If you're too much of a perfectionist, you get tired. (casual, friendly advice)

Japanese speakers often use 完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎ as a light warning, not as a pure compliment. It admits you care about quality but also hints that you may be hard on yourself.

What do you say when someone calls you perfect?

Deny it politely: 「完璧かんぺきじゃないです」 or 「まだまだです」. In Japanese conversation, accepting a big compliment head-on can sound proud, so people usually step down from it first.

いえいえ、完璧かんぺきじゃないです。 — Oh no, it's not perfect. (polite, humble reply to praise) まだまだです。 — I still have a long way to go. (polite, the classic modest answer) ありがとうございます。でも、まだ直なおすところがあります。 — Thank you. But there are still things to fix. (polite, thanks plus modesty)

If you want to sound natural and not fake-humble, say thanks first, then add the small step down. Skipping the thanks sounds cold.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 完璧かんぺきの + noun. 完璧かんぺきの計画けいかく sounds wrong because 完璧かんぺき is a na-adjective. Use 完璧かんぺきな計画けいかく. 完璧かんぺき can end a sentence as 完璧かんぺきだ or 完璧かんぺきです without any の at all.
  • Using 完璧かんぺき when you mean "completely." 完璧かんぺきに忘わすれた and 完璧かんぺきに同意どういする are odd. Use 完全かんぜんに忘わすれた and 完全かんぜんに同意どういする when you mean "totally," not "flawlessly."
  • Using "perfect" for everything the English way. English "perfect for you" is あなたにぴったり, and "perfect timing" is ちょうどいいタイミング or ばっちりのタイミング. English "a perfect score" on a test is 満点まんてん (まんてん), not パーフェクト.
  • Calling something 完璧かんぺき when it is merely good. Because 完璧かんぺき means "no flaws," overusing it can sound exaggerated or even sarcastic. Reach for いいですね, すばらしい, or すごい when you just mean good or impressive. For praising effort, see よくやった・さすが.
  • Using 完璧かんぺき for "almost perfect." If it is nearly there, say ほぼ完璧かんぺき or ほとんど完璧かんぺき. The ほとんど・ほぼ article explains the difference.

完璧かんぺき vs 完全かんぜん vs ぴったり

Word Core idea Use it for Example
完璧かんぺき flawless judging quality 完璧かんぺきな答こたえ
完全かんぜん complete, total intensifying "all of it" 完全かんぜんに忘わすれた
パーフェクト perfect (loanword) sports, games, drama パーフェクトゲーム
ばっちり just right, all set preparation and timing 準備じゅんびばっちり
言いうことなし no complaints reacting to quality 味あじは言いうことなし
ぴったり exact fit sizes, timing, matches サイズがぴったり

If you want to say "exactly right" about a statement, you will want the phrases in そのとおり・ちょうど, not 完璧かんぺき.

Practice

Build each answer before opening it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair — the same "completely" idea with the two different words.

1. Fill in the connector: 完璧かんぺき__計画けいかく

Show answer

完璧かんぺきな計画けいかく — 完璧かんぺき is a na-adjective, so the connector before a noun is な. 完璧かんぺきの計画けいかく is not natural.

2. Say "I memorized it perfectly" in polite Japanese.

Show answer

完璧かんぺきに覚おぼえました — 完璧かんぺきに is the adverb form, so it modifies the verb 覚おぼえる.

3. Say "I completely forgot." Use 完全かんぜん or 完璧かんぺき?

Show answer

完全かんぜんに忘わすれた — you mean "totally," not "flawlessly." Forgetting is not judged for quality, so 完璧かんぺきに忘わすれた is odd.

4. Say "I understood it flawlessly" and keep the proud tone.

Show answer

完璧かんぺきに理解りかいしました — 完璧かんぺき focuses on the quality: no gaps, no mistakes. This is the pair to question 3.

5. Your friend asks if you are ready for the trip. Give a casual "All set!"

Show answer

準備じゅんびばっちり! — ばっちり is the everyday casual word for "just right, all set." 完璧かんぺき would also work, but sounds more formal.

6. How do you say "perfectionist"?

Show answer

完璧主義かんぺきしゅぎ者しゃ(かんぺきしゅぎしゃ) — 完璧かんぺき plus 主義しゅぎ ("-ism") plus 者もの ("person").

7. Someone says あなたの発表はっぴょうは完璧かんぺきでした. Give a polite, humble reply.

Show answer

いえいえ、完璧かんぺきじゃないです。まだまだです。 — stepping down from a big compliment sounds modest, which is the expected move in Japanese conversation.

8. Which is correct for "a perfect test score": パーフェクト or 満点まんてん?

Show answer

満点まんてん — 満点まんてん (まんてん) is the standard word for a full score on a test. パーフェクト is a loanword mostly used in games and sports.

9. Say "This taste leaves nothing to be desired" using a set phrase.

Show answer

この味あじは言いうことなしだ — 言いうことなし means "I have nothing to say against it," a warm way to praise something.

10. Say "It is almost perfect" in Japanese.

Show answer

ほぼ完璧かんぺきです — ほぼ means "almost," and 完璧かんぺきです stays in the polite form. ほとんど完璧かんぺき is also possible.
