White in Japanese: 白しろ (しろ), 白しろい, 真っ白まっしろ, 白紙はくし, and 白状はくじょうする

"White" in Japanese is 白しろ (しろ) as a noun and 白しろい (しろい) as an adjective. Pure white is 真っ白まっしろ (まっしろ).

We start with 白しろ and 白しろい, then move to related words and idioms: 頭あたまが真っ白まっしろになる (one's mind goes blank), 白紙はくしに戻もどす (scrap a plan), 白状はくじょうする (confess), 白い目しろいめ and ホワイト企業きぎょう. Readings: 白しろ is しろ, 白しろい is しろい, and 白紙はくし is はくし. 白髪しらが (しらが) is best learned as a whole word.

How do you say "white" in Japanese?

What is the difference between 白しろ and 白しろい?

白しろ (しろ) is the noun "white", and 白しろい (しろい) is the い-adjective.

白しろいシャツを着きている。 — He's wearing a white shirt. (casual) 白しろが好すきです。 — I like white. (polite)

白しろいのが好すきです ("I like the white one") is also correct, because の stands in for a noun.

For the grammar of color words, see Japanese colors.

Which form goes before a noun: 白しろい, 白しろの, or 真っ白まっしろな?

白しろい is the default. 白しろの also works, and 真っ白まっしろな means "pure white".

Phrase Feel
白しろいシャツ the normal way to say "a white shirt"
白しろのシャツ also "a white shirt", often when naming a color choice in a shop ("the white one" is 白しろいの or 白しろいほう)
真っ白まっしろなシャツ a completely, purely white shirt
白しろっぽいシャツ a whitish shirt, not quite white

For skin, 肌はだが白しろい and 色いろが白しろい both work, and 色白いろじろ (いろじろ) is another common way to describe fair skin: 彼女かのじょは色白いろじろだ, "She has fair skin."

What does 真っ白まっしろ mean?

真っ白まっしろ (まっしろ) means pure white, completely white. It is an emphasized form of 白しろい, but grammatically it is a な-adjective. It can also mean "blank", as in 頭あたまが真っ白まっしろになる.

外そとは雪ゆきで真っ白まっしろだ。 — Everything outside is white with snow. (casual) 緊張きんちょう(きんちょう)で頭あたまが真っ白まっしろになった。 — My mind went blank from nerves. (casual)

Watch the grammar. 頭あたまが真っ白まっしろだ describes a state: "my mind is blank right now". 頭あたまが真っ白まっしろになった describes the change: "my mind went blank". Depending on context, 真っ白まっしろ can also mean that nothing is written or planned yet, as in 予定表よていひょうが真っ白まっしろだ. For an empty sheet as a thing, the noun is 白紙はくし (below).

Characters in anime often trail off with 頭あたまが真っ白まっしろになって…… and leave the sentence unfinished.

The two adjectives conjugate differently: 白しろい壁かべ (a white wall) and 壁かべが白しろくなる (the wall turns white), but 真っ白まっしろな壁かべ and 壁かべが真っ白まっしろになる.

What are some everyday white things?

白しろご飯はん (しろごはん) is plain white rice, 白しろワイン is white wine, and 白髪しらが (しらが) is gray or white hair, with a special reading.

白しろご飯はんが一番好いちばんすき。 — Plain white rice is my favorite. (casual)

You can also say 白しろいご飯はん. 白しろご飯はん sounds like a name for the dish itself, plain rice with nothing on it.

What does white mean beyond color?

What does 白紙はくしに戻もどす mean?

白紙はくし (はくし) is blank paper. 白紙はくしに戻もどす means to cancel a plan or agreement and return to the original, undecided state.

二ふたつの会社かいしゃは契約けいやく(けいやく)を白紙はくしに戻もどした。 — The two companies scrapped the contract. (neutral) 旅行りょこうの計画けいかくは白紙はくしになった。 — The trip plans fell through. (casual)

The phrase says "cancel it and treat it as if nothing was decided". It does not promise that anyone starts over. On a test, 答案とうあん(とうあん)は白紙はくしだった means "the answer sheet was blank".

What does 白状はくじょうする mean?

白状はくじょうする (はくじょうする) means to confess something you were hiding, usually a wrongdoing. The 白しろ here comes from an old sense of "to state", not from the color.

白状はくじょうすると、まだ宿題しゅくだいやってないんだ。 — To come clean, I haven't done my homework yet. (casual) 全部ぜんぶ白状はくじょうしなさい。 — Confess everything. (a firm order, for example a parent to a child)

For plain honesty, say 正直しょうじきに (see Common mistakes).

What does 白い目しろいめで見みられる mean?

白い目しろいめで見みられる, "to be looked at with white eyes", means to be given cold, disapproving looks. See 変へんな目めで見みられる and 白い目しろいめで見みられる.

電車でんしゃで大声おおごえで話はなして、白い目しろいめで見みられた。 — I talked loudly on the train and got cold looks. (casual)

How does 白しろ show up in conversation and anime?

Where does 真っ白まっしろな灰はい come from?

It is a famous image from the boxing manga 『あしたのジョー』, where the hero burns himself out to "pure white ash". It means giving everything you have.

People borrow it as a joke when they are exhausted, but the ordinary sentence is plainer.

残業ざんぎょう(ざんぎょう)続つづきで、もう燃ねん(も)え尽じん(つ)きたよ……。 — After all that overtime, I'm burnt out. (casual) 残業ざんぎょう続つづきで、真っ白まっしろな灰はいになったよ。 — Same, with the manga joke. (casual, joking; works best with people who know the manga)

What is ホワイト企業きぎょう?

ホワイト企業きぎょう is a "white company": a good employer with fair hours and treatment, the opposite of a ブラック企業きぎょう. See black company in Japanese.

ホワイト企業きぎょうに就職しゅうしょくしたい。 — I want to work for a company that treats people well. (casual)

What does 白しろ mean in crime dramas?

In detective talk, 白しろ means innocent or not involved, and 黒くろ means guilty or involved. It is a judgment made in conversation, not a legal verdict.

彼かれは白しろだと思おもう。 — I think he's innocent. (casual, drama style)

What is 白無垢しろむく?

白無垢しろむく (しろむく) is a pure white bridal kimono, a traditional wedding outfit worn at Shinto-style ceremonies and others.

神社じんじゃで結婚式けっこんしきを挙あげて、白無垢しろむくを着きた。 — She had her wedding at a shrine and wore a white wedding kimono. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 白しろいが好すき. The noun is 白しろ: 白しろが好すき.
  • Saying 頭あたまが白しろいになった. 白しろい cannot take になった like that. Say 頭あたまが真っ白まっしろになった for a blank mind, or 壁かべが白しろくなった for a wall turning white.
  • Reading 白紙はくし as しろかみ. It is はくし.
  • Reading 白状はくじょう as しろじょう. It is はくじょう.
  • Using 白状はくじょうする for plain honesty. 面接めんせつでは正直しょうじきに答こたえた, "I answered honestly in the interview", is correct. 面接めんせつで白状はくじょうした would sound as if you admitted something you had been hiding.

FAQ

Does Japanese have a word for a "white lie"? Not one built on 白しろ. Depending on the context, say たわいないうそ (a harmless fib) or 相手あいてを傷きずつけないためのうそ (a lie told to avoid hurting someone).

Is 色白いろじろ a compliment? It can be used as a compliment. 色白いろじろだね, "you have fair skin", is sometimes said as a friendly remark, but it is still a comment on someone's body, so use it with people you know well.

Why is ホワイト企業きぎょう written in katakana? ホワイト is the English word "white" borrowed into Japanese. The set phrase is ホワイト企業きぎょう, not 白しろい企業きぎょう.

What is the opposite of 白しろ? 黒くろ (くろ). Together, 白黒しろくろ (しろくろ) means black and white, and 白黒しろくろをつける means to settle a matter decisively, such as determining right and wrong or the winner.
