Favorite in Japanese: 一番好いちばんすき, お気に入きにいり, 推おし and when to use each

"Favorite" in Japanese is most naturally 一番好いちばんすき (ichiban suki, "like the most"), as in 一番好いちばんすきなアニメは〜です, "My favorite anime is ...". For a favorite item you own or save, use お気に入きにいり; for a favorite character or idol you support, use 推おし.

Japanese has no single word that does the job of English "favorite." Instead it has a small toolbox, and each tool is built for a different kind of favorite: a favorite thing you like, a favorite thing you keep close, a favorite person you cheer for. Pick the right tool and you sound natural. Reach for a dictionary translation and you end up saying something odd.

The basics

What is the most natural way to say "my favorite ___"?

Say 一番好いちばんすきな + noun. 一番いちばん means "number one" or "the most," and 好すき means "liked," so the phrase is literally "the ___ I like the most."

一番好いちばんすきなアニメは「ハイキュー」です。 — My favorite anime is Haikyu!! (polite, the standard answer pattern) 一番好いちばんすきな色いろは青あおです。 — My favorite color is blue. (polite, everyday)

Written out, this is 一番好いちばんすき in kanji and いちばんすき in hiragana. There is no katakana version of the natural phrase, because it is made of native Japanese words. The structure is the same one you will meet in the 一番いちばん superlative: 一番いちばん sits in front of an adjective or a verb-like word and says "most."

Do you really need 一番いちばん when you ask the question?

Usually not. This is the part textbooks skip. In English, "What's your favorite food?" has the word "favorite" in it. In Japanese, the plain question is 好すきな食べ物たべものは何なんですか, literally "As for liked food, what is it?"

好すきな食べ物たべものは何なんですか。 — What's your favorite food? (polite, the default question) 好すきな音楽おんがくはありますか。 — Do you have a favorite kind of music? (polite, asks if there is one)

When you ask about 好すきな〜, the listener understands "the one you like best" from context, because people tend to answer with one top item. Adding 一番いちばん to the question is fine, and it sounds a little more pointed, like "if you had to pick just one." Adding it to the answer is where it matters most, since the answer is where you want to say "this is the top one."

Why is it 好すきな and not 好すきの?

好すき is a na-adjective, so it connects to a noun with な: 好すきな食べ物たべもの, 好すきな人ひと, 好すきな色いろ. It does not take い the way 高たかい or 美味おいしい do. If you ever mix up which adjectives take な and which take い, the い-adjectives vs な-adjectives article untangles it.

好すきな映画えいがを教おしえてください。 — Please tell me your favorite movie. (polite, a request) これは私わたしの好すきな歌うたです。 — This is a song I like. (polite, "my favorite" in context)

What is the particle pattern in 〜が一番好いちばんすき?

When you start from the favorite itself, you flip the sentence: A が一番好いちばんすき means "A is the one I like the most." The が marks the thing being picked out of a group.

果物くだものの中なかでは、りんごが一番好いちばんすきです。 — Among fruits, I like apples the best. (polite, picking from a group) どのキャラが一番好いちばんすき? — Which character do you like the most? (casual, to a friend)

Compare 好すきな果物くだものはりんごです ("my favorite fruit is apples") with りんごが一番好いちばんすきです ("apples are the ones I like best"). They mean nearly the same. The second is a bit more spoken and more emotional. If your own favorite is not りんご, fruit in Japanese spells the common fruits in hiragana, katakana and kanji, so you can finish 好すきな果物くだものは〜です yourself.

Beyond the basics

What is お気に入きにいり, and how is it different from 好すき?

お気に入きにいり (okiniiri, おきにいり) is a noun for something you have taken a liking to and keep in your life: a favorite café, a favorite jacket, a favorite pen. It is less about "I like this the most" and more about "this one has earned a spot with me." It is also the word on the Favorites button on websites and apps, the star or heart you tap to save something.

このカフェは私わたしのお気に入きにいりです。 — This café is my favorite. (polite, a place you keep returning to) お気に入きにいりのシャツを着きて行いく。 — I'll wear my favorite shirt. (neutral, a possession you love) お気に入きにいりに追加ついかする。 — Add to favorites. (neutral, the button on an app)

Two grammar notes. First, the possessive is お気に入きにいりの + noun, with の, not な: お気に入きにいりのカフェ. Second, お気に入きにいり is not a good answer to "What's your favorite food?" Saying 私わたしのお気に入きにいりは寿司すしです sounds like sushi is a loyal companion rather than a food you like. For categories like food, music, sports and colors, use 好すきな〜 or 一番好いちばんすき.

What about 大好だいすき? Is that "favorite"?

大好だいすき (daisuki, だいすき) means "love" or "really like." The 大だい adds strength. It is not strictly "favorite," because it does not say "number one." But in conversation it often does the same job, because you only say 大好だいすき about the things at the top of your list.

私わたしはラーメンが大好だいすきです。 — I love ramen. (polite, strong liking) この曲きょく、大好だいすき! — I love this song! (casual, excited)

If you want the heart-level version of this word and how it differs from 愛いとしている, see I love you in Japanese. For "favorite," think of 大好だいすき as a volume knob on 好すき, and 一番いちばん as a ranking.

Is there a word for "favorite food" specifically?

Yes: 好物こうぶつ (こうぶつ, koubutsu), a "favorite dish or treat." It sounds a bit grown-up and slightly formal, like something a parent or a grandparent says.

カレーは父ちちの好物こうぶつです。 — Curry is my father's favorite food. (polite, talking about someone else) 好物こうぶつは何なんですか。 — What is your favorite food? (polite, a little old-fashioned)

You will hear 好物こうぶつ in writing, in self-introductions and when people talk about someone else's tastes. Among friends, the normal question is simply 好すきな食べ物たべものは?

How does 推おし fit in?

推おし (oshi, おし) is the fandom word. It means the person or character you support most: your favorite idol in a group, your favorite character in a series. It comes from the verb 推おす, "to recommend" or "to back." Your 推おし is not just someone you like. It is the one you are rooting for.

私わたしの推おしは主人公しゅじんこうのライバルです。 — My favorite is the main character's rival. (polite, fandom) 推おしキャラは誰だれ? — Who's your favorite character? (casual, to a fellow fan) 最さい推おしはこの子こ! — This one is my number-one favorite! (casual, the strongest form)

Related forms you will see online: 推おしキャラ (favorite character), 推おしメン (favorite member of a group), 最さい推おし (the top 推おし, when you have several), and 箱はこ推おし (loving the whole group or series equally). More of this vocabulary is in Japanese otaku slang.

Note that 推おし is only for people and characters. You cannot say 推おしの食べ物たべもの for a favorite food in normal speech, except as a joke. For a favorite dish, use 好物こうぶつ or 好すきな食べ物たべもの.

How does it sound in anime and fandom?

Watch for three habits. First, characters almost never say フェイバリット. They say 好すき, 大好だいすき, or 一番いちばん. Second, fandom talk uses 推おし constantly, including as a verb: 推おしてる (I'm backing them) or 推おせる (worth backing). Third, answers are short. Nobody replies with a full sentence in a casual setting.

一番好いちばんすきなのは、やっぱりこの回かいかな。 — I guess this episode is my favorite. (casual, thinking aloud) 誰だれ推おし? — Who's your pick? (casual, short fan question) この人ひと、ずっと推おしてる。 — I've been backing this person for a long time. (casual, ongoing fandom)

The pattern 〜かな at the end softens a guess, like "I think it's probably ...".

What about katakana: is フェイバリット ever used?

フェイバリット (feibaritto) exists, but it is rare. You will see it in brand names, playlists and advertising: フェイバリットソング, フェイバリットリスト. In everyday talk, it can sound like an English translation or a slogan. If a learner says フェイバリットな食べ物たべものは何なんですか, a Japanese speaker will understand, but it will sound strange.

Is 得意とくい a kind of favorite?

No. 得意とくい (とくい, tokui) means "good at" or "one's strong point." It is easy to confuse because both words can appear in a self-introduction, but they say different things.

料理りょうりが得意とくいです。 — I'm good at cooking. (polite, a skill) 料理りょうりが好すきです。 — I like cooking. (polite, a feeling)

You can like something without being good at it, and be good at something without liking it. 得意とくい never means "favorite."

How do the options compare at a glance?

Word Reading Best for Example
一番好いちばんすき いちばんすき "My favorite ___" in general 一番好いちばんすきな色いろは青あおです
好すきな〜 すきな Questions, "what do you like?" 好すきな食べ物たべものは何なんですか
大好だいすき だいすき Strong love, informal この曲きょく、大好だいすき!
お気に入きにいり おきにいり An item, place, or saved item お気に入きにいりのカフェ
好物こうぶつ こうぶつ A favorite food, mature tone カレーは好物こうぶつです
推おし おし Idol or character you support 推おしキャラは誰だれ?
フェイバリット — Brand names, slogans only フェイバリットソング

Common mistakes

  • Translating "favorite" word for word. There is no single equivalent. Choose from 一番好いちばんすき, お気に入きにいり, 推おし, 好物こうぶつ depending on what kind of favorite you mean.
  • Using お気に入きにいり for food or colors. お気に入きにいり belongs to specific things in your life, not categories. Say 好すきな食べ物たべもの, not お気に入きにいりの食べ物たべものは寿司すしです, unless you mean a specific dish you keep ordering.
  • Saying 好すきの + noun. 好すき is a na-adjective, so it is 好すきな食べ物たべもの.
  • Putting 一番いちばん in every question. 好すきな〜は何なんですか is already the normal "favorite" question. 一番いちばん is for emphasis.
  • Using 推おし for anything other than people and characters. You can 推おす a person or character you cheer for, but not a snack.
  • Using フェイバリット in conversation. It is understood but sounds foreign. Use 好すきな〜 or 一番好いちばんすき.
  • Confusing 得意とくい with a favorite. 得意とくい is "good at," not "liked."

Practice

Build each answer before you open it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair, and so are 7 and 8: the contrast is the lesson.

1. Say "My favorite anime is Haikyu!!" in polite Japanese.

Show answer

一番好いちばんすきなアニメは「ハイキュー」です — 一番好いちばんすきな + noun is the standard pattern for "my favorite ___."

2. Ask "What's your favorite food?" the way a Japanese speaker would.

Show answer

好すきな食べ物たべものは何なんですか — Japanese does not need 一番いちばん in the question. 好すきな〜 already means "the one you like."

3. Complete the phrase: 「好すき__食べ物たべもの」 (a food I like).

Show answer

な — 好すき is a na-adjective, so it takes な before a noun.

4. Complete the phrase: 「お気に入きにいり__カフェ」 (my favorite café).

Show answer

の — お気に入きにいり is a noun, so it takes の. This is the pair to question 3: 好すきな versus お気に入きにいりの.

5. You tap a star on a website to save a page. What is the button called?

Show answer

お気に入きにいり — it is the word for the Favorites feature in apps and browsers.

6. A friend asks 誰だれが一番好いちばんすき? about characters in a series. Which fandom word could you use in your answer for "my top pick"?

Show answer

最さい推おし (or just 推おし) — 最さい means "most," so 最さい推おし is the character you back above all others.

7. Say "I love this song!" in casual speech.

Show answer

この曲きょく、大好だいすき! — 大好だいすき adds strength to 好すき and works as an excited "favorite" in conversation.

8. Say "I'm good at cooking." Why is this not "My favorite thing is cooking"?

Show answer

料理りょうりが得意とくいです — 得意とくい means "skilled at," not "liked." This is the pair to question 7: a feeling (大好だいすき) versus a skill (得意とくい).

9. A parent says カレーは父ちちの好物こうぶつです. What does 好物こうぶつ tell you?

Show answer

Curry is the father's favorite food — 好物こうぶつ is specific to food, and it sounds slightly mature or formal.

10. Why would a Japanese speaker find フェイバリットな食べ物たべもの odd?

Show answer

フェイバリット is a katakana word used mainly in slogans and brand names. In daily speech, native words like 好すき and 一番いちばん are the natural choice.

Introduce your 推おし in a trial lesson, and decide which of 一番好いちばんすき, お気に入きにいり and 推おし fits a food, a bag and a character.

FAQ

What is "favorite" in Japanese kanji? There is no single kanji word for "favorite". The usual words are 一番好いちばんすき, お気に入きにいり and 好物こうぶつ. 好こう is the kanji for "like," and 気き in お気に入きにいり means "spirit" or "mood" (気に入きにいる means "to take a liking to").

What is "favorite" in Japanese hiragana? The most common forms in hiragana are いちばんすき, おきにいり, すきな and こうぶつ. For fandom talk, おし is written in hiragana, but 推おし in kanji is more common.

What is "favorite" in Japanese katakana? フェイバリット (feibaritto), a loanword from English "favorite." It is used in names and advertising, not in everyday conversation. Katakana is also sometimes used for emphasis, as in オシ, but 推おし is the usual spelling.

Do I have to say 一番いちばん every time? No. In questions, 好すきな〜は何なんですか is enough. In answers, 一番いちばん is useful when you want to say clearly "this is number one," but 〜が好すきです alone is natural too.

Can I use お気に入きにいり for a person? Yes, but it has a different feel. 先生せんせいのお気に入きにいりの生徒せいと means "the teacher's pet," a student the teacher favors. It is not "my favorite person." For a person you support or admire, 推おし fits better in fandom, and 一番好いちばんすきな人ひと in ordinary talk.

How do I ask someone's favorite hobby or what they like in a self-introduction? Use 趣味しゅみは何なんですか for hobbies and 好すきな〜 for specifics. Ideas for hobbies are in Japanese hobbies vocabulary, and the full self-introduction pattern is in Japanese self-introduction.
