God in Japanese: 神かみ (かみ), 神様かみさま, and why fans call a great episode 神かみ回かい

"God" in Japanese is 神かみ (かみ, kami). In conversation people usually add 様さま and say 神様かみさま (かみさま). The same word covers the one God of Christianity and the countless gods of Shinto, and in modern slang 神かみ also means "godlike, amazing", as in 神かみ回かい, a god-tier episode.

Learners often expect two separate words, one for "God" and one for "gods", and are surprised that Japanese uses one for both. That makes sense once you see where the word comes from: in Shinto, kami are everywhere, in mountains, rivers, old trees and even famous people from history. So 神かみ is a wide word. This post covers how to use it, the words built on it, how anime and fans use it, and a pronunciation trap that makes 神かみ sound exactly like "paper" and "hair".

How do you say "god" in Japanese?

What is the basic word?

神かみ (かみ) is "god" or "deity". 神様かみさま (かみさま) is the respectful form you hear in everyday speech and prayers.

神様かみさま、お願ねがいします! — Please, God! (polite, a quick prayer before a test or a game) 日本にほんには神様かみさまがたくさんいる。 — Japan has many gods. (casual, explaining Shinto)

In daily life, 神様かみさま is the natural word. Plain 神かみ appears in writing, in compounds, and in dramatic lines. It is the same word whether you mean one God or many gods; Japanese simply does not mark the plural, as our post on plurals explains.

Does 神かみ also mean the God of Christianity?

Yes. Japanese Christians also say 神かみ, often 神様かみさま, and the Bible in Japanese uses 神かみ. Context tells listeners which god is meant.

キリスト教きょうの神かみを信しんじています。 — I believe in the God of Christianity. (polite, talking about faith)

If you want to make it clear, add the religion before it, as in the example. Our post on believe in Japanese covers 信しんじる for faith.

What are 八百万やおよろずの神かみ?

八百万やおよろずの神かみ (やおよろずのかみ), "eight million gods", is the traditional Shinto phrase for the countless gods of Japan. The number is not a real count; it means "too many to count".

日本にほんでは、八百万やおよろずの神かみがいると言いわれている。 — In Japan, it is said there are eight million gods. (neutral, explaining culture)

This idea explains a lot of everyday Japanese: thanking the god of a mountain before a hike, a small shrine on a rooftop, or the feeling that things like old tools deserve respect. 神かみ is a word for something sacred that lives in the world, not only far above it.

Beyond the basics

Which words are built on 神かみ?

Many, and the reading often changes to しん or じん in compounds.

Word Reading Meaning
神社じんじゃ じんじゃ Shinto shrine
神道しんとう しんとう Shinto
神話しんわ しんわ mythology
女神めがみ めがみ goddess
死神しにがみ しにがみ god of death, grim reaper
神主かんぬし かんぬし Shinto priest

週末しゅうまつに神社じんじゃへお参まいりに行いった。 — I went to pray at a shrine on the weekend. (casual) ギリシャ神話しんわが好すきです。 — I like Greek mythology. (polite)

神主かんぬし shows yet another reading, かん. Do not try to memorize every reading at once; learn each word as a whole, as we explain in hiragana, katakana and kanji.

What does 神かみ mean as slang?

In modern casual Japanese, 神かみ in front of a noun means "amazing" or "god-tier".

今週こんしゅうのアニメ、神かみ回かいだった! — This week's episode was god-tier! (casual, fan talk) あの店員てんいんさん、神かみ対応たいおうだね。 — That clerk's service was amazing. (casual, praising great service) このゲーム、神かみゲーだよ。 — This game is a masterpiece. (very casual, gamer slang)

神かみ回かい (かみかい) is an outstanding episode, 神かみ対応たいおう (かみたいおう) is wonderful customer service, and 神かみゲー is a brilliant game. The opposite of 神かみ対応たいおう is 塩しお対応たいおう (しおたいおう), "salty", cold treatment. These come up constantly in reviews and social media; our otaku slang post has more.

How do gods appear in anime?

As characters, as titles, and in one famous counter.

新世界しんせかいの神かみとなる。 — I will become the god of a new world. (dramatic, the famous ambition of デスノート's main character)

死神しにがみ (しにがみ), the god of death, is central to both デスノート and BLEACH. And in 鬼おに滅ほろの刃は, the elite demon slayers are called 柱はしら (はしら), "pillars". In the series the word simply means a pillar of the corps. It is also the traditional counter for gods in Japanese, so 一いち柱はしら (ひとはしら) means "one god", and some fans enjoy that echo. Gods are not the only heavenly figures in anime: an angel is 天使てんし, literally "messenger of heaven", and angel in Japanese adds the fantasy favorite 堕天使だてんし, a fallen angel cast out of heaven.

Why do 神かみ, 紙かみ and 髪かみ sound the same?

All three are read かみ: 神かみ (god), 紙かみ (paper) and 髪かみ (hair). Even 上うえ (top, above) can be かみ in some words. Japanese has a lot of these homophones, and context almost always sorts them out.

紙かみに神かみの絵えを描えがいた。 — I drew a picture of a god on paper. (neutral, two かみ in one sentence) 髪かみを切きりました。 — I got a haircut. (polite)

There are small pitch differences in standard Japanese, but listeners mostly rely on the rest of the sentence. Our post on Japanese homophones has many more pairs.

What does お客様きゃくさまは神様かみさまです mean?

"The customer is god." It is a famous line in Japan, originally said by a singer about performing for an audience as if before the gods. Today people often use it to mean the customer is always right, and also to criticize customers who act like they are.

お客様きゃくさまは神様かみさまです、なんて言いうけど…。 — They say the customer is god, but... (casual, the skeptical way people quote it today)

Common mistakes

  • Looking for a separate word for "gods". 神かみ or 神様かみさま covers both singular and plural.
  • Reading 神かみ as かみ in every word. It is じん in 神社じんじゃ, しん in 神話しんわ, がみ in 女神めがみ (めがみ), and かん in 神主かんぬし.
  • Using 神かみ slang in formal writing. 神かみ回かい and 神かみ対応たいおう are casual.
  • Mixing up 神かみ and 紙かみ in writing. They sound the same, but the kanji matter.
  • Saying 神かみ alone in a polite prayer. 神様かみさま is the natural, respectful form.

FAQ
