Brain in Japanese: 脳のう (のう), 脳のうみそ, 脳のうトレ, and 脳内のうない

"Brain" in Japanese is 脳のう (のう). The casual, slightly funny word is 脳のうみそ (のうみそ), "brain miso". Brainpower or a mastermind is 頭脳ずのう (ずのう), brain training games are 脳のうトレ (のうトレ), and something happening only in your imagination is 脳内のうない (のうない).

In daily life, Japanese people talk about 頭あたま (head) more than 脳のう when they mean thinking, as in 頭あたまがいい (smart). 脳のう shows up in science, health, and some very popular slang. This post covers both.

How do you say "brain" in Japanese?

What does 脳のう mean?

脳のう (のう) is the brain as an organ. It is used in science, medicine, and the news.

脳のうは体からだの中なかでたくさんのエネルギーを使つかう。 — The brain uses a lot of the body's energy. (written style) 寝ねている間あいだも脳のうは働はたらいている。 — Your brain keeps working while you sleep. (casual)

What is 脳のうみそ?

脳のうみそ (のうみそ), "brain miso", is the casual word for brains, often in jokes.

もう脳のうみそが疲つかれた。 — My brain is fried. (casual)

What is 頭脳ずのう?

頭脳ずのう (ずのう) is brainpower or intellect, and also the brains of a team.

彼かれはチームの頭脳ずのうだ。 — He's the brains of the team. (casual)

How do you say "smart" in Japanese?

Japanese usually uses 頭あたま (あたま, head), not 脳のう. 頭あたまがいい is smart, 頭あたまを使つかう is to use your head.

頭あたまを使つかうゲームが好すき。 — I like games that make you think. (casual)

頭あたまがいい is only one way to call someone smart: smart in Japanese shows how 賢かしこい praises a sensible choice while 頭あたまが切きれる describes the sharp, quick mind you meet in business and arguments.

For a related phrase, see crazy in Japanese.

Word Reading Meaning
脳のう のう brain
脳のうみそ のうみそ brains (casual)
頭脳ずのう ずのう brainpower
脳のうトレ のうトレ brain training
脳内のうない のうない in one's head
頭あたまがいい あたまがいい smart
頭あたまを使つかう あたまをつかう to use one's head
脳のう筋きん のうきん all muscle, no brains

What about 頭あたまが固かたい and 頭あたまが柔やわらかい?

頭あたまが固かたい (hard head) means stubborn or inflexible in thinking, and 頭あたまが柔やわらかい (soft head) means flexible and creative. Again, Japanese uses 頭あたま for the mind here, not 脳のう.

祖母そぼは頭あたまが柔やわらかくて、新あたらしいことが好すきだ。 — My grandmother is open-minded and loves new things. (casual)

What is 脳のうトレ?

脳のうトレ (のうトレ), short for 脳のうトレーニング, is brain training. Puzzle books and games with this name are popular with all ages.

毎朝まいあさ、脳のうトレのアプリをしている。 — I do a brain training app every morning. (casual)

What slang uses 脳のう?

What does 脳内のうない mean?

脳内のうない (のうない), "inside the brain", is something you imagine. 脳内のうない再生さいせい is when a song or voice plays in your head.

あのセリフが声優せいゆうの声こえで脳内のうない再生さいせいされる。 — I can hear that line in the voice actor's voice in my head. (casual)

What is 脳のう筋きん?

脳のう筋きん (のうきん), short for 脳のうみそまで筋肉きんにく, "muscles all the way to the brain", is a joking word for someone who solves everything with strength. It is a common anime character type.

あのキャラは脳のう筋きんだけど優やさしい。 — That character is all brawn, but kind. (casual)

What is 脳のうが溶とける?

脳のうが溶とける, "my brain is melting", is a joke for heat or for something so cute or sweet you can't think.

暑あつすぎて脳のうが溶とけそう。 — It's so hot my brain is melting. (casual)

Is 脳のう used in health talk?

Yes. Doctors and TV programs talk about 脳のうの健康けんこう (brain health) and 脳のうを休やすめる (resting your brain). Sleep, walking, and conversation are often recommended, and 脳のうトレ puzzle books are popular with older readers too.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 頭脳ずのう as あたまのう. It is ずのう.
  • Using 脳のう筋きん as a compliment. It is a tease.
