Eye in Japanese: 目め (め), 目めがない, 目立めだつ, and 一目惚ひとめぼれ

"Eye" in Japanese is 目め (め). It is one of the busiest words in the language: 目めが覚さめる is "to wake up", 目立めだつ is "to stand out", and 目めがない, literally "to have no eyes", means "to be crazy about something". Love at first sight is 一目惚ひとめぼれ (ひとめぼれ).

Japanese uses 目め in dozens of everyday expressions, and many of them do not translate word for word. Someone with "no eyes" for sweets loves them; someone who "passes their eyes through" a document skims it. Learning a handful of these makes your Japanese sound instantly more natural. This post covers the basics, eyesight words, and the most useful 目め idioms.

How do you say "eye" in Japanese?

What does 目め mean?

目めが覚さめる marks the moment your eyes open, not the moment you get up, and sleep and wake up in Japanese shows why 目めが覚さめたけど、まだ起おきていない, "I woke up, but I haven't gotten up yet", makes sense.
