Progress in Japanese: 上達じょうたつ, 進歩しんぽ and 進捗しんちょく are three different words

"Progress" in Japanese depends on what is progressing. A skill getting better — your Japanese, your guitar playing — is 上達じょうたつ (じょうたつ). Technology, science or society moving forward is 進歩しんぽ (しんぽ). A task or project moving toward completion is 進捗しんちょく (しんちょく). "My Japanese has made progress" is 日本語にほんごが上達じょうたつした, not 日本語にほんごが進歩しんぽした.

This is one of those words where English uses one noun and Japanese uses three, and learners who pick the wrong one sound like a science documentary talking about their own homework.

The basics

What is 上達じょうたつ?

上達じょうたつ is improvement in a skill: languages, sports, instruments, cooking, drawing. 上うえ (up) + 達たつ (reach), so it is "reaching higher." It is the word every learner wants to hear about themselves.

日本語にほんごがだいぶ上達じょうたつしましたね。 — Your Japanese has improved a lot. (polite, a compliment) 毎日まいにち練習れんしゅうしたら、ギターが上達じょうたつした。 — I practised every day and my guitar playing improved. (casual)

If a Japanese person compliments your progress, this is almost always the word they use. 上達じょうたつが早はやい means "you're improving fast."

What is 進歩しんぽ?

進歩しんぽ is advancement: technology, medicine, science, society, or humanity. 進すすむ (advance) + 歩ほ (step). It is used for big, steady forward movement, often over years.

医学いがくの進歩しんぽで、多おおくの病気びょうきが治なおるようになった。 — Thanks to medical progress, many diseases can now be cured. (neutral, news or an essay) AIの進歩しんぽは本当ほんとうに速はやい。 — The progress of AI is really fast. (neutral)

進歩しんぽ can be used about a person too, but it sounds like a report or an evaluation: 前回ぜんかいより進歩しんぽが見みられる, "progress can be seen since last time." That is teacher-report language.

What is 進捗しんちょく?

進捗しんちょく is the progress of a task: how far along a project, assignment or piece of work is. It is office Japanese, and it appears in almost every status meeting.

進捗しんちょくはいかがですか。 — How is the progress? (polite, a manager checking in) 今日きょうのうちに進捗しんちょくを報告ほうこくします。 — I'll report on the progress by the end of today. (polite, at work)

進捗しんちょく is so common at work that it has become a joke word online: 進捗しんちょくどうですか? ("how's the progress?") is what anxious deadline-chasers say to each other. For more workplace words, see business Japanese vocabulary.

Beyond the basics

What about 伸のびる?

伸のびる (のびる) means "to stretch" or "to grow," and it is the casual way to say a skill or number went up.

この一年いちねんで、日本語にほんごがすごく伸のびたね。 — Your Japanese has really grown this year. (casual, a friend or teacher) 売り上うりあげが伸のびた。 — Sales went up. (neutral, business)

伸のびしろ (のびしろ), "room to grow," is a nice word to know: 伸のびしろがある means "has a lot of potential." It is a common compliment for beginners.

How is 上達じょうたつする different from 上手じょうずになる?

Both mean "get better at something," and in many sentences you can use either. The difference is register and focus. 上手じょうずになる (じょうずになる) is plain, everyday and a little childlike; 上達じょうたつする sounds more adult and is the word in compliments, reviews and teacher feedback.

料理りょうりが上手じょうずになったね。 — You've gotten good at cooking. (casual, warm) 料理りょうりの腕うでが上達じょうたつしましたね。 — Your cooking skills have really improved. (polite, a bit more formal)

One more difference: 上手じょうず describes where you are now, so 上手じょうずになった can mean you've reached "good." 上達じょうたつ is about the movement, so you can 上達じょうたつ while still being a beginner. For more on 上手じょうず and its opposites, see good at and bad at in Japanese.

What about 成長せいちょう?

成長せいちょう (せいちょう) is growth: a child growing up, a person maturing, a company expanding. For a person, it is about becoming a better or more mature human, not just better at a skill.

この仕事しごとを通とおして、すごく成長せいちょうできた。 — I grew a lot through this job. (neutral, looking back)

The difference: 上達じょうたつ is your skill, 成長せいちょう is you.

How do you say "no progress"?

The natural phrases depend on the word:

  • なかなか上達じょうたつしない — my skill just won't improve
  • 全然ぜんぜん進すすまない — it's not moving at all (a task, homework, a book you're reading)
  • 進捗しんちょくなし — no progress (work report, a bit dry)

宿題しゅくだいが全然ぜんぜん進すすまない。 — My homework isn't going anywhere. (casual)

進すすむ (すすむ) is the everyday verb for a task moving forward. 進すすんでる? ("is it going OK?") is how a friend asks about your project.

How does anime talk about progress?

Sports and training anime love 上達じょうたつ and 成長せいちょう. A coach's classic line is 上達じょうたつしたな, "you've improved," said quietly at a key moment. Villains, meanwhile, talk about 進化しんか (しんか, evolution) when they power up — a word that sounds dramatic in daily life. Saying 日本語にほんごが進化しんかした is a joke: "my Japanese has evolved!"

How do you talk about your own study progress?

When someone asks how your Japanese is going, these are natural answers:

少すこしずつ上達じょうたつしていると思おもいます。 — I think I'm improving little by little. (polite, modest) 最近さいきん、伸び悩のびなやんでいます。 — I've hit a plateau lately. (polite)

伸のび悩なやむ (のびなやむ), "to struggle to grow," is exactly the word for a plateau, and it is the one learners often don't know they need. For advice on getting past it, see how to study Japanese by yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Using 進歩しんぽ for your own language skill. 日本語にほんごが進歩しんぽした sounds like a lab report. Use 上達じょうたつした or 伸のびた.
  • Using 進捗しんちょく for a skill. 日本語にほんごの進捗しんちょく sounds like your Japanese is a project with a deadline. Only tasks have 進捗しんちょく.
  • Using 上達じょうたつ for technology. 技術ぎじゅつが上達じょうたつした is odd for technology in general; that is 進歩しんぽ. For a person's technique, 上達じょうたつ is fine.
  • Reading 進捗しんちょく as しんぽ. It is しんちょく. 捗ちょく is a rare kanji, and 進歩しんぽ (しんぽ) is a different word.
  • Using 成長せいちょう for a skill. 日本語にほんごが成長せいちょうした sounds like your Japanese is a child. Use 上達じょうたつ.

Which word should you use?

Word Reading What is progressing Example
上達じょうたつ じょうたつ A skill 日本語にほんごが上達じょうたつした
進歩しんぽ しんぽ Technology, science, society 医学いがくの進歩しんぽ
進捗しんちょく しんちょく A task or project 進捗しんちょくはいかがですか
伸のびる のびる A skill or number, casual 日本語にほんごが伸のびた
成長せいちょう せいちょう A person, child or company 仕事しごとで成長せいちょうした
進すすむ すすむ Any task, casual 宿題しゅくだいが進すすまない

Which of 上達じょうたつ, 進歩しんぽ and 進捗しんちょく fits depends on what is progressing, so in a trial lesson, talk about your own Japanese, a task at work and a technology you follow, and pick the right word for each.

FAQ

Is 上達じょうたつ only for adults? No. Children 上達じょうたつ at piano or sports too. The word is about the skill, not the person's age.

How do you say "make progress" as a verb? It depends: 上達じょうたつする for a skill, 進歩しんぽする for technology, 進すすむ for a task. There is no single "make progress" verb.

Is 進捗しんちょく formal? It is business Japanese, so it sounds a bit stiff in casual talk. With friends, どう、進すすんでる? is more natural.

What is 向上こうじょう? 向上こうじょう (こうじょう) is "improvement" in a formal sense: 品質ひんしつの向上こうじょう (quality improvement), 生活せいかつの向上こうじょう (improved living standards). It is common in company goals and news.

How do I say "I'm making slow progress"? 少すこしずつ上達じょうたつしています for a skill, or 少すこしずつ進すすんでいます for a task.

Is 進化しんか ever used seriously about a person? In casual speech it is usually a joke. In sports commentary, 進化しんかした is used seriously for an athlete who clearly reached a new level.
