Cat in Japanese: 猫ねこ (ねこ), ニャー, and the idioms only cat people get

"Cat" in Japanese is 猫ねこ (ねこ, neko). A kitten is 子猫こねこ (こねこ), a cat says ニャー (nyaa), and a person who cannot eat hot food is a 猫舌ねこじた (ねこじた), a "cat tongue".

The word itself takes ten seconds to learn. What makes cats worth a whole post is how deep they run in the language: plenty of idioms, a beckoning cat in every second shop window, a robot cat who is one of the most famous characters in the country, and an anime habit of ending sentences with にゃ. This post starts with the word and the counting, then goes into the phrases that will make a Japanese friend smile when you use them.

How do you say "cat" in Japanese?

What is the basic word?

猫ねこ (ねこ) is the everyday word for "cat". In hiragana it is ねこ, and in katakana ネコ.

猫ねこが好すきです。 — I like cats. (polite, the classic self-introduction line) うちには猫ねこが二匹にひきいます。 — We have two cats at home. (polite, talking about pets)

Notice the verb: animals take います, not あります. Cats are alive, so 猫ねこがいる. If that rule is new, our post on ある and いる explains it. You will see the katakana ネコ in science writing, zoo signs and some product names, but in daily writing the kanji or hiragana is normal.

What are the words for kitten, stray cat and other cats?

Add a word in front of 猫ねこ and its reading usually stays ねこ.

Word Reading Meaning
子猫こねこ こねこ kitten
野良猫のらねこ のらねこ stray cat
飼かい猫ねこ かいねこ pet cat
黒猫くろねこ くろねこ black cat
三毛猫みけねこ みけねこ calico cat (three colors)
猫ねこちゃん ねこちゃん kitty (affectionate)
にゃんこ にゃんこ kitty (cute, casual)

公園こうえんで野良猫のらねこを見みた。 — I saw a stray cat in the park. (casual, everyday) 子猫こねこがとてもかわいい。 — The kitten is so cute. (casual, the reaction everyone has)

The last two in the table are the cute register. 猫ねこちゃん is what people say when talking to or about a cat they like, and にゃんこ is even softer, used by cat lovers and in shop names.

How do you count cats?

Small animals like cats are counted with 匹ひき (ひき), and the sound changes: いっぴき, にひき, さんびき.

猫ねこが一匹いっぴきいます。 — There is one cat. (polite) 子猫こねこが三匹さんびき生うまれました。 — Three kittens were born. (polite, sharing news)

The pattern is いっぴき, にひき, さんびき, よんひき, ごひき, ろっぴき, ななひき, はっぴき, きゅうひき, じゅっぴき. It looks messy, but it is the same sound change as many counters. Our counters guide shows the full pattern.

Beyond the basics

What sound does a cat make in Japanese?

A cat says ニャー (nyaa) or にゃん (nyan), and purring is ゴロゴロ (gorogoro).

猫ねこがニャーと鳴ないた。 — The cat meowed. (neutral, 鳴なく is "to make an animal sound") 猫ねこがゴロゴロ言いっている。 — The cat is purring. (casual, 言いう is used for sounds)

ゴロゴロ also means rolling around lazily, and thunder rumbling, so context matters. Our post on onomatopoeia has many more sounds like these.

Why do anime characters say にゃ?

Ending sentences with にゃ or にゃん is the anime way of showing a cat character, or a character playing cute. It usually replaces だ or な, or just gets stuck on the end.

お腹おなかすいたにゃ。 — I'm hungry, nya. (anime cat speech, playful) よろしくにゃん! — Nice to meet you, nyan! (very cute, mascot or idol style)

This is a character voice, like a pirate's "arr" in English. It is fun to recognize, but it is not how anyone talks in real life, unless they are joking. Cat-eared characters, 猫耳ねこみみ (ねこみみ), often come with this speech style.

What does 猫舌ねこじた mean?

猫舌ねこじた (ねこじた), "cat tongue", means you cannot eat or drink anything hot. Cats are said to dislike hot food, and Japanese turned that image into a word for people.

私わたしは猫舌ねこじたなので、少すこし待まちます。 — I can't handle hot food, so I'll wait a little. (polite, at a ramen shop)

This is one of the most useful cat words in real life. In a country where ramen and tea are served very hot, someone will say 猫舌ねこじた at almost every meal.

What does 猫ねこをかぶる mean?

猫ねこをかぶる (ねこをかぶる), literally "to wear a cat", means to hide your true personality and act sweet and quiet.

彼女かのじょは初対面しょたいめんでは猫ねこをかぶっている。 — She acts all sweet and innocent when meeting people for the first time. (casual, a little teasing)

The image is putting a calm, harmless cat over your real self. In anime, this is the character who is polite at school and completely different at home.

Which other cat idioms are common?

Three more are worth knowing, because people really use them.

忙いそがしくて、猫ねこの手ても借かりたい。 — I'm so busy I'd even borrow a cat's paws. (casual, "I need all the help I can get") 彼かれに高たかいワインは猫ねこに小判こばんだ。 — Expensive wine is wasted on him. (casual, a little rude, "gold coins to a cat") 猫背ねこぜを直なおしたい。 — I want to fix my hunched posture. (casual, 猫背ねこぜ = "cat back")

猫ねこの手ても借かりたい is said every busy season in Japan. 猫ねこに小判こばん matches the English "pearls before swine": giving something valuable to someone who cannot appreciate it. 猫背ねこぜ is the everyday word for slouching, and you will hear it from parents and from posture ads alike. For more animal sayings, see Japanese proverbs.

Where do cats show up in Japanese culture?

In shop windows, on February 22, and in one very famous robot.

店みせの前まえに招き猫まねきねこがある。 — There's a beckoning cat in front of the shop. (neutral, describing) 2月がつ22日にちは猫ねこの日ひです。 — February 22 is Cat Day. (polite, a fun fact) ドラえもんは猫型ねこがたロボットです。 — Doraemon is a cat-type robot. (polite, a fact every child knows)

招き猫まねきねこ (まねきねこ), the cat with a raised paw, is said to invite customers and good luck. It is an ornament, not a living cat, so it takes ある. 猫ねこの日ひ falls on 2/22 because 2 can be read に, and にゃんにゃんにゃん sounds like a cat. And ドラえもん, despite having no ears, is officially a cat robot from the future. Studio Ghibli fans will also know ジジ, the black cat in 魔女まじょの宅急便たっきゅうびん (Kiki's Delivery Service).

Common mistakes

  • Using あります for cats. Cats are alive: 猫ねこがいます.
  • Counting cats with つ. 猫ねこが二ふたつ is wrong. Use 匹ひき: 二匹にひき (にひき).
  • Saying いちひき. One cat is いっぴき. Three is さんびき, not さんひき.
  • Using にゃ in real conversation. It is a cartoon voice. Fine as a joke, odd as normal speech.
  • Mixing up 猫舌ねこじた and 猫背ねこぜ. 舌した (した) is the tongue, so 猫舌ねこじた is about hot food. 背せ (せ) is the back, so 猫背ねこぜ is about posture.

FAQ

Is "neko" used in English? Among anime fans, yes. "Neko" in English fan speech often means a cat-eared character. In Japanese, 猫ねこ just means a real cat, and the cat-ear look is 猫耳ねこみみ.

What does にゃんにゃん mean? It is a cute cat sound, and it is also the pun behind 猫ねこの日ひ on February 22, since 2 can be read に.

Is 猫ねこ a common name? Not as a person's name. But pet cats are often given food names, like ミルク or モカ, or simple sounds like タマ, a classic old-fashioned cat name.

What is the difference between ねこ and ネコ? Same word. Hiragana and kanji are normal in daily writing. Katakana is common in science, zoo signs and some product names.

Is 猫ねこをかぶる an insult? It can be mild teasing among friends, but said seriously it suggests someone is fake, so be careful.

How do you say "I'm a cat person"? 猫派ねこはです (ねこはです). 派は means "faction" or "side", and the opposite is 犬派いぬは (いぬは), "dog person".
