Popular in Japanese: 人気にんき vs 流行はやり, and how to say something is trending

"Popular" in Japanese is usually 人気にんき (にんき, ninki) — 人気にんきがある, "has popularity" — for something a lot of people like. If you mean "trendy" or "in fashion right now," the word is 流行はやり (はやり, hayari), from the verb 流行はやる (はやる), "to be going around."

English uses "popular" for both ideas. Japanese splits them. A ramen shop that has had a queue for twenty years is 人気にんき. A drink that everyone on social media tried last month is 流行はやり. Mix them up and your sentence is still understandable, but it says something slightly different from what you meant.

The basics

How do you say "popular" in Japanese?

Use 人気にんき with the verb ある: 人気にんきがある, "is popular." To put it in front of a noun, use 人気にんきの or the compound 人気にんきがある + noun.

この店みせはとても人気にんきがある。 — This shop is really popular. (plain, the default sentence) 人気にんきのアニメを教おしえてください。 — Please tell me some popular anime. (人気にんきの + noun)

You will also see 人気にんき stuck directly onto other words as a prefix or suffix: 人気にんき店みせ (a popular shop), 人気にんき作さく (a popular work), 大人気だいにんき (hugely popular).

今いま、大人気だいにんきのゲームです。 — It is a hugely popular game right now. (大だい adds "very")

How do you say "trendy" or "in fashion"?

Use 流行はやる (はやる) as a verb or 流行はやり (はやり) as a noun. The verb is usually in the ている form, because a trend is a state that is going on.

最近さいきん、この歌うたが流行はやっている。 — This song is going around lately. (流行はやっている = is trending) それ、今いまの流行はやりだよ。 — That is what is in right now. (流行はやり as a noun)

流行はやる is also the word for illnesses spreading. インフルエンザが流行はやっている means "the flu is going around." That is a good clue to its feel: it is about something spreading through a crowd at a particular time, not about being liked.

What is the formal word for a trend?

流行りゅうこう read as りゅうこう is the written, slightly formal version. News and magazines use it; friends mostly say はやり.

今年ことしの流行りゅうこう色いろは緑みどりです。 — The trend color this year is green. (流行りゅうこう色いろ, magazine style)

Beyond the basics

Can 人気にんき be a person, not a thing?

Yes. 人気者にんきもの (にんきもの) is "a popular person," the one everyone in the class likes. For a crush-worthy person you will more often hear モテる, "to be popular with the opposite sex," which is a different word altogether.

彼かれはクラスの人気者にんきものだ。 — He is the most popular kid in class. (liked by everyone) あの先輩せんぱい、すごくモテるよね。 — That senior is really popular with girls, isn't he? (romantic popularity)

If you want to say "not popular," 人気にんきがない works, but 不人気ふにんき (ふにんき) exists as a flat label for things like an unpopular policy or menu item. A shop that one news story made 有名ゆうめい (famous) can still be 人気にんきがない if the food is poor, a split famous in Japanese spells out.

What happens when a trend ends?

The past form 流行はやった means "was a trend." 流行はやりが終おわった or もう古ふるい say it is over. And ブーム ("boom") is a loanword for a big, visible wave of popularity.

あのダンス、去年きょねんすごく流行はやったよね。 — That dance was huge last year, right? (流行はやった = it was trending) タピオカのブームはもう終おわった。 — The tapioca boom is already over. (ブーム = a craze)

How does this sound in anime?

Anime uses 人気にんき constantly in school stories — 人気投票にんきとうひょう (a popularity poll) is a stock episode where the cast competes for votes. 流行はやり tends to show up when an older character is baffled by what young people like: 最近さいきんの若者わかものの流行はやりは分わからん, "I don't get what young people are into these days." The word carries that slightly outsider feeling: a trend is something other people are into.

人気投票にんきとうひょうで一位いちいになった! — I came first in the popularity poll! (人気投票にんきとうひょう, a school or fandom vote)

For other words that describe what is hot among young people, コスパ and タイパ and the slang in ワンチャン are good neighbours to this one.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 人気にんきです without ある for "is popular." 人気にんきです is heard in shops (これが人気にんきです, "this is the popular one"), but for a general statement 人気にんきがある is safer and more natural.
  • Using 流行はやる for something that has been liked for decades. 富士山ふじさんは流行はやっている sounds like Mount Fuji suddenly became a fad. Use 人気にんきがある.
  • Using 人気にんき for an illness. 風邪かぜが人気にんき is nonsense. Illnesses 流行はやる.
  • Reading 流行りゅうこう as はやり in a formal phrase. 流行りゅうこう色いろ and 流行語りゅうこうご use りゅう, not はやり.
  • Translating "popular with girls" as 女の子おんなのこに人気にんきがある in romance. It is not wrong, but モテる is what people actually say.

Practice

Try each one before opening the answer. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: two ramen shops, two different meanings of "popular."

1. Say "This anime is popular."

Show answer

このアニメは人気にんきがある。 — 人気にんき plus ある is the standard way to say something is popular.

2. Say "This song is trending lately."

Show answer

最近さいきん、この歌うたが流行はやっている。 — a trend is going on right now, so 流行はやる goes in the ている form.

3. A ramen shop has had a queue for twenty years. Is it 人気にんき or 流行はやり?

Show answer

人気にんきがある — it has been liked for a long time. That is 人気にんき, not a passing trend.

4. A new ramen shop went viral last month and everyone is posting about it. Which word fits best?

Show answer

流行はやっている — it spread quickly through a crowd at one moment. That is exactly what 流行はやる describes.

5. What is wrong with 風邪かぜが人気にんきです?

Show answer

Illnesses do not have 人気にんき. They spread, so the verb is 流行はやる: 風邪かぜが流行はやっている, "a cold is going around."

6. How do you read 流行りゅうこう in 流行りゅうこう色いろ?

Show answer

りゅうこう — the formal compound reading. はやり is the everyday spoken word.

7. Say "That dance was huge last year."

Show answer

あのダンス、去年きょねんすごく流行はやった。 — 流行はやった is the past form, "was a trend."

8. What is a 人気者にんきもの?

Show answer

A popular person — someone everyone likes, such as the most liked kid in a class. 者もの means "person."

9. Your friend says someone is popular with girls. Which word would a Japanese speaker most likely use?

Show answer

モテる — romantic popularity has its own verb. 人気にんきがある is about being liked in general.

With a teacher in a trial lesson, talk about a 人気にんき anime and a 流行はやり fashion, and practise how to tell a friend that something is trending.

FAQ

What is the most common way to say "popular" in Japanese? 人気にんきがある. It works for shops, anime, people, food and almost anything else that many people like.

What is the difference between 人気にんき and 流行はやり? 人気にんき is about being liked, often for a long time. 流行はやり is about being in fashion at a particular moment. Something can be both, but a trend can also be something nobody will remember next year.

Is 流行はやる only for fashion? No. It is used for songs, words, games, and also illnesses spreading. The common idea is "going around a lot of people right now."

How do you say "unpopular" in Japanese? 人気にんきがない in normal speech, or 不人気ふにんき as a short label. For a person who is not popular romantically, people say モテない.

What is 流行語りゅうこうご? Buzzwords of a given year. Japan picks a 流行語りゅうこうご大賞たいしょう, a "buzzword of the year," every December, and the list is a quick way to see what people were talking about.

Is ブーム the same as 流行はやり? Close. ブーム stresses a big, visible wave — a boom — while 流行はやり can be small, like a trend in one school.
