Exercise in Japanese: 運動うんどう (うんどう), 運動不足うんどうぶそく, 筋きんトレ, and ラジオ体操たいそう

"Exercise" in Japanese is 運動うんどう (うんどう): 毎日まいにち運動うんどうしています means "I exercise every day". Not getting enough exercise is 運動不足うんどうぶそく (うんどうぶそく), and strength training is 筋きんトレ (きんトレ). For an exercise in a textbook, the word is completely different: 練習問題れんしゅうもんだい (れんしゅうもんだい).

運動うんどう is one of the first health words learners need, and it opens a lot of conversation: what sport you play, whether you go to the gym, how you feel about being 運動不足うんどうぶそく after a winter indoors. Japanese also has some unique exercise culture, like ラジオ体操たいそう, the radio calisthenics many people remember from childhood. This post covers the words, the everyday phrases, and the other English "exercise".

How do you say "exercise" in Japanese?

What does 運動うんどう mean?

運動うんどう (うんどう) is physical exercise or sport in general. 運動うんどうする is "to exercise".

毎日まいにち運動うんどうしています。 — I exercise every day. (polite) 最近さいきん、全然ぜんぜん運動うんどうしていない。 — I haven't been exercising at all lately. (casual, guilty)

運うん means "carry, move" and 動どう means "move", so 運動うんどう is literally "moving". For the related word 健康けんこう, see healthy in Japanese.

What does 運動不足うんどうぶそく mean?

運動不足うんどうぶそく (うんどうぶそく) means "not getting enough exercise". It is one of the most common health complaints in Japanese small talk.

在宅勤務ざいたくきんむで運動不足うんどうぶそくだ。 — Working from home, I don't get enough exercise. (casual)

不足ふそく means "shortage"; you see it in 睡眠不足すいみんぶそく (lack of sleep) too.

What does 体からだを動うごかす mean?

体からだを動うごかす (からだをうごかす), "to move your body", is a soft, natural way to say "get some exercise".

週末しゅうまつは体からだを動うごかしたい。 — I want to get some exercise on the weekend. (casual)

What kinds of exercise are there?

What is 筋きんトレ?

筋きんトレ (きんトレ), short for 筋力きんりょくトレーニング, is strength training: lifting weights, push-ups, squats.

ジムで筋きんトレをしている。 — I do strength training at the gym. (casual)

For more hobby words, see Japanese hobbies vocabulary.

How do you talk about running and walking?

走はしる is "to run" and 歩あるく is "to walk". ジョギング and ウォーキング are loanwords for jogging and walking as exercise.

朝あさ、ジョギングをしています。 — I jog in the morning. (polite)

See run in Japanese and walk in Japanese.

What is ラジオ体操たいそう?

ラジオ体操たいそう (ラジオたいそう) is a set of short morning calisthenics broadcast on the radio, done in schools, workplaces and parks across Japan. 体操たいそう (たいそう) means "gymnastics" or "physical exercises".

子供こどものころ、夏休なつやすみにラジオ体操たいそうに行いった。 — As a kid, I went to radio exercises during summer vacation. (casual, a nostalgic memory)

Word Reading Meaning
運動うんどう うんどう exercise, sport
運動不足うんどうぶそく うんどうぶそく lack of exercise
筋きんトレ きんトレ strength training
体操たいそう たいそう calisthenics, gymnastics
ストレッチ ストレッチ stretching
ジム ジム gym
運動会うんどうかい うんどうかい school sports day

Beyond the basics

What is 運動会うんどうかい?

運動会うんどうかい (うんどうかい) is a school sports day, a big annual event with races, relays and team games. Families come to cheer.

明日あしたは子供こどもの運動会うんどうかいだ。 — Tomorrow is my kid's sports day. (casual)

What does 運動神経うんどうしんけい mean?

運動神経うんどうしんけい (うんどうしんけい), literally "motor nerves", means athletic ability. 運動神経うんどうしんけいがいい is "athletic", and 運動神経うんどうしんけいが悪わるい is "not athletic".

私わたしは運動神経うんどうしんけいがない。 — I have no athletic ability. (casual, self-deprecating)

For "good at" and "bad at", see 上手じょうず, 得意とくい, 下手へた and 苦手にがて.

How do you say "exercise" in a textbook?

An exercise in a textbook is 練習問題れんしゅうもんだい (れんしゅうもんだい), "practice question". 運動うんどう is only physical.

練習問題れんしゅうもんだいを解といてください。 — Please do the exercises. (polite, a teacher)

Common mistakes

  • Using 運動うんどう for textbook exercises. Use 練習問題れんしゅうもんだい.
  • Saying 運動うんどうをやる for every sport. For a specific sport, name it: サッカーをする.
  • Reading 筋きんトレ as すじトレ. It is きんトレ.
  • Thinking 運動うんどうが足たりない is wrong. It is fine, but 運動不足うんどうぶそく is the set phrase you will hear most.
  • Confusing 体操たいそう and 運動うんどう. 体操たいそう is a specific kind of calisthenics; 運動うんどう is exercise in general.
