Cry in Japanese: 泣なく (なく), 涙なみだ (なみだ), 泣なき虫むし, and why a movie can be 泣なける

"To cry" in Japanese is 泣なく (なく, naku), and tears are 涙なみだ (なみだ, namida). A crybaby is a 泣なき虫むし (なきむし), crying from happiness is 嬉うれし泣なき (うれしなき), and a movie that makes you cry is 泣なける (なける), "tear-jerking".

Japanese has a surprisingly rich vocabulary for crying: how hard, why, and what it sounds like. It also has a famous homophone, 鳴なく, for the sounds animals make. Anime and dramas are full of crying scenes, so these words come up constantly. This post covers the everyday verb, the nouns, the sounds, and the compliment hidden in 泣なける.

How do you say "cry" in Japanese?

What is 泣なく?

泣なく (なく) is "to cry", shedding tears from sadness, pain or emotion.

赤あかちゃんが泣ないている。 — The baby is crying. (neutral) 映画えいがを見みて泣ないた。 — I cried watching the movie. (casual)

泣なく is a regular う-verb: 泣ないた (cried), 泣なかない (doesn't cry), 泣ないて (cry and...). 泣なかないで, "don't cry", is one of the most common lines in anime and dramas.

What is 涙なみだ?

涙なみだ (なみだ) is "tears", and 涙なみだが出でる is "tears come out".

涙なみだが出でるほど笑わらった。 — I laughed until I cried. (casual) 彼女かのじょの目めに涙なみだが浮うかんだ。 — Tears welled up in her eyes. (neutral, a little literary)

涙なみだ appears in both sad and happy moments. 涙なみだが止とまらない, "the tears won't stop", is a common way to describe being deeply moved. A person who is easily moved to tears is 涙なみだもろい (なみだもろい): 年としを取とって涙なみだもろくなった, "I've gotten more easily moved to tears with age", is something many people say with a smile.

What is 泣なき虫むし?

泣なき虫むし (なきむし), "crying bug", is a crybaby, someone who cries easily.

私わたしは子こどもの頃ころ、泣なき虫むしだった。 — I was a crybaby as a child. (casual)

It is affectionate rather than harsh, especially about children or about yourself. In anime, the 泣なき虫むし character often grows into a strong one later in the story.

Beyond the basics

What sounds describe crying?

Japanese uses onomatopoeia to show how someone cries.

Sound Feel
うるうる eyes welling up, about to cry
しくしく quiet sobbing
わんわん loud wailing, like a child
ぽろぽろ tears falling drop by drop

感動かんどうして、目めがうるうるした。 — I was so moved my eyes teared up. (casual) 子こどもがわんわん泣ないている。 — The child is wailing. (casual)

うるうる is a favorite word in reviews of emotional anime and movies. Our post on onomatopoeia covers more.

What are 号泣ごうきゅう and 嬉うれし泣なき?

号泣ごうきゅう (ごうきゅう) is bawling, crying your heart out; 嬉うれし泣なき (うれしなき) is crying from happiness.

最終回さいしゅうかいで号泣ごうきゅうした。 — I bawled at the final episode. (casual, fan talk) 合格ごうかくして、嬉うれし泣なきした。 — I cried tears of joy when I passed. (casual)

号泣ごうきゅう is extremely common in reviews and social media, often with a bit of exaggeration. 嬉うれし泣なき captures happy tears at weddings, graduations and reunions.

What does 泣なける mean?

泣なける (なける), "can make you cry", is a compliment for a moving story, song or movie.

この映画えいが、めっちゃ泣なける。 — This movie is a real tear-jerker. (casual, praise)

It is the potential form of 泣なく used as a recommendation. A 泣なけるアニメ is a moving anime, and people search for that phrase when they want a good cry. Our post on the potential form explains the grammar.

Why is 鳴なく also なく?

鳴なく (なく) is the cry or call of an animal: a cat meowing, a bird singing, a cicada buzzing.

猫ねこがニャーと鳴ないた。 — The cat meowed. (neutral) 蝉せみが鳴ないている。 — The cicadas are buzzing. (neutral, a summer sound)

泣なく is for tears; 鳴なく is for animal sounds. They sound identical, so the kanji does the work. Our post on cat in Japanese has more on ニャー.

What does 泣なきっ面めんに蜂はち mean?

泣なきっ面めんに蜂はち (なきっつらにはち), "a bee sting on a crying face", means bad luck on top of bad luck.

財布さいふをなくした上うえに、雨あめに降ふられた。泣なきっ面めんに蜂はちだ。 — I lost my wallet and then got caught in the rain. When it rains, it pours. (casual)

It is the Japanese "when it rains, it pours". Our post on Japanese proverbs has more.

How do you comfort someone who is crying?

Short, gentle questions work best. Japanese comfort is often quiet rather than wordy.

大丈夫だいじょうぶ?何なにかあった? — Are you okay? Did something happen? (casual, gentle) ゆっくりでいいよ。 — Take your time. (casual, letting them talk when ready)

大丈夫だいじょうぶ? is the natural first word, and our post on 大丈夫だいじょうぶ explains its many uses. Offering a tissue or a handkerchief, ハンカチ使つかって, "use my handkerchief", is a small, kind gesture. Many people prefer not to cry in front of others, so simply staying nearby, そばにいるよ, "I'm right here", can mean more than advice.

How do characters talk about crying in anime?

Two lines show up again and again.

泣ないてない! — I'm not crying! (casual, a stubborn character who clearly is) 泣ないてもいいんだよ。 — It's okay to cry. (casual, a gentle comforting line)

泣ないてない is the tsundere classic: the character insists they are not crying while tears roll down. 泣ないてもいいんだよ is the tender opposite, a line that often makes the audience cry too.

Common mistakes

  • Using 泣なく for animal sounds. Animals 鳴なく.
  • Thinking 泣なける is negative. It is praise for a moving story.
  • Saying 涙なみだする in casual speech. It exists but sounds literary. Use 泣なく.
  • Reading 号泣ごうきゅう as ごうなき. It is ごうきゅう.
  • Using 泣なき虫むし as a harsh insult. It is usually gentle teasing.
