Darkness in Japanese: 闇やみ (やみ), 暗くらい, and what it means when a character goes 闇やみ落おち

"Darkness" in Japanese is 闇やみ (やみ, yami), and the adjective "dark" is 暗くらい (くらい, kurai). When the room is pitch-black, say 真っ暗まっくら (まっくら). And in anime, a hero who turns evil is said to go 闇やみ落おち (やみおち), "fall into darkness".

Learners often start with 暗くらい from a textbook ("the room is dark") and then meet 闇やみ in anime, where it sounds dramatic and mysterious. Both are right, and they do different jobs: 暗くらい describes how much light there is, while 闇やみ is darkness as a thing, often with a hint of danger, secrecy or evil. This post covers the everyday words first, then the dramatic ones, and finishes with 光ひかり (ひかり), the light that darkness is always paired with.

How do you say "darkness" in Japanese?

What is the everyday word for "dark"?

暗くらい (くらい) is the normal adjective for "dark": not enough light.

この部屋へやは暗くらいね。電気でんきをつけよう。 — This room is dark. Let's turn on the light. (casual) 冬ふゆは暗くらくなるのが早はやい。 — It gets dark early in winter. (casual, 暗くらくなる = become dark)

暗くらい is an い-adjective, so it changes like other い-adjectives: 暗くらくない (not dark), 暗くらかった (was dark). Its opposite is 明あかるい (あかるい), "bright". Our post on い- and な-adjectives covers the patterns.

What is 真っ暗まっくら?

真っ暗まっくら (まっくら) is "pitch-black", completely dark. 真まことっ adds "completely" to colors and states, like 真っ白まっしろ (pure white) and 真っ赤まっか (bright red).

停電ていでんで、部屋へやが真っ暗まっくらになった。 — The power went out and the room went pitch-black. (neutral) 外そとはもう真っ暗まっくらだ。 — It's already pitch-dark outside. (casual)

The same 真まことっ gives 真っ黒まっくろ, and black in Japanese shows it stretching beyond pitch black to a deep tan (日焼ひやけで真っ黒まっくろ).

暗闇くらやみ (くらやみ) is a noun for "the dark": 暗闇くらやみの中なかで, "in the dark". It is common in stories and horror.

What is 闇やみ?

闇やみ (やみ) is darkness itself, as a thing, and it usually carries a sense of mystery, danger or evil.

闇やみの中なかから声こえが聞きこえた。 — A voice came from the darkness. (neutral, storytelling) 夜よるの闇やみに消きえた。 — He vanished into the darkness of night. (written, dramatic)

You would not say 闇やみ about a dim room with a bulb out. You would say it about the darkness of a forest at night, of a secret, or of a villain's heart. A memory hook for the kanji (not its real origin; 音おと only gives the sound): 門もん (gate) with 音おと (sound) inside, a doorway where you can hear but not see.

Beyond the basics

What does 闇やみ落おち mean?

闇やみ落おち (やみおち), "falling into darkness", is fan slang for a good character turning evil.

あのキャラ、闇やみ落おちしたね。 — That character went over to the dark side. (casual, fan talk)

It is one of the most popular plot turns in anime and games: a friend, a rival or even the hero gives in to anger, grief or a dark power. Fans also say 闇やみ落おちルート, "the dark route", for a story path where this happens.

What is 心こころの闇やみ?

心こころの闇やみ (こころのやみ), "the darkness of the heart", is a person's hidden pain, anger or dark side.

彼かれには心こころの闇やみがある。 — He has a dark side inside him. (neutral, a little dramatic)

It appears in news reports, dramas and character analysis. In anime discussions, a character with deep 心こころの闇やみ is usually the one with the most tragic backstory. The 心こころ in 心こころの闇やみ is the heart where feelings and thoughts live, not the organ 心臓しんぞう, and heart in Japanese explains why 心こころが痛いたい at a doctor's office would sound emotional rather than physical.

What other 闇やみ words appear in the news?

闇やみ also means "illegal, underground, black market".

Word Reading Meaning
闇市やみいち やみいち black market
闇金やみきん やみきん illegal loan shark
闇やみバイト やみバイト illegal "part-time job" scam work

闇やみバイトに気きをつけてください。 — Please watch out for illegal part-time job offers. (polite, a public warning)

闇やみバイト has become a common warning in recent Japanese news: offers on social media that look like easy part-time work but are actually crimes. If you see the word, it is always a warning.

How is 暗くらい used about people?

A 暗くらい person is gloomy, quiet and negative. It is the opposite of 明あかるい, which describes a cheerful, outgoing personality.

彼女かのじょは明あかるくて、みんなに好すかれている。 — She's cheerful and everyone likes her. (neutral) 今日きょうはなんだか暗くらいね。どうしたの? — You seem kind of down today. What's up? (casual, concern)

Calling someone 暗くらい directly can hurt, because it sounds like a judgment of their personality. Our post on personality adjectives has gentler words.

What is the opposite of 闇やみ?

光ひかり (ひかり), "light". 光ひかと闇やみ, "light and darkness", is a classic pair in fantasy and anime.

光ひかと闇やみの戦たたかい。 — The battle between light and darkness. (neutral, a fantasy theme) 闇やみの中なかに、小ちいさな光ひかりが見みえた。 — In the darkness, I saw a small light. (neutral, hopeful)

Fantasy stories often give characters 光ひかり or 闇やみ powers, and the "light" side is not always the good one. Fans of 遊ゆう☆戯ぎ☆王おう will remember 闇やみ遊戯ゆうぎ (やみゆうぎ), "Dark Yugi", known in English as Yami Yugi.

What are 暗黒あんこく and 漆黒しっこく?

暗黒あんこく (あんこく) is "utter darkness", and 漆黒しっこく (しっこく) is "jet black". Both are dramatic words loved by 中二ちゅうに病びょう style.

漆黒しっこくの翼つばさ。 — Jet-black wings. (dramatic, a typical edgy-teenager phrase)

They sound grand and serious, which is exactly why teenagers going through a dramatic phase love them. Our post on chuunibyou explains that style.

Common mistakes

  • Using 闇やみ for an ordinary dark room. Use 暗くらい or 真っ暗まっくら.
  • Reading 暗闇くらやみ as あんやみ. It is くらやみ.
  • Calling someone 暗くらい to their face. It sounds like a judgment. Ask if they are okay instead.
  • Mixing up 暗くらい and 黒くろい. 暗くらい is "dark" (little light); 黒くろい is "black" (a color).
  • Treating 闇やみバイト as a real job. It is a warning word for criminal recruitment.
