Sad and lonely in Japanese: 悲かなしい vs 寂さびしい, and 切せつない in between

悲かなしい (kanashii) is sad because something happened; 寂さびしい (sabishii) is sad because someone or something is missing — and 切せつない (setsunai) is the ache in between that English has no single word for.

English lets "sad" cover all of it, and "lonely" sits off to the side. Japanese draws the lines differently, so learners who translate "sad" one-to-one end up saying 悲かなしい in places where a native speaker would say 寂さびしい. This article sorts the words by what caused the feeling, which is the question Japanese actually cares about.

The basics

How do you say "sad" in Japanese?

悲かなしい (かなしい) is the default "sad" — the feeling that comes from a loss, bad news, or a painful event. It points at something that happened.

悲かなしいニュースを聞ききました。 — I heard sad news. (polite, neutral) あの映画えいがのラストは本当ほんとうに悲かなしかった。 — The ending of that movie was really sad. (casual-polite, past tense)

Notice the past tense 悲かなしかった: like all い-adjectives, 悲かなしい becomes 悲かなしかった, not 悲かなしいだった. If you are unsure about that pattern, our guide to Japanese words for happy covers the same adjective family from the other side.

How do you say "lonely" in Japanese?

寂さびしい (さびしい, often said さみしい) means lonely, and it also covers the feeling of missing someone. Both readings are equally standard; さみしい is very common in speech.

一人ひとりで食たべるのは寂さびしい。 — Eating alone is lonely. (casual) 友ともだちが引っ越ひっこして、寂さびしくなった。 — My friend moved away, and it's become lonely. (casual, past)

Here nothing bad happened. Something is simply absent. That is the whole difference: 悲かなしい needs an event, 寂さびしい needs a gap.

Which one should you pick?

Ask "what caused this?"

  • An event, a loss, a hurt → 悲かなしい
  • A person, a voice, a lively place that isn't there → 寂さびしい

ペットが死しんで悲かなしい。 — I'm sad because my pet died. (an event) ペットがいなくて寂さびしい。 — I'm lonely without my pet. (an absence)

The two sentences are only one word apart, yet they describe different moments: the day it happened versus every quiet evening afterwards.

How do the main words compare?

Word Reading What causes it Closest English
悲かなしい かなしい An event or loss sad
寂さびしい さびしい / さみしい An absence, being alone lonely, I miss you
切せつない せつない Longing, love, bittersweet scenes heart-aching, bittersweet
落ち込おちこむ おちこむ Failure or a bad turn feel down, get depressed
へこむ へこむ A blow to your confidence feel dented, feel low
泣なける なける Something moving it makes you cry (a compliment)

Beyond the basics

What does 切せつない mean, and why is it everywhere in anime reviews?

切せつない is a tight, aching feeling in the chest — usually love, longing, or a beautiful scene that hurts a little. It is not quite sad and not quite lonely. It is what you feel when two characters finally understand each other one episode too late.

このシーン、切せつない。 — This scene is so heart-aching. (casual, reacting to anime) 切せつない恋こいの歌うたが好すき。 — I like songs about bittersweet love. (casual)

Because 切せつない mixes sadness with warmth, English usually needs a phrase: "bittersweet," "it hurts in a good way," "my heart aches." Learners hear it constantly in fan reviews and hit songs, and it is the single most useful word to add after 悲かなしい and 寂さびしい.

Is 寂さびしい the same as "I miss you"?

Often, yes: Japanese uses 寂さびしい where English says "miss." There is no verb that does the same job in everyday speech, so you say I'm lonely instead.

会あえなくて寂さびしい。 — I miss you. (literally: I'm lonely because we can't meet; casual) みんなに会あえなくなるのは寂さびしいな。 — I'll miss everyone. (casual, said as a group is about to part) 寂さびしくなるね。 — It's going to be lonely without you. (said when someone is leaving; warm, natural farewell)

寂さびしくなるね is what colleagues and classmates say at a goodbye. It is affectionate and soft, and it works better than any literal "I will miss you" translation. If you want the romantic side of feeling for someone, see I love you in Japanese.

How do you talk about someone else's feelings?

Japanese hesitates to state another person's inner feelings as fact, so adjectives like 寂さびしい or 悲かなしい change form when the subject is a third person. With 寂さびしい you add がる: 寂さびしがる. For 悲かなしい the usual verb is 悲かなしむ.

子こどもが寂さびしがっている。 — The child seems lonely. (casual; がっている = "is showing signs of") みんな、彼かれの死しを悲かなしんだ。 — Everyone grieved his death. (plain, past) 彼女かのじょ、悲かなしそうだった。 — She looked sad. (casual, based on appearance)

Saying 彼かれは寂さびしい as a bare statement sounds odd, because you cannot see inside him. Use がる, そう, or 〜みたい to show that you are reading signs, not mind-reading.

What about 落ち込おちこむ and へこむ?

落ち込おちこむ means feeling low after something goes wrong, and へこむ is its more casual, dented-pride cousin. They describe a mood, not a cause like 悲かなしい does. They are worth their own article, so see へこむ and feeling down.

テストが悪わるくて落ち込おちこんでる。 — I'm down because my test went badly. (casual, spoken)

What is 泣なける — is it really sad?

泣なける is praise: it means "a story that makes you cry" in a moving, cathartic way. In anime and movie reviews, ★★★★★ and 泣なける go together.

この映画えいが、めっちゃ泣なける。 — This movie really makes you cry. (casual, enthusiastic recommendation)

Compare 悲かなしい映画えいが (a sad movie, maybe unpleasant) with 泣なける映画えいが (a movie that gets you crying in a way you enjoy). Happy tears are 嬉うれし泣なき, as in 合格ごうかくして、嬉うれし泣なきした ("I cried tears of joy when I passed"), and cry in Japanese sets it beside 号泣ごうきゅう, bawling.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 悲かなしい when you mean "lonely." 一人ひとりで悲かなしい sounds like something bad happened to you. For being alone, say 寂さびしい.
  • Using 寂さびしい for a breakup's shock. The moment of being dumped is 悲かなしい; the empty weeks afterwards are 寂さびしい.
  • Saying 彼かれは悲かなしい about a third person. Use 悲かなしそう, 悲かなしんでいる, or 寂さびしがっている.
  • Writing 悲かなしいだった. Past tense is 悲かなしかった; polite past is 悲かなしかったです.
  • Overusing 切せつない. It suits love, longing, and bittersweet scenes; it is odd for ordinary bad news.

FAQ

Is さびしい or さみしい correct? Both. さみしい is a very common spoken variant. Same meaning, and both are written 寂さびしい.

Can 寂さびしい ever be used for a place? Yes. 寂さびしい町まち is a deserted, lifeless town. The feeling of "lonely" extends to a scene, not only a person.

Can I say 悲かなしい about my own sad feelings to a coworker? You can, but it sounds heavy. Japanese people tend to soften it — ちょっと落ち込おちこんでます is the more usual way to say you're low at work.

Is 切せつない the same as 悲かなしい? No. 切せつない usually includes some love, longing, or beauty. A tragedy with no warmth is 悲かなしい; a farewell in the rain with one look back is 切せつない.

How do I say "I'm lonely" to a friend without sounding dramatic? 寂さびしいな or 寂さびしいよ, casual, with a soft ending. The particle な turns it into a murmur.

Practice

Try each one before opening the answer. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair — same situation, different cause.

1. Your friend is moving away and you want to say "I'll miss you." Which adjective do you use?

Show answer

寂さびしい — 寂さびしくなるね or 会あえなくて寂さびしい. Japanese uses "lonely" where English uses "miss."

2. Which is the natural way to describe hearing about a plane crash on the news?

Show answer

悲かなしいニュース — it is an event, so 悲かなしい fits, not 寂さびしい.

3. Your pet died today. Choose 悲かなしい or 寂さびしい: ペットが死しんで__。

Show answer

悲かなしい — the cause is an event (the death).

4. A month later, the house feels quiet without your pet. Choose 悲かなしい or 寂さびしい: ペットがいなくて__。

Show answer

寂さびしい — the cause is now an absence. Same pet, different cause, different word.

5. After a beautiful anime scene where a confession comes too late, which word describes the feeling?

Show answer

切せつない — bittersweet longing, not plain sadness.

6. How do you say "The child seems lonely"?

Show answer

子こどもが寂さびしがっている — がる marks a third person whose feelings you can only read from signs.

7. Turn 悲かなしい into the past tense.

Show answer

悲かなしかった — い-adjectives change い to かった. 悲かなしいだった is wrong.

8. A friend says 「この映画えいが、泣なける!」 Is the friend complaining?

Show answer

No, it is praise. 泣なける means the movie moves you to tears in a good way.

9. You failed an exam and feel low. Which verb is more natural than 悲かなしい?

Show answer

落ち込おちこむ — you are describing a mood after a setback, not a sad event.

10. Why is 彼かれは寂さびしい odd as a plain statement?

Show answer

You cannot know another person's inner feeling directly. Use 寂さびしがっている, 寂さびしそう, or 寂さびしいみたい instead.

With a teacher in a trial lesson, describe being sad about an event with 悲かなしい, lonely for someone with 寂さびしい, and the ache in between with 切せつない.
