普通ふつう (futsuu) meaning: "normal", and the slang 普通ふつうに that means "actually, genuinely

普通ふつう (ふつう, futsuu) means "normal", "usual" or "ordinary": 普通ふつうの人ひと is "an ordinary person", and 普通ふつうは means "usually". In casual speech, 普通ふつうに has a newer meaning, "actually" or "genuinely": 普通ふつうにおいしい means "it's genuinely good", not "it's average".

普通ふつう is a word you learn early and then keep meeting in new places: on train platforms, at the bank, in restaurant reviews, and in teenage slang. Most of these uses grow from one idea, "the normal standard". The surprise is the slang 普通ふつうに, which sounds like it should mean "normally" and often means something closer to "honestly, really". This post takes you from the basic meaning to that twist, with the everyday places you will see the word.

What does 普通ふつう mean?

Is 普通ふつう a noun or an adjective?

Both. It works as a な-adjective with の or な before nouns (普通ふつうの人ひと, 普通ふつうな感かんじ), and as a noun (普通ふつうです). 普通ふつうの is far more common than 普通ふつうな before a noun.

私わたしは普通ふつうの会社員かいしゃいんです。 — I'm just an ordinary office worker. (polite, modest self-description) それは日本にほんでは普通ふつうです。 — That's normal in Japan. (polite, explaining a custom)

The kanji are 普ふ (wide, general) and 通とおり (to pass through, common). Something 普通ふつう is what generally passes as normal.

How do you say "usually" with 普通ふつう?

Use 普通ふつうは (ふつうは), "usually" or "as a rule". It describes what normally happens, often before an exception.

普通ふつうは七時しちじに起おきますが、今日きょうは寝坊ねぼうしました。 — I usually get up at seven, but today I overslept. (polite, a routine with an exception) 普通ふつうはそんなことしないよ。 — People don't normally do that. (casual, a mild criticism)

For "usually", the standard form is 普通ふつうは. 普通ふつうには mostly shows up in set phrases like 普通ふつうには考かんがえられない ("you wouldn't normally think so"); the difference between は and には is explained in the particle には.

How do you say "not normal" or "unusual"?

Say 普通ふつうじゃない, "not normal", or use a different word like 珍めずらしい (めずらしい), "rare, unusual".

この暑あつさは普通ふつうじゃない。 — This heat isn't normal. (casual, a complaint) 雪ゆきが降ふるのは珍めずらしいです。 — It's unusual for it to snow. (polite, a neutral fact)

普通ふつうじゃない can be a complaint or, in anime, a compliment for a character with extraordinary power: あいつは普通ふつうじゃない, "that guy is not normal".

What does the slang 普通ふつうに mean?

Why does 普通ふつうにおいしい mean "really good"?

Because in casual speech, 普通ふつうに often means "genuinely, honestly, without exaggerating". It says "this is good by any normal standard", or "contrary to what you might expect, it's good".

これ、普通ふつうにおいしい! — This is actually really good! (casual, pleasantly surprised) 普通ふつうに面白おもしろかったよ。 — It was genuinely fun. (casual, a sincere recommendation)

Learners often read 普通ふつうにおいしい as "it tastes average", which is close to the opposite. The tone is the clue: said with a smile and raised eyebrows, it is praise. It is usually understated praise, closer to "really quite good" than to wild enthusiasm. For "average", people say まあまあ or 普通ふつうかな.

How do you say "it's average" then?

Say まあまあ (so-so) or 普通ふつうかな, "I guess it's normal". Here 普通ふつう is the plain noun again, not the adverb.

味あじは普通ふつうかな。 — The taste is just average, I guess. (casual, unimpressed) まあまあです。 — It's so-so. (polite, neutral)

So the difference is where 普通ふつう sits. 普通ふつうに before a verb or adjective is the slang "really". 普通ふつう at the end, as a comment, is "nothing special".

Can 普通ふつうに also mean "normally"?

Yes, and context decides. 普通ふつうに歩あるいて, "walk normally", is literal. The slang meaning appears when 普通ふつうに comes before an evaluation like おいしい, 面白おもしろい or すごい.

普通ふつうに歩あるいて十分じゅうぶんぐらいです。 — It's about ten minutes on foot at a normal pace. (polite, giving directions)

Where will you see 普通ふつう in daily life?

What is 普通電車ふつうでんしゃ?

普通電車ふつうでんしゃ (ふつうでんしゃ), or just 普通ふつう, is a local train that stops at every station. On platforms you will see 普通ふつう next to 快速かいそく (かいそく, rapid) and 急行きゅうこう (きゅうこう, express).

この駅えきは普通ふつうしか止とまりません。 — Only local trains stop at this station. (polite, giving directions)

If you are riding trains in Japan, this is one of the most useful kanji pairs to recognize. For more train words, see train in Japanese.

What is 普通預金ふつうよきん?

普通預金ふつうよきん (ふつうよきん) is an ordinary savings account, the standard bank account in Japan. On forms it is often shortened to 普通ふつう, and the other common type is 当座とうざ (とうざ), a business checking account.

口座こうざの種類しゅるいは普通ふつうです。 — The account type is ordinary savings. (polite, filling in a form)

When someone gives you bank details for a transfer, 普通ふつう is almost always the account type.

What is 普通郵便ふつうゆうびん?

普通郵便ふつうゆうびん (ふつうゆうびん) is regular mail, as opposed to express or registered mail. At the post office, 普通ふつうで is "by regular mail, please".

Beyond the basics

Can 普通ふつう be an insult?

Yes. Calling something or someone just 普通ふつう can sound like "boring" or "nothing special". 普通ふつうの人ひと can be modest about yourself, but 彼かれは普通ふつうだね about someone else can sound dismissive.

彼かれの絵えは上手じょうずだけど、普通ふつうだね。 — His drawings are skilled, but kind of ordinary. (casual, mild criticism)

The opposite, praise for being special, is 特別とくべつ (とくべつ), "special", or 個性的こせいてき (こせいてき), "distinctive".

What does 普段ふだん mean?

普段ふだん (ふだん) means "usually, in daily life" and is close to 普通ふつうは, but focuses on your everyday routine. 普段着ふだんぎ (ふだんぎ) is everyday clothes.

普段ふだんは家いえで料理りょうりをします。 — I usually cook at home. (polite, a routine)

The difference: 普通ふつうは means "as a rule", even about your own habits, like waking up at seven; 普段ふだん points to the ordinary days themselves, not the rule. For frequency words like いつも and 時々ときどき, see frequency adverbs.
