Fate in Japanese: 運命うんめい (うんめい), 宿命しゅくめい, 縁えん, and the red string of fate

Fate in Japanese is 運命うんめい (うんめい): 運命うんめいの人ひと is "the one you were destined to meet", and 運命うんめいに逆さからう is "to defy fate". A heavier, darker word is 宿命しゅくめい (しゅくめい), a fate you cannot escape. For the gentle sense that people were meant to meet, Japanese uses 縁えん (えん).

Fate is everywhere in anime: heroes who fight their destiny, lovers tied by an invisible red thread, villains who claim it was all written in the stars. Japanese has several words for it, and they differ in weight. 運命うんめい can be romantic or dramatic, 宿命しゅくめい is grim and unavoidable, and 縁えん is warm and everyday. This post covers each, with the phrases you hear in stories and in real conversation.

What does 運命うんめい mean?

How do you use 運命うんめい?

運命うんめい (うんめい) is fate or destiny: the course of events that seems decided beyond your control. 運うん means "luck, fortune" and 命いのち means "life", so you can picture it as "the fortune of a life".

これは運命うんめいだと思おもう。 — I think this is fate. (casual, a little dramatic) 二人ふたりの出会であいは運命うんめいだった。 — Their meeting was fate. (neutral, storytelling)

運命うんめい is heavier than plain luck. For the lighter word 運うん, see lucky in Japanese.

What is 運命うんめいの人ひと?

運命うんめいの人ひと (うんめいのひと) is "the one": the person you feel you were destined to meet, usually a romantic partner.

やっと運命うんめいの人ひとに出会であえた。 — I've finally met the one. (casual, happy)

It is the Japanese answer to "soulmate".

How do you say "defy fate"?

運命うんめいに逆さからう (うんめいにさからう) means "to go against fate". 運命うんめいを変かえる means "to change fate".

運命うんめいに逆さからってでも、君きみを守まもる。 — Even if I have to defy fate, I'll protect you. (rough, a hero's vow) 自分じぶんの運命うんめいは自分じぶんで決きめる。 — I decide my own fate. (neutral, a determined line)

The second sentence is a classic theme line, the kind a character says when refusing to be controlled by others. 他人たにんに操あやつられない, "I won't be controlled by others", often goes with it.

What other "fate" words are there?

What is 宿命しゅくめい?

宿命しゅくめい (しゅくめい) is a destiny you were born with and cannot escape, often tragic. 宿やど suggests something lodged in you from the start.

それが彼かれの宿命しゅくめいだった。 — That was his destiny. (neutral, grave) 宿命しゅくめいのライバル — a fated rival (a dramatic anime phrase)

宿命しゅくめいのライバル, "fated rival", is a favorite phrase for two characters whose conflict feels inevitable.

What is 縁えん?

縁えん (えん) is a connection or bond that feels meant to be, especially between people. It is gentle and common in daily life.

これも何なにかの縁えんですね。 — This must be fate in some way. (polite, said when meeting someone by chance) ご縁えんがありましたら、またよろしくお願ねがいします。 — If fate allows, I hope we meet again. (polite, a graceful goodbye)

The first sentence is a lovely, natural phrase when you discover a surprising connection with someone. For coincidences, see たまたま and 偶然ぐうぜん.

What is 運命うんめいの赤あかい糸いと?

運命うんめいの赤あかい糸いと (うんめいのあかいいと) is the red string of fate: an invisible red thread said to connect two people destined to be together, often tied to their little fingers.

二人ふたりは運命うんめいの赤あかい糸いとで結むすばれている。 — The two of them are tied by the red string of fate. (neutral, romantic)

It is a beloved image in romance anime and manga.

What is さだめ?

さだめ (定さだめ) is an old, poetic word for fate or destiny, common in songs, historical dramas and fantasy.

これが私わたしのさだめなのか。 — Is this my fate? (dramatic, literary)

Word Reading Feel Example
運命うんめい うんめい fate, can be romantic 運命うんめいの人ひと
宿命しゅくめい しゅくめい unavoidable, often tragic 宿命しゅくめいのライバル
縁えん えん gentle connection 何なにかの縁えん
さだめ さだめ poetic, old これがさだめ
運命うんめいの赤あかい糸いと うんめいのあかいいと red string of fate romance
運うん うん luck 運うんがいい

Beyond the basics

What does 運命的うんめいてき mean?

運命的うんめいてき (うんめいてき) means "fateful" or "like fate": 運命的うんめいてきな出会であい is "a fateful encounter".

あれは運命的うんめいてきな出会であいだった。 — That was a fateful encounter. (neutral, looking back)

What does 縁起えんぎ mean?

縁起えんぎ (えんぎ) is about omens and luck: 縁起えんぎがいい is "a good omen", 縁起えんぎが悪わるい is "a bad omen". It shares the 縁えん kanji.

初夢はつゆめに富士山ふじさんを見みるのは縁起えんぎがいい。 — Dreaming of Mount Fuji in your first dream of the year is a good omen. (neutral, a well-known belief)

For more on that first dream, see dream in Japanese.

Common mistakes

  • Using 運命うんめい for small luck. A free seat on the train is 運うんがいい, not 運命うんめい.
  • Using 宿命しゅくめい for romance. It usually sounds grim; 運命うんめい fits love stories.
  • Saying 運命うんめいを逆さからう. 逆さからう takes に: 運命うんめいに逆さからう.
  • Thinking 縁えん is only romantic. It covers friendships, work and chance meetings too.
  • Using さだめ in casual talk. It is poetic and dramatic.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. 運命うんめい and lines like 自分じぶんの運命うんめいは自分じぶんで決きめる come up when learners explain the themes of the stories they love, and 縁えん is the everyday word I add so they can use the idea outside fiction too.
