Discrimination in Japanese: 差別さべつ (さべつ) vs 区別くべつ (くべつ), and 差別化さべつか

"Discrimination" in the sense of unfair treatment is 差別さべつ (さべつ) in Japanese: 人種差別じんしゅさべつ is racial discrimination. But "discriminate" in the neutral sense of telling things apart is 区別くべつ (くべつ): 双子ふたごの区別くべつがつかない, "I can't tell the twins apart". Mixing these two up changes the meaning completely.

English "discriminate" has two meanings: treating people unfairly, and distinguishing between things. Japanese gives each its own word, and they share a kanji, 別べつ, "separate". 差別さべつ is a serious word about injustice, while 区別くべつ is an ordinary word you use for laundry, recycling and twins. There is even a third, positive cousin in business, 差別化さべつか. This post sorts them out.

What is the difference between 差別さべつ and 区別くべつ?

What does 差別さべつ mean?

差別さべつ (さべつ) is discrimination: treating people unfairly because of who they are. 差別さべつする is "to discriminate", and 差別さべつされる is "to be discriminated against".

差別さべつは許ゆるされない。 — Discrimination cannot be tolerated. (neutral, a firm statement) 見た目みためで人ひとを差別さべつしてはいけない。 — You must not discriminate against people based on appearance. (neutral)

Common compounds include 人種差別じんしゅさべつ (じんしゅさべつ, racial discrimination), 男女差別だんじょさべつ (だんじょさべつ, gender discrimination), and 年齢差ねんれいさ別べつ (ねんれいさべつ, age discrimination).

What does 区別くべつ mean?

区別くべつ (くべつ) means distinguishing or telling things apart. It is neutral, with no judgment.

燃もえるゴミと燃もえないゴミを区別くべつしてください。 — Please separate burnable and non-burnable trash. (polite, a rule) 双子ふたごの区別くべつがつかない。 — I can't tell the twins apart. (casual)

区別くべつがつく is "can tell apart", and 区別くべつがつかない is "can't tell apart". The 別べつ inside 区別くべつ also stands alone, as in 別べつの店みせ, "some other shop", and different in Japanese sets it against 違ちがう店みせ, a shop that is unlike the one you were talking about.

Why does mixing them up matter?

Because 差別さべつ implies injustice. If you say 犬いぬと猫ねこを差別さべつする, it sounds like you treat dogs and cats unfairly. 犬いぬと猫ねこを区別くべつする simply means telling them apart.

AとBを区別くべつする。 — To distinguish A from B. (neutral) AとBを差別さべつする。 — To discriminate between A and B unfairly. (a criticism)

Word Reading Meaning Tone
差別さべつ さべつ unfair discrimination serious, negative
区別くべつ くべつ distinction, telling apart neutral
差別化さべつか さべつか differentiation (business) positive
見分みわける みわける to tell apart by looking neutral
偏見へんけん へんけん prejudice negative

What other related words are there?

What does 見分みわける mean?

見分みわける (みわける) means to tell apart by looking. It is close to 区別くべつする but focuses on seeing the difference.

本物ほんものと偽物にせものを見分みわけるのは難むずかしい。 — It's hard to tell the real thing from a fake. (neutral)

How is 差別さべつ related to 偏見へんけん?

偏見へんけん (へんけん) is prejudice, the attitude. 差別さべつ is the action, treating someone unfairly. We explain the attitude side in prejudice in Japanese.

偏見へんけんが差別さべつにつながることがある。 — Prejudice can lead to discrimination. (neutral)

Beyond the basics

What does 差別化さべつか mean?

差別化さべつか (さべつか) is a business word meaning "differentiation": making your product stand out from competitors. Despite the 差別さべつ inside it, it is positive.

他社たしゃとの差別化さべつかが大切たいせつだ。 — Differentiating ourselves from other companies is important. (neutral, business)

This surprises many learners, so it is worth remembering as a fixed term.

What does 特別扱とくべつあつかい mean?

特別扱とくべつあつかい (とくべつあつかい) is special treatment, treating someone differently in a favorable way. It can be a complaint if it seems unfair.

新人しんじんだけ特別扱とくべつあつかいされている。 — Only the newcomer is getting special treatment. (casual, a complaint)

For 特別とくべつ, see futsuu meaning, which contrasts ordinary and special.

How do you talk about fairness?

公平こうへい (こうへい) means "fair, impartial", and 不公平ふこうへい (ふこうへい) means "unfair".

それは不公平ふこうへいだ。 — That's unfair. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Using 差別さべつ for sorting or telling apart. That is 区別くべつ.
  • Thinking 差別化さべつか is negative. In business, it means positive differentiation.
  • Saying 区別くべつがわからない. The natural phrase is 区別くべつがつかない.
  • Confusing 差別さべつ and 偏見へんけん. 偏見へんけん is the attitude; 差別さべつ is the action.
  • Using 差別さべつ casually as a joke. It is a serious word.
