Music in Japanese: 音楽おんがく (おんがく), 曲きょく, 歌うた, and how to talk about the songs you love

"Music" in Japanese is 音楽おんがく (おんがく, ongaku). A piece of music is a 曲きょく (きょく), and a 歌うた (うた) is a song with words or singing. "To sing" is 歌うたう (うたう), and "to listen to music" is 音楽おんがくを聴きく (おんがくをきく). Pop and rock shows are often called ライブ.

How do you say "music" in Japanese?

What is 音楽おんがく?

音楽おんがく (おんがく) is "music".

音楽おんがくを聴きくのが好すきです。 — I like listening to music. (polite, a common self-introduction line) どんな音楽おんがくが好すきですか。 — What kind of music do you like? (polite, a great conversation starter)

Our post on hobbies vocabulary has more ways to talk about what you enjoy.

What is the difference between 曲きょく and 歌うた?

曲きょく (きょく) is a piece of music or a track in general. 歌うた (うた) usually means a song with words, or the singing itself. They overlap in conversation.

この曲きょく、いいね。 — This track is great. (casual) 彼女かのじょは歌うたが上手じょうずだ。 — She sings well. (neutral)

An instrumental piece is a 曲きょく, and people do not normally call it a 歌うた. A pop song can be called either, depending on whether you are thinking of the music (曲きょく) or the singing and words (歌うた). Our post on good at and bad at covers 上手じょうず.

聴きく or 聞きく for music?

Both are read きく. 聴きく stresses listening attentively and is common for music; 聞きく is also used for music, and is the everyday character for hearing and asking.

毎朝まいあさ、電車でんしゃで音楽おんがくを聴きく。 — I listen to music on the train every morning. (neutral)

Our post on listen in Japanese explains the difference.

Words that overlap, and how to choose

The music words below are not two-way splits. Pick the one that fits the situation, and expect natives to mix them.

Pair What is usually true What to watch for
曲きょく / 歌うた 曲きょく = the piece or track; 歌うた = a song with words, or singing A pop song can be either one
聴きく / 聞きく 聴きく = listening on purpose; 聞きく = hearing, asking, or music too 聞きく for music is not wrong
ライブ / コンサート ライブ is common for pop and rock; コンサート is used widely 演奏会えんそうかい leans toward classical
洋楽ようがく / 邦楽ほうがく 洋楽ようがく = music from outside Japan, set against Japanese music; 邦楽ほうがく = Japanese music 邦楽ほうがく can also mean traditional music like koto and shamisen

Beyond the basics

How do you talk about a song you love?

A few words describe a song: 歌詞かし (かし, lyrics), サビ (the catchy high point, often the chorus), メロディー (melody), and 耳みみに残のこる (to stay in your ears).

この曲きょくはサビがいい。 — This song has a great chorus. (casual) 歌詞かしが心こころに響ひびく。 — The lyrics really touch my heart. (neutral, a little emotional) このメロディー、耳みみに残のこるね。 — This melody is so catchy. (casual)

サビ is the climax of a song. It is often the chorus, but not always, so it does not match "chorus" one to one. Fans also talk about their 推おし曲きょく (おしきょく), their favorite song by an artist.

What is a ライブ?

ライブ is a live concert, especially pop, rock or idol music. コンサート is also common, and 演奏会えんそうかい (えんそうかい) is used more for classical music.

週末しゅうまつ、好すきなバンドのライブに行いく。 — I'm going to my favorite band's concert this weekend. (casual)

A ライブハウス is a small music club, not a house.

What are 洋楽ようがく and 邦楽ほうがく?

洋楽ようがく (ようがく) is usually music from outside Japan, in contrast to Japanese music. 邦楽ほうがく (ほうがく) is Japanese music, and can also mean traditional Japanese music, depending on context.

子こどもの頃ころは洋楽ようがくばかり聴きいていた。 — I mostly listened to foreign music as a kid. (casual)

Anime songs are アニソン. Our post on anison looks at how anime songs travel.

What are 楽器がっき and 演奏えんそう?

楽器がっき (がっき) is a musical instrument, and 演奏えんそう (えんそう) is a performance.

何なにか楽器がっきを弾ひけますか。 — Can you play any instruments? (polite; this asks about instruments you 弾ひく)

Japanese uses different verbs for different instruments: 弾ひく for piano and guitar, 吹ふく for wind instruments, 叩たたく for drums. Our post on playing instruments explains them.

What is 音痴おんち?

音痴おんち (おんち) is poor sense of pitch, often used for someone who can't sing in tune. It is not a perfect match for "tone-deaf", and it can sound blunt about someone else.

私わたし、音痴おんちだからカラオケは苦手にがて。 — I'm bad at carrying a tune, so I'm not great at karaoke. (casual, often said about yourself)

方向音痴ほうこうおんち (ほうこうおんち) means someone with a poor sense of direction.

What is カラオケ?

カラオケ is karaoke, a popular night out in Japan.

今夜こんや、カラオケに行いかない? — Want to go to karaoke tonight? (casual, an invitation)

In Japan, karaoke is often in private rooms with friends. 十八番おはこ (おはこ) is your go-to song or specialty, as in カラオケの十八番おはこ.

How do you say "I'm in a band"?

バンドを組くんでいる (バンドをくんでいる) means "I'm in a band" or "we have a band together". 組くむ means "to put together, to team up".

大学だいがくでバンドを組くんでいた。 — I was in a band in college. (casual)

Band members are メンバー, and the lead singer is ボーカル.

What is 鼻歌はなうた?

鼻歌はなうた (はなうた) is humming to yourself.

機嫌きげんがいいと、鼻歌はなうたを歌うたう。 — When I'm in a good mood, I hum. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Calling an instrumental piece a 歌うた. It is normally a 曲きょく.
  • Reading ライブハウス as a house. It is a small music venue.
  • Saying 歌うたがいい to mean someone sings well. 歌うたが上手じょうず is the natural phrase. 歌うたがいい praises the song.
  • Treating 洋楽ようがく as "Western classical". In everyday talk it contrasts with Japanese music.

Practice

Try each answer yourself before opening it. These questions use new situations, not the examples above.

1. Ask politely what kind of music someone listens to on weekends.

Show answer

週末しゅうまつはどんな音楽おんがくを聴ききますか。 — 音楽おんがく plus 聴きく. どんな asks for the kind.

2. A friend plays a track with no vocals. Casually say "This piece is nice."

Show answer

この曲きょく、いいね。 — 曲きょく works for any piece or track. With no vocals, 歌うた would be an odd fit.

3. Praise a classmate's singing in the casual form: "You sing well."

Show answer

歌うた、上手じょうずだね。 — 歌うたが上手じょうず is about singing well. 歌うたがいい would rather praise the song itself.

4. Say "I listen to jazz while cooking" (neutral).

Show answer

料理りょうりをしながらジャズを聴きく。 — 聴きく suits music you listen to on purpose. 聞きく would also be understood, so this is a preference, not a rule.

5. Say you mostly listened to music from overseas as a kid.

Show answer

子こどもの頃ころは洋楽ようがくばかり聴きいていた。 — 洋楽ようがく is usually music from outside Japan, set against music made in Japan. ばかり means "mostly, almost nothing but".

6. Invite a friend to see a pop singer's show next month.

Show answer

来月らいげつ、好すきな歌手かしゅのライブに行いかない? — ライブ is the usual word for pop and rock shows, and 〜ない? makes it a gentle invitation.

7. Ask politely whether someone can play any instrument, including wind or drums.

Show answer

何なにか楽器がっきができますか。 — できる covers any instrument, while 弾ひける only covers instruments you 弾ひく.

8. Say you are not good at singing, so you tend to avoid karaoke (casual).

Show answer

歌うたが下手へただからカラオケは苦手にがて。 — 音痴おんち is also possible, but 下手へた just says your singing is weak without implying tone problems.

9. Say "My sister is in a band and plays the drums."

Show answer

妹いもうとはバンドを組くんでいて、ドラムを叩たたく。 — 組くむ means to form or be in a band; 〜ている shows it is her ongoing situation. Drums use 叩たたく.

10. Say "I hum when I clean the room" (casual).

Show answer

部屋へやを掃除そうじしながら鼻歌はなうたを歌うたう。 — 鼻歌はなうたを歌うたう is the set phrase for humming.

FAQ

Can I use 聞きく instead of 聴きく for music? Yes. 聞きく is also used for music, and many people write it that way. 聴きく adds the sense of listening carefully.

Is コンサート wrong for a rock show? No. ライブ is common for pop and rock, but コンサート is also used, so both can be natural.

Is 邦楽ほうがく always traditional music? No. It depends on context: it can mean Japanese music in general, or traditional music like koto and shamisen.

How do I say "singer"? 歌手かしゅ (かしゅ). A singer-songwriter is シンガーソングライター.

What does 名曲めいきょく mean? 名曲めいきょく (めいきょく) is a famous, excellent piece of music.
