Glasses in Japanese: めがね (眼鏡めがね), めがねをかける, and グラス vs ガラス

"Glasses" in Japanese is めがね, written 眼鏡めがね or メガネ. "To wear glasses" is めがねをかける, not 着きる. Sunglasses are サングラス, contact lenses are コンタクト, and reading glasses are 老眼ろうがん鏡かがみ (ろうがんきょう). A drinking glass is グラス or コップ, and glass as a material is ガラス.

Glasses come with a verb that surprises learners. Japanese has different "wear" verbs for different parts of the body, and glasses take かける, "to hang". Once you know that, talking about glasses is easy.

Common mistakes

  • Saying めがねを着きる. Use かける.
  • Saying コンタクトをかける. Use 入いれる.
  • Mixing up グラス and ガラス. グラス is a drinking glass. ガラス is the material.
  • Reading 眼鏡めがね as がんきょう. Alone, it is めがね.
  • Using 老眼ろうがん鏡かがみ for all glasses. It is only for reading glasses.
