Mikata meaning: how do you say "ally" and "enemy" in Japanese?

味方みかた(みかた)means "ally" — someone who is on your side — and its opposite is 敵てき(てき), "enemy."

Anime made both words famous: the hero is the 正義せいぎの味方みかた, the villain is the 敵てきキャラ. But the words are not only for battles. Japanese uses 味方みかた for a parent who backs a child in an argument, for a friend who defends you in a meeting, and even for time itself. This article covers the meaning, the phrase 味方みかたをする, the near-synonyms that learners mix up, and the lines you will hear in anime.

The basics

What does 味方みかた mean in Japanese?

味方みかた(みかた)is a person or group on your side, the way "ally" is in English. It does not need a war. What matters is direction: this person is standing with me, not against me.

俺おれはお前まえの味方みかただ。 — I'm on your side. (casual, male speech, very common in anime) 困こまったときは、私わたしが味方みかたになります。 — When you're in trouble, I'll be on your side. (polite, warm) この町まちに、味方みかたは一人ひとりもいない。 — There isn't a single ally in this town. (neutral, dramatic)

Notice the pattern 〜の味方みかただ and 〜の味方みかたになる. The first says "I am your ally." The second says "I will become your ally."

What does 敵てき mean, and how is it read?

敵てき(てき)means "enemy" or "opponent." It covers a real enemy in a story, a rival in a game, and a person who is working against you.

敵てきが来くるぞ! — The enemy is coming! (casual, action scene; the story that follows is often about 生き残いきのこる, see survive in Japanese) 敵てきか味方みかたか、まだわからない。 — I can't tell yet whether they're friend or foe. (neutral)

The pair 敵てきか味方みかたか is a set phrase. English says "friend or foe"; Japanese says "enemy or ally."

Can 味方みかた be used for things, not only people?

Yes. 味方みかた works as a metaphor for anything that helps you. The most famous version is 時間じかんは私わたしたちの味方みかただ.

時間じかんは私わたしたちの味方みかただ。 — Time is on our side. (neutral, used when waiting will help you) 天気てんきは味方みかたしてくれなかった。 — The weather didn't help us. (casual, literally "didn't take our side")

How do you say "take someone's side"?

〜の味方みかたをする means "to take someone's side." It is the phrase you need for arguments. The particle is の, not を.

お母かあさんは、いつも弟おとうとの味方みかたをする。 — Mom always takes my little brother's side. (casual, family complaint) どうして彼かれの味方みかたをするの? — Why are you taking his side? (casual, annoyed)

The two forms feel different. 味方みかただ describes a state ("I am on your side"). 味方みかたをする describes an action ("I side with you right now, in this argument").

Beyond the basics

What is the opposite of 味方みかたをする?

敵てきに回まわす(てきにまわす)means "to make an enemy of someone" — to turn a person against you. It comes up in both anime and real life.

あいつを敵てきに回まわしたくない。 — I don't want to make an enemy of that guy. (casual, a warning) 上司じょうしを敵てきに回まわすのは、よくないよ。 — It's not smart to make an enemy of your boss. (casual advice)

The verb 回まわす (to turn) is the same idea as "turning" in English: you turn someone into your enemy. If the opposition is against rules or authority rather than a person, the word is different; see rebel in Japanese: 反抗はんこう and 反逆はんぎゃく. The negative 敵てきに回まわしたくない is the version you will hear most often.

How is 味方みかた different from 肩かたを持もつ, ひいきする, 応援おうえんする, and 仲間なかま?

These five words all sound close in English. They are not the same. The table shows the main difference.

Word Core meaning Feel
味方みかた(みかた) An ally; being on someone's side Neutral to warm. Can be heroic.
味方みかたをする Take someone's side Neutral. Used in arguments.
肩かたを持もつ(かたをもつ) Side with someone, often unfairly Slightly critical. Suggests bias.
ひいきする Show favoritism Negative. The person is being unfair.
応援おうえんする(おうえんする) Support, cheer for Positive. No opponent needed.
仲間なかま(なかま) Comrade, one of us Warm. About belonging, not about a fight.

The important split is this: 味方みかたをする is neutral, but 肩かたを持もつ often carries a small criticism. 親おやは弟おとうとの肩かたを持もつ sounds like "the parent is favoring my brother, and it isn't fair." 親おやは弟おとうとの味方みかたをする sounds more like a plain description of who took whose side.

And 仲間なかま is a different axis. A 仲間なかま is someone who belongs to your group. A 味方みかた is someone who supports you in a conflict. A friend can be your 仲間なかま without ever having to be your 味方みかた in a specific argument. The same belonging feeling is behind the senpai and kouhai relationship.

What phrases will you hear in anime?

Here are the ones that appear over and over.

正義せいぎの味方みかた — an ally of justice (the classic hero title; you hear it in hero shows and in jokes about heroes) 敵てきキャラ — an enemy character, a villain figure (casual, used by fans) 宿敵しゅくてき(しゅくてき) — a sworn enemy, a long-time nemesis (dramatic, rivals with a history) ライバル — a rival (friendly or serious; someone you compete with but do not hate) たとえ世界せかいが敵てきになっても、俺おれはお前まえの味方みかただ。 — Even if the whole world becomes your enemy, I'm on your side. (dramatic, a classic hero line)

Notice how ライバル and 敵てき differ. A ライバル pushes you to grow. A 敵てき is someone you must stop. Anime often turns a 敵てき into a ライバル later, and that change is a whole story arc. The hero who says the line above is usually acting out of courage (勇気ゆうき).

Why is 敵てき sometimes read かたき?

敵てき has a second reading, かたき, and it means someone you want revenge on. You see it in words like 仇あだ(かたき)and 敵討かたきうちち(かたきうち, "avenging an enemy").

父ちちの敵かなを討うつ。 — I will avenge my father. (dramatic, historical or fantasy setting; here 敵てき is read かたき)

Learn this as a pair: てき is the enemy in a fight, かたき is the enemy you owe a debt to. In modern daily speech you will almost always hear てき.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up 味方みかた and 見方みかた. They are both read みかた. 味方みかた is "ally." 見方みかた is "way of looking at something, viewpoint." 彼かれの見方みかたは面白おもしろい is "his viewpoint is interesting." In speech you tell them apart from context. In writing the kanji do the work, so learn both.
  • Using を after 味方みかた in "take someone's side." The correct form is 弟おとうとの味方みかたをする, with の. 弟おとうとを味方みかたをする is wrong, because 弟おとうと is the person whose side you take, not the thing being done.
  • Calling every friend a 味方みかた. 友達ともだち means "friend" and says nothing about a conflict. If you say 友達ともだちは私わたしの味方みかただ, you are saying "my friend supports me in this fight." That is a stronger claim than "we're friends."
  • Using 肩かたを持もつ as praise. 肩かたを持もつ hints at bias. If you want to say "I'm on your side" warmly, use 味方みかただ, not 肩かたを持もつ.
  • Thinking 敵てき is only for villains. In sports, games, and business, 敵てき and 敵てきに回まわす are normal words. Saying 敵てきに回まわしたくない about a coworker is common and not dramatic at all.

Practice

Build each answer before you open it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair on 味方みかたをする and 肩かたを持もつ. Questions 5 and 6 are a pair on 味方みかた and 見方みかた.

1. Say "I'm on your side" in casual male speech, the way an anime hero would.

Show answer

俺おれはお前まえの味方みかただ — 味方みかた plus だ states that the speaker is an ally. 俺おれ and お前まえ make it casual and male.

2. Say "Mom always takes my little brother's side." Which particle goes between 弟おとうと and 味方みかた?

Show answer

お母かあさんは、いつも弟おとうとの味方みかたをする — the particle is の, because 弟おとうと owns the "side" that is being taken.

3. A parent takes a child's side in a plain, neutral way. Which fits: 味方みかたをする or 肩かたを持もつ?

Show answer

味方みかたをする — it just describes who took whose side, with no judgment. This is the pair to question 4.

4. A parent takes a child's side, and the speaker thinks it is unfair. Which fits: 味方みかたをする or 肩かたを持もつ?

Show answer

肩かたを持もつ — it carries a small criticism, a sense of bias. That is the difference from question 3.

5. Which word means "ally": 味方みかた or 見方みかた?

Show answer

味方みかた — the 味あじ kanji plus 方ほう. It is the person on your side. This is the pair to question 6.

6. Which word means "viewpoint": 味方みかた or 見方みかた?

Show answer

見方みかた — the kanji 見み (to see) plus 方ほう (way). It means "way of looking at something." Same sound as 味方みかた, different meaning.

7. Say "I don't want to make an enemy of that guy."

Show answer

あいつを敵てきに回まわしたくない — 敵てきに回まわす is "to make an enemy of," and 〜たくない is "don't want to."

8. What does 敵てきか味方みかたか mean, and what English phrase is it close to?

Show answer

"Enemy or ally?" — it is the Japanese set phrase for "friend or foe."

9. How would you say "Time is on our side"? Use 味方みかた as a metaphor.

Show answer

時間じかんは私わたしたちの味方みかただ — 味方みかた is not limited to people. Anything that works in your favor can be your ally.

10. Someone says 友達ともだちは私わたしの味方みかただ. What does that claim, compared with 友達ともだちがいる?

Show answer

It says the friend supports you in a conflict. 友達ともだち only means "friend." 味方みかた adds "and they are on my side in this fight," which is a stronger claim.

In a trial lesson, tell me who is the 味方みかた and who is the 敵てき in a story you love, and use 味方みかたをする or 肩かたを持もつ for taking someone's side.
