Fight in Japanese: 戦たたかう (たたかう), 喧嘩けんか (けんか), and the anime cry 戦たたかえ!

"Fight" in Japanese is 戦たたかう (たたかう) when it means battling an enemy or a challenge, and 喧嘩けんか (けんか) when it means an argument or a brawl, usually between people who know each other. The anime battle cry 戦たたかえ!(たたかえ) means "Fight!"

English "fight" covers a war, a boxing match, a couple arguing over dishes and a patient fighting an illness. Japanese splits these by who is involved and how serious it is. Soldiers and heroes 戦たたかう. Friends, siblings and couples 喧嘩けんかする. Countries and companies 争あらそう. And when a Japanese friend cheers you on with ファイト!, they are not asking you to fight at all. This post sorts them out.

How do you say "fight" in Japanese?

What does 戦たたかう mean?

戦たたかう (たたかう) means to fight or battle: against an enemy, a rival team, or a hard situation. The person or thing you fight takes と.

主人公しゅじんこうは魔王まおうと戦たたかった。 — The hero fought the demon king. (neutral, a story) 最後さいごまで戦たたかいます。 — I'll fight to the end. (polite, determined)

The command form 戦たたかえ (たたかえ), "Fight!", is a staple of battle anime, and the volitional 戦せんおう is "Let's fight!". For other strong commands in Japanese, see let's go in Japanese.

What is the difference between 戦たたかう and 闘たたかう?

Both are read たたかう. 戦たたかう is the general word, especially for battles and wars. 闘たたかう is often used for struggles against something, like illness, or one-on-one combat sports.

病気びょうきと闘たたかっている。 — They are fighting an illness. (neutral, a serious struggle) チャンピオンと闘たたかう。 — To fight the champion. (neutral, a boxing or wrestling match)

In everyday writing, 戦たたかう is far more common, and using it for either case is not wrong.

What does 喧嘩けんか mean?

喧嘩けんか (けんか) is a fight, usually between people who know each other: an argument, a quarrel, or a physical brawl. 喧嘩けんかする is the verb, and the partner takes と.

昨日きのう、姉あねと喧嘩けんかした。 — I had a fight with my older sister yesterday. (casual, a family argument) 喧嘩けんかはやめて! — Stop fighting! (casual, breaking it up)

Most people write けんか in hiragana in casual messages, because the kanji 喧嘩けんか are complex.

Is 喧嘩けんか physical or verbal?

Both. Context tells you which. For clearly verbal arguments, people say 口喧嘩くちげんか (くちげんか), "a mouth fight".

ただの口喧嘩くちげんかだよ。 — It's just an argument. (casual, reassuring) 駅えきで喧嘩けんかがあったらしい。 — Apparently there was a fight at the station. (casual, could be physical)

Word Reading Kind of fight Example
戦たたかう たたかう battle, competition 敵てきと戦たたかう
闘たたかう たたかう struggle, combat sport 病気びょうきと闘たたかう
喧嘩けんか けんか argument, brawl 友達ともだちと喧嘩けんかする
口喧嘩くちげんか くちげんか verbal argument 口喧嘩くちげんかした
争あらそう あらそう dispute, compete 優勝ゆうしょうを争あらそう
戦争せんそう せんそう war 戦争せんそうが終おわった

What other fight words should you know?

What does 争あらそう mean?

争あらそう (あらそう) means to compete or dispute over something: a prize, a ranking, a court case. It is a little formal and often appears in news and sports.

二ふたつのチームが優勝ゆうしょうを争あらそっている。 — Two teams are competing for the championship. (neutral, sports news)

The noun 争あらそい (あらそい) means "conflict" or "dispute", and 言いい争あらそい (いいあらそい) is a heated argument.

What is 戦争せんそう?

戦争せんそう (せんそう) is war, between countries or large groups. It shares the 戦せん kanji with 戦たたかう.

戦争せんそうが終おわってから、町まちは変かわった。 — The town changed after the war ended. (neutral, history)

What do Japanese people mean by ファイト?

ファイト! is a cheer meaning "You can do it!" or "Go for it!", not "fight". It is common in sports and among students before exams.

明日あしたの試験しけん、ファイト! — Good luck on tomorrow's exam! (casual, encouraging)

Its close friend is 頑張がんばって; see ganbatte meaning. The two often appear together as ファイト!頑張がんばって!

Beyond the basics

How do you say "pick a fight"?

喧嘩けんかを売うる (けんかをうる), literally "sell a fight", means to pick a fight. 喧嘩けんかを買かう (けんかをかう), "buy a fight", means to accept the challenge.

俺おれに喧嘩けんかを売うってるのか? — Are you picking a fight with me? (rough, anime delinquent speech) その喧嘩けんか、買かった! — Challenge accepted! (rough, dramatic)

This buying and selling image is one of the most fun idioms for learners, and it shows up often in delinquent and school-gang anime.

What does 喧嘩けんかするほど仲なかがいい mean?

It means "the more people fight, the closer they are". It is said about friends or couples who bicker but are very close. For more friendship idioms, see friendship in Japanese, which covers close friends and 仲なかがいい.

How do you say "make up" after a fight?

仲直なかなおり (なかなおり) means making up. 仲直なかなおりする is "to make up".

喧嘩けんかしたけど、すぐ仲直なかなおりした。 — We fought, but we made up quickly. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Using 戦たたかう for a fight with your sibling. That is 喧嘩けんか.
  • Using 喧嘩けんか for a battle against monsters. That is 戦たたかう.
  • Taking ファイト literally. It means "You can do it!", a cheer.
  • Saying 姉あねを喧嘩けんかした. The partner takes と: 姉あねと喧嘩けんかした.
  • Using 争あらそう for a small argument. 争あらそう sounds like a serious dispute or competition.
