Ear in Japanese: 耳みみ (みみ), 初耳はつみみ, 耳みみが痛いたい, and 耳みみが遠とおい

"Ear" in Japanese is 耳みみ (みみ). It shows up in a lot of handy expressions: 初耳はつみみ (はつみみ), "first ear", means "that's news to me"; 耳みみが痛いたい, "my ears hurt", means criticism hits home; and 耳みみが遠とおい, "ears are far", means hard of hearing.

Ear expressions are perfect for conversation, because so much of talking is reacting to what you hear. 初耳はつみみ! is one of the most natural reactions in Japanese, and 耳みみが痛いたい is the honest admission when someone's advice hits a little too close. This post covers the body part, the hearing words, and the idioms you will use most.

How do you say "ear" in Japanese?

What does 耳みみ mean?

耳みみ (みみ) is an ear or ears.

耳みみが冷つめたい。 — My ears are cold. (casual) 耳みみにピアスをしている。 — She has pierced earrings in. (casual)

The kanji 耳みみ is a picture of an ear. It also appears in 聞きく (to listen) as a part. For listening words, see listen in Japanese. Its neighbor on the face, 目め, carries just as many idioms — see eye in Japanese.

What does 耳みみが遠とおい mean?

耳みみが遠とおい (みみがとおい), "ears are far", means hard of hearing. It is the gentle, common way to say it.

祖父そふは少すこし耳みみが遠とおい。 — My grandfather is a little hard of hearing. (casual)

What does 耳みみにする mean?

耳みみにする, "to put into the ear", means to happen to hear something, like a rumor.

その話はなし、どこかで耳みみにした。 — I heard that story somewhere. (casual)

What are the most useful 耳みみ idioms?

What does 初耳はつみみ mean?

初耳はつみみ (はつみみ), "first ear", means "That's the first I've heard of it" or "News to me". It is a common reaction.

えっ、それ初耳はつみみ! — What? That's news to me! (casual) 初耳はつみみです。 — This is the first I've heard of it. (polite)

What does 耳みみが痛いたい mean?

耳みみが痛いたい (みみがいたい), "my ears hurt", means "That hits home": criticism that is true and uncomfortable to hear.

その話はなしは耳みみが痛いたい。 — Ouch, that hits close to home. (casual)

Literally, it can also mean a real earache. Context decides. In the criticism sense, a graceful reply to the sting is 勉強べんきょうになります, "I learned something", one of the work reactions I see in Japanese suggests mixing in instead of repeating なるほど.

What does 耳みみを傾かたむける mean?

耳みみを傾かたむける (みみをかたむける), "to tilt your ear", means to listen carefully and sincerely.

お客様きゃくさまの声こえに耳みみを傾かたむける。 — We listen carefully to our customers. (polite, business)

Phrase Reading Meaning
耳みみ みみ ear
耳みみが遠とおい みみがとおい hard of hearing
耳みみにする みみにする to happen to hear
初耳はつみみ はつみみ news to me
耳みみが痛いたい みみがいたい it hits home
耳みみを傾かたむける みみをかたむける to listen carefully
耳打みみうち みみうち whisper in someone's ear
地獄耳じごくみみ じごくみみ sharp ears

Beyond the basics

What does 耳打みみうち mean?

耳打みみうち (みみうち) is whispering into someone's ear.

友ともだちが耳打みみうちしてきた。 — My friend whispered in my ear. (casual)

For keeping things quiet, the words are 秘密ひみつ (ひみつ) and 内緒ないしょ (ないしょ).

What does 耳みみを疑うたがう mean?

耳みみを疑うたがう (みみをうたがう), "to doubt your ears", means "I couldn't believe what I heard".

その値段ねだんに耳みみを疑うたがった。 — I couldn't believe my ears at that price. (casual)

What does 耳みみにたこができる mean?

耳みみにたこができる, "calluses grow on your ears", means you have heard something so many times you are sick of it.

その話はなしは耳みみにたこができるほど聞きいた。 — I've heard that story a million times. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 耳みみが悪わるい in front of an older person. 耳みみが遠とおい is gentler.
  • Reading 初耳はつみみ as しょみみ. It is はつみみ.
  • Taking 耳みみが痛いたい literally every time. It often means criticism hits home.
  • Saying 耳みみで聞きいた for "I happened to hear". Use 耳みみにした.
  • Thinking 耳みみにたこ is about the octopus. たこ here is a callus.
