In my opinion in Japanese: 個人的こじんてきには, 私わたしとしては, and why 私わたしの意見いけんでは sounds stiff

"In my opinion" in Japanese is most naturally 個人的こじんてきには (こじんてきには), "personally", followed by 〜と思おもいます: 個人的こじんてきには、こっちの方ほうがいいと思おもいます, "Personally, I think this one is better." The literal 私わたしの意見いけんでは exists, but it sounds like a debate or a formal report.

When English speakers give an opinion, "in my opinion" is a normal opener. When learners translate it word by word, they get 私わたしの意見いけんでは, which is correct but stiff, like reading from a prepared statement. Everyday Japanese prefers to soften opinions rather than announce them. This post shows the phrases people actually use, from casual to formal, and how to ask for someone else's opinion without sounding like a survey.

How do you say "in my opinion" naturally?

What does 個人的こじんてきには mean?

個人的こじんてきには (こじんてきには) means "personally" or "speaking for myself", and it is the most natural "in my opinion" in conversation. It signals that what follows is your own view, not a fact.

個人的こじんてきには、この映画えいがが一番好いちばんすきです。 — Personally, this movie is my favorite. (polite, sharing a taste) 個人的こじんてきには、もう少すこし安やすい方ほうがいいな。 — Personally, I'd prefer something a bit cheaper. (casual, a gentle preference)

The word comes from 個人こじん (こじん), "an individual", plus 的てき, which turns a noun into an adjective, like "-al" in "personal". With には, it marks your own standpoint.

Why do you need 〜と思おもいます?

Because Japanese opinions usually end with 〜と思おもいます, "I think", even after 個人的こじんてきには. The opener marks it as yours, and と思おもいます makes it sound like a view rather than a fact.

個人的こじんてきには、この方法ほうほうが一番いちばんいいと思おもいます。 — Personally, I think this method is the best. (polite, a clear but soft opinion)

The form before と matters: 一番いちばんいいと思おもいます, 必要ひつようだと思おもいます (with だ for nouns and な-adjectives). If that part still trips you up, our guide to 〜と思おもいます explains it step by step.

Is 私わたしの意見いけんでは wrong?

No, it is grammatical, but it sounds formal and argumentative. You will hear it in debates, panel discussions and written reports. In a café chat, it is a bit like saying "It is my considered opinion that..."

私わたしの意見いけんでは、この計画けいかくには問題もんだいがあります。 — In my opinion, this plan has a problem. (formal, a meeting or report)

If you are writing an essay or a presentation, 私わたしの意見いけんでは is fine. In conversation, use 個人的こじんてきには or just 〜と思おもいます on its own.

What other ways can you give an opinion?

What does 私わたしとしては mean?

私わたしとしては (わたしとしては) means "as for me" or "from my side", often hinting that others may see it differently. It is common at work, when you want to state your own position politely.

私わたしとしては、来週らいしゅうの方ほうが助たすかります。 — For my part, next week would be better. (polite, work scheduling)

〜としては means "in the position of", so it works with other roles too: 親おやとしては, "as a parent". For more on として, see について and として.

What does 私わたしから見みると mean?

私わたしから見みると (わたしからみると) means "from where I stand" or "the way I see it". It is useful when your view depends on your experience.

私わたしから見みると、彼かれはとても頑張がんばっていると思おもいます。 — From where I stand, I think he's working really hard. (polite, a supportive view)

What is あくまで個人的こじんてきな意見いけんですが?

あくまで個人的こじんてきな意見いけんですが means "This is only my personal opinion, but...", a cushion before saying something that others might not agree with. あくまで means "strictly" or "only". It is very common in meetings, reviews and Q&A sessions.

あくまで個人的こじんてきな意見いけんですが、デザインを変かえた方ほうがいいと思おもいます。 — This is only my personal opinion, but I think we should change the design. (polite, cushioning a suggestion)

A shorter version, 個人的こじんてきな意見いけんですが, works the same way. For more cushions like this, see how to disagree politely in Japanese.

How do you sound casual?

Among friends, drop the opener and just use 〜と思おもう, 〜かな, or 〜じゃない?

こっちの方ほうがいいと思おもう。 — I think this one is better. (casual, simple) それ、ちょっと高たかくない? — Isn't that a bit expensive? (casual, an opinion as a question)

The question form, 〜じゃない? or 〜くない?, is a very common way to give an opinion casually without sounding pushy.

Beyond the basics

How do you soften a strong opinion?

End with 〜んじゃないでしょうか, "isn't it the case that...?" It turns a statement into a gentle suggestion, and it is common in discussions.

もう少すこし時間じかんが必要ひつようなんじゃないでしょうか。 — Don't you think we need a little more time? (polite, a soft opinion)

The casual form is 〜んじゃない?: 時間じかんが足たりないんじゃない?, "Aren't we a bit short on time?"

How do you ask for someone's opinion?

Ask どう思おもいますか?, "What do you think?", or 〜についてどう思おもいますか?, "What do you think about ~?"

この案あんについてどう思おもいますか? — What do you think about this idea? (polite, a meeting) どう思おもう? — What do you think? (casual, friends)

A softer, more personal version is 〜さんはどうですか?, "How about you?", which invites the other person in without putting them on the spot.

What is the difference between 意見いけん and 考かんがえ?

意見いけん (いけん) is an opinion you state, often on an issue. 考かんがえ (かんがえ) is an idea or a way of thinking. 意見いけん is more formal and appears in meetings: 意見いけんを言いう, "to give one's opinion". 考かんがえ is broader: いい考かんがえですね, "That's a good idea."

何なにか意見いけんはありますか? — Does anyone have an opinion? (polite, a chairperson) いい考かんがえですね! — That's a good idea! (polite, praising)

For the verbs behind these nouns, see think in Japanese: 思おもう vs 考かんがえる.

Quick reference

Phrase Reading Feel Use it for

Common mistakes

  • Starting every opinion with 私わたしの意見いけんでは. It sounds stiff in conversation. Use 個人的こじんてきには.
  • Forgetting と思おもいます. Without it, an opinion can sound like a fact.
  • Saying 必要ひつようと思おもいます in speech. It appears in formal writing, but in conversation nouns and な-adjectives take だ: 必要ひつようだと思おもいます.
  • Putting 個人的こじんてきには in front of facts. 個人的こじんてきには、東京とうきょうは日本にほんの首都しゅとです sounds odd, because it is not an opinion.
  • Asking a superior 意見いけんを言いってください directly. It can sound commanding. ご意見いけんをいただけますか is more polite.

Practice

Try each answer before opening it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: giving an opinion in conversation versus in a report.

1. Say "Personally, this movie is my favorite."

Show answer

個人的こじんてきには、この映画えいがが一番好いちばんすきです。 — 個人的こじんてきには marks it as your own view.

2. Say "Personally, I think this method is the best."

Show answer

個人的こじんてきには、この方法ほうほうが一番いちばんいいと思おもいます。 — 〜と思おもいます turns it into a view rather than a fact.

3. In a café chat with a friend, give the opinion "I think this one is better" casually.

Show answer

こっちの方ほうがいいと思おもう。 — casual speech often needs no opener at all.

4. In a written report, open with "In my opinion, this plan has a problem."

Show answer

私わたしの意見いけんでは、この計画けいかくには問題もんだいがあります。 — formal and fine in writing. This is the pair to question 3.

5. Fix the form: 必要ひつようと思おもいます。

Show answer

必要ひつようだと思おもいます。 — in speech, な-adjectives and nouns take だ before と思おもう. (必要ひつようと思おもいます appears in formal writing.)

6. At work, say "For my part, next week would be better."

Show answer

私わたしとしては、来週らいしゅうの方ほうが助たすかります。 — 私わたしとしては states your position politely.

7. Cushion a suggestion: "This is only my personal opinion, but..."

Show answer

あくまで個人的こじんてきな意見いけんですが、… — あくまで means "strictly, only".

8. Soften: "Don't you think we need a little more time?"

Show answer

もう少すこし時間じかんが必要ひつようなんじゃないでしょうか。 — 〜んじゃないでしょうか turns a claim into a gentle suggestion.

9. In a meeting, ask "What do you think about this idea?"

Show answer

この案あんについてどう思おもいますか? — 〜についてどう思おもいますか is the standard way to ask.

10. Praise a friend's suggestion: "That's a good idea!"

Show answer

いい考かんがえですね! — 考かんがえ is an idea or way of thinking; 意見いけん sounds more formal.

Give a two-minute opinion on any topic in a trial lesson, starting with 個人的こじんてきには or 私わたしとしては, and skip the stiff 私わたしの意見いけんでは.
