Friendship in Japanese: 友情ゆうじょう (ゆうじょう), 絆きずな, and 喧嘩けんかするほど仲なかがいい

"Friendship" in Japanese is 友情ゆうじょう (ゆうじょう): 友情ゆうじょうを大切たいせつにする means "to value friendship". For the deep, unbreakable kind, Japanese often uses 絆きずな (きずな), "bond". And when two friends argue all the time but stay close, people say 喧嘩けんかするほど仲なかがいい, "the more they fight, the closer they are".

If you watch shonen anime, you have heard 友情ゆうじょう shouted at climactic moments, usually right before someone gets back up. The word itself is simple, but it lives in a cluster of expressions about how friendships grow, break and get repaired. Japanese has particularly good idioms for the messy middle: the friends who bicker, the rivals who cannot stand each other, the bond you cannot escape. This post covers the word and that whole cluster.

What does 友情ゆうじょう mean?

How do you use 友情ゆうじょう?

友情ゆうじょう (ゆうじょう) is friendship as a feeling or a value: loyalty and affection between friends. It is a noun, often with を大切たいせつにする (to value), が深ふかまる (to deepen) or が生うまれる (to be born).

二人ふたりの友情ゆうじょうは高校時代こうこうじだいから続つづいている。 — Their friendship has lasted since high school. (neutral, describing two people) 友情ゆうじょうを大切たいせつにしたい。 — I want to value my friendships. (casual, a personal belief)

友とも means "friend" and 情じょう means "feeling", so 友情ゆうじょう is literally "friend-feeling". For the everyday words for friends themselves, see friend in Japanese.

Why is 友情ゆうじょう so big in anime?

Because 友情ゆうじょう・努力どりょく・勝利しょうり (ゆうじょう・どりょく・しょうり), "friendship, effort, victory", is widely known as the guiding motto of a major shonen manga magazine. Countless battle stories follow that order: the heroes bond, train hard, and win together.

友情ゆうじょう・努力どりょく・勝利しょうりが少年漫画しょうねんまんがの王道おうどうだ。 — Friendship, effort and victory are the classic formula of shonen manga. (neutral, talking about genres)

王道おうどう (おうどう), "the royal road", means the classic, orthodox path in a genre. Calling a story 王道おうどう is praise, while ありきたり is the complaint that it is unoriginal, and cliché in Japanese adds お約束やくそく for the beats fans wait for, such as the hero arriving just in time.

What does 絆きずな mean?

絆きずな (きずな) is a bond: a deep connection between people that holds through hard times. It is used for friends, family, teams and communities.

この経験けいけんで、チームの絆きずなが強つよくなった。 — This experience made our team's bond stronger. (neutral, after a challenge) 家族かぞくの絆きずなを感かんじた。 — I felt the bond of family. (neutral, emotional)

絆きずな is a favorite word in anime titles and songs, and it carries more weight than 友情ゆうじょう. 友情ゆうじょう is the friendship; 絆きずな is what ties people together.

How do you talk about friendships changing?

How do you say "make up" after a fight?

仲直なかなおり (なかなおり) means making up after a fight, and 仲直なかなおりする is the verb.

昨日きのうけんかしたけど、もう仲直なかなおりした。 — We fought yesterday, but we've already made up. (casual) 早はやく仲直なかなおりしたほうがいいよ。 — You should make up soon. (casual, advice)

仲なか means "relationship" and 直なおり means "getting fixed", so it is literally "the relationship gets repaired". The fight itself is 喧嘩けんか (けんか). When the fight is only words, it is 口喧嘩くちげんか (くちげんか), and fight in Japanese explains why heroes 戦たたかう while friends and siblings 喧嘩けんかする.

What does 喧嘩けんかするほど仲なかがいい mean?

喧嘩けんかするほど仲なかがいい (けんかするほどなかがいい) means "the more you fight, the closer you are": people who argue a lot are often the closest friends. It is a common saying used about bickering friends, siblings and couples.

あの二人ふたりはいつも言いい合あってるけど、喧嘩けんかするほど仲なかがいいってやつだね。 — Those two always argue, but it's a case of "the more they fight, the closer they are". (casual, amused)

The grammar is 〜ほど, "to the extent that"; see 〜ば〜ほど for the related "the more... the more" pattern.

What does 犬猿けんえんの仲なか mean?

犬猿けんえんの仲なか (けんえんのなか), "the relationship of dogs and monkeys", means two people who get along terribly. It is the opposite of 仲なかがいい.

あの二人ふたりは犬猿けんえんの仲なかだ。 — Those two can't stand each other. (neutral)

In anime, 犬猿けんえんの仲なか is often the rival pair who constantly clash and, eventually, end up as 絆きずな partners. For more idioms like this, see Japanese idioms.

What is 腐れ縁くされえん?

腐れ縁くされえん (くされえん), literally "a rotten connection", is a relationship you cannot get out of, often said jokingly about a long-time friend.

あいつとは腐れ縁くされえんで、もう二十年にじゅうねんの付き合つきあいだ。 — We're stuck with each other; we've known each other for twenty years. (casual, affectionate teasing)

It sounds negative, but between friends it is usually warm: "we're stuck with each other, and that's fine".

Beyond the basics

How do you say "a friendship starts"?

友情ゆうじょうが芽生めばえる (ゆうじょうがめばえる), "friendship sprouts", is a lovely phrase for a friendship beginning. 芽生めばえる means "to bud, to sprout".

同おなじ部活ぶかつで、二人ふたりの間あいだに友情ゆうじょうが芽生めばえた。 — In the same club, a friendship began to grow between them. (neutral, storytelling)

What does 友情出演ゆうじょうしゅつえん mean?

友情出演ゆうじょうしゅつえん (ゆうじょうしゅつえん) is a "friendship appearance": a cameo by a famous person who appears as a favor to the creators. You will see it in film and drama credits.

How do you describe a friendship ending?

People say 疎遠そえんになる (そえんになる), "to drift apart", or 縁えんを切きる (えんをきる), "to cut ties". The first is gentle and natural; the second is a deliberate break.

卒業そつぎょうしてから、だんだん疎遠そえんになった。 — After graduation, we gradually drifted apart. (neutral, a little sad)

Common mistakes

  • Using 友情ゆうじょう for "friend". 友情ゆうじょう is the friendship itself. A friend is 友達ともだち.
  • Using 絆きずな for a casual acquaintance. 絆きずな is a deep bond, built over time.
  • Taking 腐れ縁くされえん as an insult. Between friends, it is usually affectionate.
  • Reading 犬猿けんえん as いぬさる. It is けんえん.
  • Saying 友情ゆうじょうがいい for "we're good friends". Use 仲なかがいい: 私わたしたちは仲なかがいい.
