Desk in Japanese: 机つくえ (つくえ), デスク, 机つくえに向むかう, and the front desk

"Desk" in Japanese is 机つくえ (つくえ). Office desks are often called デスク, a child's study desk is 勉強べんきょう机つくえ (べんきょうづくえ), and 机つくえに向むかう, "to face the desk", means to sit down and study or work. For a front desk, Japanese uses 受付うけつけ (うけつけ) or フロント.

机つくえ is one of the first nouns in Japanese textbooks, usually in a sentence like 机つくえの上うえに本ほんがあります. But the word also shows up in idioms and in office life, where the English loanword デスク takes over. This post shows which word fits which place.

What about a desk at school?

In Japanese classrooms, each student has a small desk and chair, and students move them to the back when they clean the classroom at the end of the day. The cleaning time is called 掃除そうじの時間じかん, and pushing the desks together is a familiar school memory for many people. When anime shows students carrying their desks, this is what is happening. The chair that goes with each of those desks is 椅子いす, and chair in Japanese adds 座すわる for sitting down and explains why a reserved seat is 席せき, not 椅子いす.

Common mistakes

  • Using 机つくえ for a dining table. Use テーブル.
  • Reading 勉強べんきょう机つくえ as べんきょうつくえ. It is べんきょうづくえ.
  • Calling a hotel front desk 受付うけつけ. フロント is usual.
  • Taking 机つくえに向むかう literally. It means to study or work.
  • Reading 机上きじょう as つくえうえ. It is きじょう.
