Doll in Japanese: 人形にんぎょう (にんぎょう) plus ひな人形にんぎょう, だるま, こけし

Doll in Japanese is 人形にんぎょう (にんぎょう), literally "human shape". The dolls displayed for the Girls' Day festival are ひな人形にんぎょう (ひなにんぎょう), the round red good-luck doll is だるま, and the wooden doll with a round head is こけし. A stuffed animal is not 人形にんぎょう but ぬいぐるみ.

Japan has a deep doll culture, from festival dolls passed down in families to the anime figures sold in hobby shops. Knowing a handful of doll words lets you talk about holidays, souvenirs, and hobbies.

How do you say "doll" in Japanese?

What does 人形にんぎょう mean?

人形にんぎょう (にんぎょう) is a doll or figure shaped like a person.

子こどものころ、人形にんぎょうで遊あそんだ。 — I played with dolls as a child. (casual) この人形にんぎょうは手作てづくりだ。 — This doll is handmade. (casual)

Say 人形にんぎょう with the final う held, because one beat less gives 人魚にんぎょ, a mermaid, and 人魚にんぎょ and 人形にんぎょう counts the beats: three in 人魚にんぎょ, four in 人形にんぎょう.

Is a stuffed animal 人形にんぎょう?

No. A soft stuffed toy is ぬいぐるみ. 人形にんぎょう has a human shape and is usually firmer.

くまのぬいぐるみを抱だいて寝ねる。 — I sleep holding a teddy bear. (casual)

What are ひな人形にんぎょう?

ひな人形にんぎょう (ひなにんぎょう) are the dolls of the emperor, empress, and court displayed for ひな祭まつり (Girls' Day) on March 3. Families display them to wish for their daughters' health and happiness.

ひな祭まつりにひな人形にんぎょうを飾かざった。 — We displayed the hina dolls for Girls' Day. (casual)

There is a common belief that if you leave them out too long after the festival, the daughter will marry late, so many families put them away quickly.

What is だるま?

だるま is a round red doll with blank eyes. You fill in one eye when you make a wish and the other when it comes true.

合格ごうかくしたから、だるまに目めを入いれた。 — I passed, so I painted in the daruma's other eye. (casual)

For good-luck words, see lucky in Japanese.

What is こけし?

こけし is a simple wooden doll with a round head and no arms, a traditional craft from northern Japan.

お土産みやげにこけしを買かった。 — I bought a kokeshi doll as a souvenir. (casual)

Word Reading Meaning
人形にんぎょう にんぎょう doll
ぬいぐるみ ぬいぐるみ stuffed animal
ひな人形にんぎょう ひなにんぎょう Girls' Day dolls
ひな祭まつり ひなまつり Girls' Day
だるま だるま daruma wishing doll
こけし こけし wooden doll
フィギュア フィギュア figure (anime, game)
着きせ替かえ人形にんぎょう きせかえにんぎょう dress-up doll

What about anime figures?

Collectible figures are フィギュア. Collecting them is a big hobby.

好すきなキャラのフィギュアを集あつめている。 — I collect figures of my favorite characters. (casual)

What is 着きせ替かえ人形にんぎょう?

着きせ替かえ人形にんぎょう (きせかえにんぎょう) is a dress-up doll whose clothes you change.

What does 人形にんぎょうみたい mean?

人形にんぎょうみたい (like a doll) is a compliment for someone with a very pretty, delicate face.

赤あかちゃんが人形にんぎょうみたいにかわいい。 — The baby is as cute as a doll. (casual)

For more, see cute in Japanese.

Can 人形にんぎょう be negative?

Yes. 操あやつり人形にんぎょう (あやつりにんぎょう), a puppet on strings, describes someone controlled by others.

彼かれは社長しゃちょうの操あやつり人形にんぎょうだ。 — He's just the boss's puppet. (casual)

Are some dolls considered spooky in Japan?

Yes. Because dolls have a human shape, people feel they can hold feelings. Old dolls are not simply thrown away. Many shrines and temples hold a doll memorial called 人形にんぎょう供養くよう (にんぎょうくよう), where people bring dolls to be thanked and sent off properly. Doll ghost stories are also a classic summer topic.

Common mistakes

  • Calling a teddy bear 人形にんぎょう. Use ぬいぐるみ.
  • Reading 人形にんぎょう as ひとがた. That reading is for ritual paper figures; a doll is にんぎょう.
  • Calling an anime figure 人形にんぎょう. フィギュア is the usual word.
  • Leaving ひな人形にんぎょう out all spring. Many families put them away soon after March 3.
  • Using 操あやつり人形にんぎょう as a compliment. It is negative.
