Cliché in Japanese: ありきたり, ベタ, お約束やくそく, 王道おうどう, and 定番ていばん

"Cliché" in Japanese is usually ありきたり (unoriginal, common) or ベタ (corny, predictable). A predictable plot twist is a ベタな展開てんかい (ベタなてんかい). When a cliché is expected and loved, like the hero arriving just in time, it is お約束やくそく (おやくそく), "the promised thing". A classic, done-right formula is 王道おうどう (おうどう).

Japanese has a surprisingly fine-grained vocabulary for clichés, partly thanks to anime and comedy. Some words are criticisms, some are affectionate, and some are compliments. Picking the right one lets you say exactly how you feel about a story: tired of it, amused by it, or happy it followed the formula. This post covers them from negative to positive.

How do you say "cliché" in Japanese?

What does ありきたり mean?

ありきたり means ordinary, common, unoriginal: something you have seen many times. It is mildly negative.

ありきたりな話はなしだった。 — It was a pretty unoriginal story. (casual) ありきたりな言葉ことばしか出でてこない。 — Only clichéd words come to mind. (casual, e.g. writing a card)

What does ベタ mean?

ベタ means corny, obvious, cheesy. ベタな展開てんかい is a predictable development. It can be critical or affectionate depending on tone.

ベタな展開てんかいだけど、泣ないちゃった。 — It was a predictable twist, but I cried anyway. (casual) ベタなギャグ。 — A corny joke. (noun phrase)

ベタ comes from comedy slang, where a ベタ joke is the most obvious one.

What does 使つかい古ふるされた mean?

使つかい古ふるされた (つかいふるされた), "worn out from use", describes expressions that have lost their impact.

使つかい古ふるされた表現ひょうげんは避さけたほうがいい。 — It's better to avoid worn-out expressions. (casual, writing advice)

When are clichés a good thing?

What does お約束やくそく mean?

お約束やくそく (おやくそく), "the promise", is an expected trope that the audience waits for and enjoys. The hero transforming, the villain's monologue, the comedian falling over.

ここで主人公しゅじんこうが来くるのはお約束やくそくだね。 — The hero showing up right now is the classic move. (casual)

For more anime-style phrases, see やれやれ and other anime phrases.

What does 王道おうどう mean?

王道おうどう (おうどう), "the king's road", is the classic, orthodox approach done well. 王道おうどう is a compliment.

王道おうどうの少年漫画しょうねんまんがが好すき。 — I like classic shonen manga. (casual)

What does 定番ていばん mean?

定番ていばん (ていばん) is a standard or staple: the go-to choice everyone knows.

お土産みやげの定番ていばんはお菓子かしだ。 — The standard souvenir is sweets. (casual)

Word Reading Meaning Tone
ありきたり ありきたり unoriginal negative
使つかい古ふるされた つかいふるされた worn out negative
マンネリ マンネリ in a rut negative
ベタ ベタ corny, predictable mixed
テンプレ テンプレ formulaic mixed
お約束やくそく おやくそく expected trope affectionate
定番ていばん ていばん staple positive
王道おうどう おうどう classic route positive

Beyond the basics

What does マンネリ mean?

マンネリ, from "mannerism", means stuck in a rut: the same pattern repeated until it gets boring. マンネリ化か (マンネリか) is "becoming stale".

このシリーズ、最近さいきんマンネリ化かしてる。 — This series has been getting stale lately. (casual)

When you personally are tired of the same pattern, the verb is 飽あきた, and bored in Japanese ties it to repetition, unlike 退屈たいくつ, which comes from having nothing to do.

What does テンプレ mean?

テンプレ, from "template", is a formulaic, by-the-book pattern. テンプレ展開てんかい is a plot that follows a template.

異世界いせかいものはテンプレが多おおい。 — Isekai stories have a lot of formulaic plots. (casual)

For good shows to practice these words on, see best anime to learn Japanese.

How do you praise a cliché?

Say ベタだけどいい ("corny but good") or 王道おうどうだからこそいい ("good precisely because it's classic").

王道おうどうだからこそいい。 — It's good precisely because it's classic. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Using 王道おうどう as a criticism. It is praise for a classic done right.
  • Calling a beloved trope ありきたり. If fans enjoy it, お約束やくそく fits better.
  • Reading 定番ていばん as じょうばん. It is ていばん.
  • Thinking ベタ is always rude. With a smile, it is affectionate.
  • Saying マンネリ for one boring episode. マンネリ is a repeated pattern over time.
