Famous in Japanese: 有名 (ゆうめい), and how it differs from 人気 (popular)有名 と 人気 のちがい: 「famous」の日本語
"Famous" in Japanese is 有名 (ゆうめい), a な-adjective meaning "well-known" — and it is about how many people know the name, not about whether they like it.
「famous」は日本語で「有名(ゆうめい)」です。な形容詞で、「多くの人が名前を知っている」という意味です。好きかどうかは関係ありません。
That last part is the whole trick. English "famous" and "popular" overlap a lot, but Japanese keeps them apart: 有名 means people know it, 人気 (にんき) means people love it. Once you feel that split, most of the confusing sentences sort themselves out.
The basics
How do you say "famous" in Japanese?
有名 (ゆうめい) is the standard word. Written with 有 ("to have") and 名 ("name"), it literally means "having a name" — a thing or person that people can name without being told.
彼は有名です。 — He is famous. (polite, plain statement) これは有名な映画です。 — This is a famous movie. (polite, 有名 describing a noun)
Is 有名 an い-adjective or a な-adjective?
It is a な-adjective. Before a noun it takes な, and it never ends in い even though it looks adjective-like. If that distinction still feels fuzzy, our guide to い-adjectives vs な-adjectives covers the pattern.
有名な人 — a famous person (有名 + な + noun) この店は有名です。 — This shop is famous. (polite, 有名 + です) 昔は有名じゃなかった。 — It wasn't famous in the past. (casual, negative past: じゃなかった)
The negative of 有名です is 有名ではありません (polite) or 有名じゃない (casual). Don't say 有名くない — that is い-adjective grammar.
How do you say "become famous"?
Use 有名になる. The particle に plus なる marks a change of state, so 有名になる is "to become famous."
あの歌手は有名になった。 — That singer became famous. (plain past) いつか有名になりたい。 — I want to become famous someday. (casual, 〜たい wish)
Note that に, not く: な-adjectives use になる, and い-adjectives use くなる.
How do you say "famous for ..."?
Use 〜で有名です. The particle で marks the thing the fame comes from — the means, or reason, people know the name.
京都はお寺で有名です。 — Kyoto is famous for its temples. (polite, で = reason for fame) この町はラーメンで有名です。 — This town is famous for its ramen. (polite, a place and its food) 彼は歌が上手なことで有名だ。 — He is famous for being good at singing. (plain, longer reason ending in こと)
When the reason is a whole phrase, you need ことで or ので-style grammar. For a simple noun, a plain で is enough.
有名 vs 人気: the key contrast
What is the difference between 有名 and 人気?
有名 = widely known. 人気 = widely liked. A thing can be one, the other, or both.
| Word | Core idea | Example | Can be negative? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 有名 (ゆうめい) | Many people know it | 有名な悪役 (a famous villain) | Yes — known for bad reasons too |
| 人気 (にんき) | Many people like it | 人気のある店 (a popular shop) | No — it implies positive feeling |
| 話題 (わだい) | People are talking about it right now | 話題の映画 (the much-talked-about movie) | Yes — can be neutral or heated |
| 名物 (めいぶつ) | A place's signature specialty | 町の名物 (the town's specialty) | No |
The difference shows up fastest when you try swapping them:
有名だけど、人気はない。 — Famous, but not popular. (plain, the two ideas split apart) 人気はあるけど、あまり有名じゃない。 — Liked by those who know it, but not widely known. (plain, niche appeal)
A shop can be 有名 because a news story made everyone aware of it, yet 人気がない because the food is poor. And a small cafe can be 人気 with its regulars while barely 有名 beyond the neighborhood. For the popularity side — 人気, 流行り and trends — see our article on popular in Japanese.
How do you say "popular" with 人気?
人気がある means "is popular," and 人気者 (にんきもの) means "a popular person." The noun 人気 usually pairs with ある, ない, or の.
この歌手は人気があります。 — This singer is popular. (polite, 人気 + がある) あの子はクラスの人気者だ。 — That kid is the class favorite. (plain, 人気者 = a well-liked person) 人気のない店 — an unpopular shop (の links 人気 to the noun; ない negates it)
人気者 is the word for the person everybody likes. A 有名人 can be a 人気者, but needn't be.
Beyond the basics
What are 有名人, 芸能人 and セレブ?
有名人 (ゆうめいじん) is any well-known person; 芸能人 (げいのうじん) is someone in the entertainment industry; セレブ is a glamorous, wealthy celebrity. They are not interchangeable.
有名人に会った。 — I met a famous person. (plain past, any kind of fame) 芸能人が来ている。 — An entertainer is here. (plain, TV or film personality) セレブの生活 — a celebrity's lifestyle (loanword, glamorous overtone)
If someone is famous because they run a well-known company or won a sports title, 有名人 fits. 芸能人 only fits when their job is performance.
What does 超有名 mean?
超 (ちょう) is a casual intensifier meaning "super," so 超有名 means "super famous." It is spoken, youthful, and very common among friends.
あれ、超有名な店だよ。 — That's a super famous shop, you know. (casual, friendly emphasis) めっちゃ有名 — really famous (very casual, Kansai-flavored めっちゃ)
You would not put 超有名 in a formal essay. In a report, use とても有名 or 非常に有名 instead.
What is 名物, and how does it relate to 有名?
名物 (めいぶつ) is the specialty a place is famous for — usually food or a local product. It is the noun answer to "what is this town 有名 for?"
この町の名物は焼きそばです。 — This town's specialty is yakisoba. (polite, 名物 as the thing the place is known for) 名物を食べてみたい。 — I want to try the local specialty. (casual, 〜てみたい = want to try)
So 町はラーメンで有名 and ラーメンは町の名物 describe the same fact from two angles.
How is 話題 different?
話題 (わだい) means "a topic of conversation," so 話題になる is "to become a talking point." It is about right now, and it need not mean liked.
その映画は話題になっている。 — That movie is the talk of the town. (plain, ongoing buzz) 話題の新曲 — the much-talked-about new song (の links 話題 to the noun)
話題 fades quickly. 有名 is lasting, 人気 is about affection, and 話題 is the moment of buzz.
How does 有名 sound in anime?
Anime uses 有名 for status inside a small world — a school, a guild, a neighborhood — where being known is a plot point. A character who is 有名 at school may be the strongest fighter, the top student, or someone with an embarrassing rumor.
あいつ、学校じゃ有名だよ。 — That guy is famous at school. (casual, じゃ = では contraction) 俺の名前、知らないのか? 有名なはずだぞ。 — You don't know my name? I should be famous. (rough male speech, はず = expectation) 悪い意味で有名だ。 — Famous in a bad way. (plain, 悪い意味で = in the negative sense)
That third line is a handy reminder that 有名 alone does not carry praise. You often hear 悪い意味で or いい意味で added to clarify. When the badness is the whole reason for the fame, 悪名高い is the stronger choice, and notorious in Japanese contrasts it with 有名 and the milder 評判が悪い.
Common mistakes
- Using 有名 when you mean someone is liked. 彼は有名です says he is known, not loved. If you want "he is popular," say 彼は人気があります.
- Dropping な before a noun. 有名人 is a compound word and needs no な, but 有名な店 does. Say 有名な店, not 有名店 in casual speech (有名店 exists as a set phrase in ads and reviews).
- Treating 有名 like an い-adjective. 有名くない and 有名かった are wrong. Use 有名じゃない and 有名だった.
- Saying 人気です to mean "is popular" in a flat statement. 人気です is fine, but 人気があります is the natural default, especially in writing.
- Forgetting で in 〜で有名. 京都は有名です says only that Kyoto is famous. 京都はお寺で有名です says what for.

FAQ
Is 有名 positive or negative? Neutral. It only says many people know the name. 悪い意味で有名 means "notorious," and いい意味で有名 means "famous in a good way."
What's the difference between 有名人 and 芸能人? 有名人 is anyone widely known. 芸能人 is specifically someone in entertainment — acting, singing, TV. A well-known scientist is 有名人 but not 芸能人.
Can you say 人気 for a place, not just a person? Yes. 人気のある店 and 人気スポット both work for popular shops and places. 人気者 is for people only.
How do I say "famous" for a thing like a food or a dish? Use 有名な〜 before the noun (有名な料理) or 〜で有名 for the place or maker. 名物 is the better noun when you mean a place's specialty.
Is 有名 the same as 人気 in everyday speech? Often they overlap in English translation, but not in Japanese. Ask "do people know it, or do people like it?" — that picks the word.

もっと深く
有名人・芸能人・セレブ は何が違う?
「有名人(ゆうめいじん)」は有名な人ならだれでも。「芸能人(げいのうじん)」は芸能の仕事の人。「セレブ」は華やかでお金持ちの有名人です。 同じ意味ではありません。
有名人に会った。 — I met a famous person. (ふつう・過去・どんな有名でも) 芸能人が来ている。 — An entertainer is here. (ふつう・テレビや映画の人) セレブの生活 — a celebrity's lifestyle (外来語・華やかな感じ)
会社の社長やスポーツ選手が有名なら、「有名人」です。「芸能人」は、仕事が演技や歌のときだけ使います。
超有名 はどういう意味?
「超(ちょう)」は「super」という意味の、カジュアルな強めの言葉です。「超有名」は「super famous」です。 友だちとの会話でよく使います。
あれ、超有名な店だよ。 — That's a super famous shop, you know. (カジュアル・友だちに) めっちゃ有名 — really famous (とてもカジュアル・関西っぽい「めっちゃ」)
あらたまった文章では「超有名」は使いません。レポートなら「とても有名」か「非常に有名」にします。
名物 は 有名 とどう関係する?
「名物(めいぶつ)」は、その場所が有名な食べ物や産物です。 「この町は何で有名?」の答えになる名詞です。
この町の名物は焼きそばです。 — This town's specialty is yakisoba. (ていねい・場所を代表するもの) 名物を食べてみたい。 — I want to try the local specialty. (カジュアル・「てみたい」= try したい)
「町はラーメンで有名」と「ラーメンは町の名物」は、同じ事実を2つの方向から言っています。

「話題(わだい)」は「topic of conversation」の意味です。「話題になる」は「become a talking point」です。 今のことで、好きという意味は必要ありません。
その映画は話題になっている。 — That movie is the talk of the town. (ふつう・今のうわさ) 話題の新曲 — the much-talked-about new song (「の」で名詞につなぐ)

アニメで 有名 はどう聞こえる?
アニメでは、学校やギルドなど、小さな世界の中の立場を言うときに「有名」を使います。 学校で有名なキャラクターは、いちばん強い人、成績が1番の人、またははずかしいうわさのある人かもしれません。
あいつ、学校じゃ有名だよ。 — That guy is famous at school. (カジュアル・「じゃ」=「では」) 俺の名前、知らないのか? 有名なはずだぞ。 — You don't know my name? I should be famous. (男の荒い話し方・「はず」=そう思う) 悪い意味で有名だ。 — Famous in a bad way.
