Pay in Japanese: 払はらう (はらう), 支払しはらい, おごる, and "pay attention" too

"To pay" in Japanese is 払はらう (はらう): お金かねを払はらう, "to pay money". Politely, it is 払はらいます; in the past, 払はらいました. To ask "Can I pay by card?", say カードで払はらえますか? In formal and written Japanese, the word becomes 支払しはらう (しはらう) and the noun 支払しはらい (しはらい), "payment".

払はらう is one of the first verbs you need in Japan, and also one of the first verbs with a small conjugation trap: it is an う-verb ending in う, so its forms are 払はらって, 払はらった and 払はらわない, with a わ that surprises beginners. This post covers the verb and its forms, the words you will hear at a register, how to say "my treat", and the ways 払はらう reaches beyond money, including "pay attention", which works just like English.

How do you use 払はらう?

How do you conjugate 払はらう?

払はらう is a Group 1 (う-verb). The forms you need most are 払はらいます, 払はらって, 払はらった, 払はらわない and 払はらえる.

私わたしが払はらいます。 — I'll pay. (polite, offering at a restaurant) もう払はらいました。 — I've already paid. (polite, at a counter or to a friend) まだ払はらってない。 — I haven't paid yet. (casual, ている negative)

The negative 払はらわない uses わ, not あ. Every verb ending in 〜う does this: 買かう → 買かわない, 会あう → 会あわない. If verb groups are still fuzzy, our verb groups guide shows the pattern, and the te-form guide explains why 払はらう becomes 払はらって.

How do you say what you pay with?

Mark the method with で: カードで払はらう (pay by card), 現金げんきんで払はらう (pay in cash). To ask if it is possible, use the potential form 払はらえます.

カードで払はらえますか? — Can I pay by card? (polite, the most useful question at any register) 現金げんきんで払はらいます。 — I'll pay in cash. (polite, telling the cashier)

Many places in Japan now take cards and phone payments, but small shops and some restaurants are still cash only, so this question earns its place. For the amounts themselves, see いくらですか and prices, and for cash, change and ATMs, see money in Japanese.

How do you say what you are paying for?

Mark what you are paying for with を (or, for a bill, just say the noun). You pay the money, the fee, the rent or the bill.

家賃やちんを払はらいました。 — I paid the rent. (polite, a regular task) 電気代でんきだいを払はらうのを忘わすれた! — I forgot to pay the electricity bill! (casual, panic)

〜代だい (だい) is the suffix for a charge or fee: 電気代でんきだい (electricity bill), 食事代しょくじだい (meal cost). A close cousin is 〜費ひ (ひ), as in 交通費こうつうひ (こうつうひ, transport costs). These words are worth collecting, because you will see them on every receipt.

What will you hear when you pay?

What does お会計かいけい mean?

お会計かいけい (おかいけい) is "the bill" or "checkout" at a restaurant or shop. To ask for the check, say お会計かいけいお願ねがいします.

すみません、お会計かいけいお願ねがいします。 — Excuse me, the check, please. (polite, at a restaurant)

In many restaurants in Japan, you pay at the register by the door rather than at the table. If you are not sure, holding up the bill and saying お会計かいけい works.

What does 一括いっかつ mean at the register?

When you pay by credit card, the cashier may ask お支払しはらい回数かいすうは?, "how many payments?", and you answer 一括いっかつで, "in one payment". 一括いっかつ (いっかつ) means "in one go". The alternative is 分割ぶんかつ (ぶんかつ), "in installments".

お支払しはらい回数かいすうはどうなさいますか? — How many payments would you like? (service keigo, the cashier) 一括いっかつでお願ねがいします。 — In one payment, please. (polite, the usual answer)

This exchange confuses many visitors, because the question sounds complicated. 一括いっかつで is almost always the answer you want.

How do you say "Who's paying?"

Ask 誰だれが払はらう? casually, or offer with 私わたしが払はらいます. To split the bill evenly, use 割り勘わりかん (わりかん).

今日きょうは割り勘わりかんにしよう。 — Let's split the bill today. (casual, among friends)

割り勘わりかん is common among friends and coworkers in Japan, though who pays can depend on the group and the occasion. For how to calculate and say "per person", see 〜あたり and per person.

Beyond the basics

How do you say "my treat"?

Use おごる, "to treat someone to a meal or drink". おごるよ is "it's on me", and おごってもらった is "they treated me".

今日きょうは私わたしがおごるよ。 — Today it's my treat. (casual, friendly) 先輩せんぱいにおごってもらいました。 — My senior treated me. (polite, grateful)

The noun is おごり: 今日きょうは私わたしのおごり, "today is on me". When someone treats you, the natural reply is ごちそうさまでした, "thank you for the meal"; see いただきます and ごちそうさま.

What are 支払しはらう and 支払しはらい?

支払しはらう (しはらう) is the formal version of 払はらう, and 支払しはらい (しはらい) is "payment". You see them on invoices, websites, contracts and signs.

お支払しはらいはこちらです。 — Please pay here. (polite, a sign or staff member) 支払しはらい方法ほうほうを選えらんでください。 — Please choose a payment method. (polite, a website or form)

支払しはらい方法ほうほう (しはらいほうほう), "payment method", is a phrase you will meet on every Japanese booking site.

What does 払い戻はらいもどし mean?

払い戻はらいもどし (はらいもどし) means a refund: money "paid back". You will see it with train tickets, event tickets and canceled bookings. 返金へんきん (へんきん) is a common synonym.

チケットの払い戻はらいもどしはできますか? — Can I get a refund on the ticket? (polite, at a counter)

For returning items in a shop, see how to return or exchange something.

Can 払はらう mean things other than paying money?

Yes. 払はらう also means to sweep or brush away, and in phrases like 注意ちゅういを払はらう, "to pay attention", it works just like English.

注意ちゅういを払はらってください。 — Please pay attention. (formal, a warning) 雪ゆきを払はらってから入はいってください。 — Please brush off the snow before coming in. (polite, at a door in winter)

注意ちゅういを払はらう sounds formal, used in announcements and writing. In everyday speech, 気きをつけて ("be careful") is more natural. A helpful image for 払はらう is brushing something away from you, which connects both meanings: you hand money away, and you sweep dust away.

Quick reference

Phrase Reading Meaning Where
払はらう はらう to pay everywhere
カードで払はらえますか かーどではらえますか can I pay by card? registers
お会計かいけい おかいけい the bill, checkout restaurants, shops
一括いっかつで いっかつで in one payment credit card registers
分割ぶんかつ ぶんかつ installments larger purchases
割り勘わりかん わりかん splitting the bill friends, coworkers
おごる おごる to treat friends, seniors
支払しはらい しはらい payment signs, websites
払い戻はらいもどし はらいもどし refund tickets, bookings

Common mistakes

  • Saying 払ふつあない. The negative is 払はらわない, with わ.
  • Saying カードを払はらいます. With を, the card becomes the thing you are paying for. For "pay by card", use で: カードで払はらいます.
  • Saying 分割ぶんかつ when the cashier asks about payments. Unless you want installments, answer 一括いっかつで.
  • Using 支払しはらう in casual speech. It sounds like a contract. Use 払はらう with friends.
  • Saying ありがとう instead of ごちそうさま when treated. ありがとう is fine, but ごちそうさまでした is the expected thank-you for a meal.

Practice

Try each answer before opening it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: one particle decides what the sentence means.

1. Offer politely: "I'll pay."

Show answer

私わたしが払はらいます。 — が marks who will pay, and 払はらいます is the polite form.

2. Say "I haven't paid yet" casually.

Show answer

まだ払はらってない。 — まだ plus the negative ている form shows something not done yet.

3. At the register, ask "Can I pay by card?"

Show answer

4. Fix the particle: カードを払はらえますか?

Show answer

カードで払はらえますか? — を marks the thing you pay for, so it sounds like you are paying for the card. This is the pair to question 3: で for the method.

5. Ask for the check at a restaurant.

Show answer

すみません、お会計かいけいお願ねがいします。 — お会計かいけい is the bill or checkout.

6. The cashier asks お支払しはらい回数かいすうは? You want to pay all at once. Answer.

Show answer

一括いっかつでお願ねがいします。 — 一括いっかつ means in one payment.

Show answer

チケットの払い戻はらいもどしはできますか? — 払い戻はらいもどし is a refund, money paid back.

9. What is the negative plain form of 払はらう?

Show answer

払はらわない — verbs ending in う change to わ before ない.

10. A sign says 注意ちゅういを払はらってください. What does it ask?

Show answer

Please pay attention. — 注意ちゅういを払はらう works just like the English phrase.

In a trial lesson, ask カードで払はらえますか at a shop counter and offer to treat a friend with おごる.

Paying, splitting the bill and asking about cards come up constantly when learners prepare for a trip, and 払はらう is also where many first meet the わ in 払はらわない.
