Limited in Japanese: 限定げんてい, and the 以上いじょう/未満みまん on every sign

"Limited" in Japanese is 限定げんてい (げんてい) when something is restricted to a group, a time, or a quantity — and the little words 以上いじょう, 以下いか and 未満みまん are what tell you exactly where the limit sits.

Search for "limited in Japanese" and you get one word. In real life you meet it on posters, packaging, and event notices, and it almost always arrives with a number or a category attached. So this article covers the pair together: 限定げんてい for what kind of limit, and 以上いじょう/以下いか/未満みまん for where the line falls.

The basics

How do you say "limited" in Japanese?

Attach 限定げんてい to the thing that is limited: 期間限定きかんげんてい, 数量すうりょう限定げんてい, 地域限定ちいきげんてい, 会員かいいん限定げんてい. It works like a suffix meaning "only for" or "limited to."

  • 期間限定きかんげんてい (きかんげんてい) — limited time
  • 数量すうりょう限定げんてい (すうりょうげんてい) — limited quantity
  • 地域限定ちいきげんてい (ちいきげんてい) — limited to a region
  • 会員かいいん限定げんてい (かいいんげんてい) — members only
  • 女性じょせい限定げんてい (じょせいげんてい) — women only

期間限定きかんげんていのメニューです。 — This is a limited-time menu. (shop sign, polite) この商品しょうひんは数量すうりょう限定げんていです。 — This product is in limited quantity. (when it will run out) 会員かいいん限定げんていのセールがあります。 — There is a members-only sale. (polite)

The pattern is always [what is limited] + 限定げんてい. If you can name the category, you can build the phrase.

What is 限定版げんていばん, and why do anime fans know it?

限定版げんていばん (げんていばん) is a "limited edition," and 初回しょかい限定盤げんていばん (しょかいげんていばん) is the first-press limited release you see on anime discs and albums. The 初回しょかい means "first time," so the extra goodies come with the first production run only.

初回しょかい限定盤げんていばんには、特典とくてんがついています。 — The first-press limited edition comes with bonus items. (product description style) 限定版げんていばんは、もう売り切うりきれました。 — The limited edition has already sold out. (store staff)

Anime Blu-rays and music CDs use this wording constantly, so you may already have seen 限定げんてい without knowing it was a real word for "limited."

What do 以上いじょう, 以下いか, and 未満みまん mean?

以上いじょう and 以下いか include the number itself; 未満みまん does not. This is the part English speakers get wrong most often, because English "over 18" and "under 18" are vague about whether 18 itself is in.

  • 以上いじょう (いじょう) — this number and above
  • 以下いか (いか) — this number and below
  • 未満みまん (みまん) — below this number, not including it
  • 超ちょう (ちょう) — above this number, not including it (often written 超こえる / 〜を超こえる)

18歳さい以上いじょうの方ほうが対象たいしょうです。 — People aged 18 and above are eligible. (18-year-olds are in) 18歳さい未満みまんは入場にゅうじょうできません。 — People under 18 cannot enter. (18-year-olds are NOT excluded, because 17 and below is under) 1,000円えん以下いかの商品しょうひんだけ買かえます。 — You can only buy items of 1,000 yen or less. (1,000 yen exactly is fine)

What does "35歳さい以上いじょうの男性だんせい限定げんてい" mean?

It means "limited to men aged 35 and over" — 35-year-olds are included. This shape, [number]以上いじょうの[group]限定げんてい, is the pattern I teach for reading event notices.

35歳さい以上いじょうの男性だんせい限定げんていのイベントです。 — It is an event limited to men aged 35 and over. (the anchor pattern) 20歳さい未満みまんの方かたは参加さんかできません。 — People under 20 cannot take part. (20 exactly is allowed)

Read the number first, then the word after it, then the group. That order matches how the sentence is built.

Beyond the basics

Why is 以上いじょう a trap for English speakers?

In English, "over 30" and "30 and over" are casually swapped. Japanese separates them cleanly, and here is the table I use in lessons:

Word Meaning Includes the number? Example
以上いじょう this number and above Yes 30歳さい以上いじょう = 30, 31, 32...
以下いか this number and below Yes 30歳さい以下いか = ...29, 30
未満みまん below this number No 30歳さい未満みまん = ...28, 29
超ちょう above this number No 30歳さい超ちょう = 31, 32...

A memory trick: 以い means "starting from," so 以上いじょう and 以下いか both start counting from the number. 未み means "not yet," so 未満みまん means "not yet full" — you have not reached the number.

3人以上ひといじょうで予約よやくしてください。 — Please book with three or more people. (3 is fine) 3人にん未満みまんの場合ばあいは、お受うけできません。 — We cannot accept groups of fewer than three. (2 or fewer = no)

Is 以上いじょう also used as "that's all"?

Yes, and it catches people out. 以上いじょう by itself, at the end of a speech, a list, or a form, means "that is all." You hear it in announcements and in stiff, formal speaking.

以上いじょうです。 — That is all. (closing a presentation or report) 私わたしの話はなしは以上いじょうです。 — That is the end of what I have to say. (formal, ends a speech)

If you see 以上いじょう with no number, it is closing something, not counting.

What is the difference between 限定げんてい and のみ and だけ?

They all mean "only," but they sit at different levels: だけ is spoken, のみ is written, 限定げんてい is a label. のみ looks formal and appears on notices; だけ is what you say aloud.

関係者かんけいしゃのみ入はいれます。 — Only authorized people may enter. (sign, written style) これだけください。 — Just this, please. (speaking, casual shop talk) 女性じょせい限定げんていの席せきです。 — This is a women-only seat. (label for a category)

If you want the spoken だけ versus しか contrast in detail, see dake vs shika, which covers the negative-verb trap that だけ does not have.

What about "limited" meaning restricted or scarce?

That is a different flavour: 限かぎる (かぎる) is the verb, and 限かぎられた (かぎられた) is the adjective-like form. 限定げんてい is a noun-suffix label; 限かぎる is the grammar underneath it.

限かぎられた時間じかんで勉強べんきょうしています。 — I am studying in a limited amount of time. (scarce time, personal) お一人ひとり様さま1点てんに限かぎります。 — Limited to one per customer. (shop sign, polite)

For the full grammar of 限かぎる and 限かぎらない, see kagiru and kagiranai.

How do you read signs in an anime shop?

Think in this order: category + 限定げんてい, number + 以上いじょう/以下いか/未満みまん, then のみ or だけ. Most posters give you one of each.

購入こうにゅうは、お一人ひとり様さま2点てんまで。 — Purchase is up to two per person. (まで = up to, and includes two) 会員かいいん限定げんていの特典とくてんがつきます。 — Members-only bonus items are included. (loyalty benefits) 税込ぜいこみ3,000円えん以上いじょうで送料そうりょう無料むりょうです。 — Free shipping for orders of 3,000 yen or more. (the number itself is included)

If you are also getting ready for the phrases you hear at the counter, my Akihabara shop phrases guide pairs well with this one. And when the sign mentions "per person" or "one item," the counters in how many in Japanese fill in the numbers.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 未満みまん as "and under." 18歳さい未満みまん excludes 18. If you want to include 18, the sign would say 18歳さい以下いか.
  • Thinking 以上いじょう means "more than" (excluding the number). It includes the number. The exclusive "more than" is 超ちょう, or 〜より多おおい.
  • Using 限定げんてい like an adjective. It is a suffix on a noun. 限定げんていのイベント works, but you usually build it as 女性じょせい限定げんてい or 期間限定きかんげんてい directly.
  • Forgetting the の. 35歳さい以上いじょうの男性だんせい needs the の to link the age range to the noun.
  • Saying だけ on a formal notice. Written signs prefer のみ. だけ in a printed sentence can look casual.

Where limited words sit on the register scale

Word Register Typical place
限定げんてい Label Posters, packaging, event pages
のみ Written, formal Notices, rules, menus
だけ Spoken Everyday conversation
限かぎる Grammar 〜に限かぎる, 〜に限かぎらず
限かぎられた Descriptive Time, money, space

FAQ

What is the most natural way to say "limited edition" in Japanese? 限定版げんていばん or 限定盤げんていばん for music and discs, and 数量すうりょう限定げんてい for limited-quantity items. 初回しょかい限定盤げんていばん is the standard label for a first-press limited release.

Does 以上いじょう include the number? Yes. 20歳さい以上いじょう includes 20-year-olds. 未満みまん and 超ちょう do not include the number.

Is 未満みまん the same as 以下いか? No. 未満みまん excludes the number; 以下いか includes it. 20歳さい未満みまん stops at 19, while 20歳さい以下いか includes 20.

Can I use 限定げんてい with any noun? It works with many nouns that name a group, time, place, or quantity, such as 期間きかん, 数量すうりょう, 地域ちいき, 会員かいいん, 女性じょせい. It sounds natural when the noun is something people use to draw a boundary.

How do I say "limited time only"? 期間限定きかんげんてい on its own is enough. For a more specific date, 〜までの期間限定きかんげんてい works, as in 12月がつまでの期間限定きかんげんてい.

Practice

Build each answer before opening it. Questions 4 and 5 are a pair — the number is the same, only the word changes.

1. Say "limited time" as a two-part word.

Show answer

期間限定きかんげんてい — 期間きかん (period) plus 限定げんてい (limited to).

2. Which word marks the "limited edition" of an anime disc?

Show answer

限定版げんていばん (or 限定盤げんていばん for discs and CDs) — 初回しょかい限定盤げんていばん is the first-press limited release.

3. A poster says 35歳さい以上いじょうの男性だんせい限定げんてい. Is a 35-year-old man allowed?

Show answer

Yes — 以上いじょう includes the number, so 35 is in.

4. A sign says 18歳さい以上いじょう. Is an 18-year-old allowed?

Show answer

Yes — 以上いじょう includes the number. This is the pair to question 5.

5. A sign says 18歳さい未満みまんは入いれません. Is an 18-year-old allowed in?

Show answer

Yes — 未満みまん excludes the number, so only 17 and below are turned away. Same number as question 4, opposite word.

6. Which one includes the number, 以下いか or 未満みまん?

Show answer

以下いか — 以下いか includes it; 未満みまん does not.

7. What does 以上いじょうです mean at the end of a speech?

Show answer

"That is all." — 以上いじょう with no number closes a presentation or list.

8. Which is more natural on a printed notice, だけ or のみ?

Show answer

のみ — it is the written, formal "only." だけ is the spoken form.

9. Say "limited to one per customer" on a shop sign.

Show answer

お一人ひとり様さま1点てんに限かぎります — 限かぎる is the verb behind 限定げんてい, meaning "to be limited to."

10. Free shipping for orders of 3,000 yen or more. Which word do you use?

Show answer

3,000円えん以上いじょう — the number itself is included, so exactly 3,000 yen qualifies.
