Convenient in Japanese: 便利べんり (べんり), and why 都合つごう is a different word

"Convenient" in Japanese is 便利べんり (べんり), a な-adjective for things, tools and places that make life easier — but if you mean "convenient for my schedule," the word is 都合つごう (つごう), not 便利べんり.

English uses "convenient" for two different ideas. A phone app is convenient. A meeting time is convenient. Japanese splits these into two words, and mixing them up is the most common mistake with this word. This post covers 便利べんり and its opposite 不便ふべん, the schedule word 都合つごう, the shop name コンビニ, and the nearby words 楽らく and 使つかいやすい that learners often swap in by accident.

The basics

How do you say "convenient" in Japanese?

The word is 便利べんり (べんり). It describes something useful and easy to use: a tool, a service, a location, a feature.

このアプリはとても便利べんりです。 — This app is very convenient. (polite, neutral, the safe default) 駅えきに近ちかいので便利べんりです。 — It's convenient because it's close to the station. (polite, explaining a location)

The kanji tell the story: 便びん means "convenience" or "ease" and 利り means "benefit." Together: something that benefits you with little effort.

Is 便利べんり an い-adjective or a な-adjective?

It is a な-adjective, even though the reading ends in り, not い. You need な before a noun and で before another adjective or verb. If you are not sure what that means yet, read い-adjectives vs な-adjectives first.

便利べんりな道具どうぐですね。 — That's a handy tool, isn't it. (polite, 便利べんり + な + noun) この店みせは安やすくて便利べんりです。 — This shop is cheap and convenient. (polite, 便利べんり here ends the sentence) 便利べんりだ。 — So convenient. (casual, said to yourself or a friend)

Three forms cover most of what you will say: 便利べんりです (polite), 便利べんりだ (plain), 便利べんりな+noun (before a noun). The past is 便利べんりでした, and the negative is 便利べんりじゃないです.

What is the opposite of 便利べんり?

The opposite is 不便ふべん (ふべん), "inconvenient." It is also a な-adjective, and the 不ふ simply negates the 便びん.

この辺あたりは電車でんしゃが少すくなくて不便ふべんです。 — This area is inconvenient because there are few trains. (polite, complaint about a location) 不便ふべんな生活せいかつ — an inconvenient way of life (neutral, 不便ふべん + な + noun)

不便ふべん is a plain description, not a rude word. People use it for places, old systems and awkward tools. Japanese tends to soften complaints, so you will often hear ちょっと不便ふべんですね, "it's a little inconvenient."

Where does コンビニ come from?

コンビニ is the shortened form of コンビニエンスストア, "convenience store." Japanese loves cutting long loanwords down to four morae, and this is the famous example.

コンビニで水みずを買かってくる。 — I'll go buy water at the convenience store. (casual, everyday) コンビニは24時間じかん開ひらいていて便利べんりです。 — Convenience stores are open 24 hours, so they're handy. (polite)

Notice that コンビニ has nothing to do with the word 便利べんり itself. It is borrowed from English, and Japanese then uses 便利べんり to describe what makes it good. If you hear a character say コンビニ, you can safely translate it as "the convenience store" and nothing more.

Beyond the basics

What is 都合つごう, and how is it different from 便利べんり?

都合つごう (つごう) means "circumstances" or "how things work out for someone," and it is the word for schedules and timing. 便利べんり is for objects and places. 都合つごう is for time, plans and personal situations.

明日あしたは都合つごうが悪わるいです。 — Tomorrow isn't convenient for me. (polite, declining a day) いつがご都合つごうよろしいですか。 — When is convenient for you? (very polite, business or customer service) 来週らいしゅうの都合つごうはどうですか。 — How does next week look for you? (polite, scheduling) 金曜日きんようびは都合つごうがいいですか。 — Is Friday convenient for you? (polite, scheduling)

The common patterns are 都合つごうがいい (convenient, works for me) and 都合つごうが悪わるい (inconvenient, doesn't work). The honorific version, ご都合つごうはいかがですか, is the standard way to ask "is that time convenient for you?" in an email or a shop.

The contrast in one pair:

この駅えきは便利べんりです。 — This station is convenient. (the place itself is handy) この時間じかんは都合つごうがいいです。 — This time works for me. (my schedule allows it)

Saying 明日あしたは便利べんりです for "tomorrow is convenient" is wrong. Tomorrow is not a tool or a place; it is a time, so you need 都合つごう.

Can you call a person 便利べんり?

Be careful. 便利べんりな人ひと sounds like "a handy person to have around," which can feel like you are only using them. A person can be 頼たよりになる (reliable) or 親切しんせつ (kind), but calling someone 便利べんり treats them like a gadget.

彼かれは便利べんりな人ひとだ。 — He's a handy guy to have around. (casual, can sound like he's being used)

The same coldness shows up in 都合つごうのいい人ひと, "a person who is convenient for me," which usually describes someone being used. As a learner, keep 便利べんり for things and places and you will avoid the awkward reading.

How is 楽らく different from 便利べんり?

楽らく (らく) means "easy" or "comfortable" — low effort or low stress — while 便利べんり means "useful." A tool can be both, but they highlight different things. If your focus is "this saves work," 楽らく is natural. If it is "this is handy and useful," 便利べんり is better.

電動でんどう自転車じてんしゃだと坂さかが楽らくです。 — Hills are easy on an electric bike. (polite, focus on less effort) 電動でんどう自転車じてんしゃは便利べんりです。 — Electric bikes are convenient. (polite, focus on usefulness)

楽らく also has the "relaxed" meaning (気きが楽らく means "feeling at ease"), which 便利べんり never has. For a different kind of "easy," the difficulty sense, see easy in Japanese: 簡単かんたん and 易やさしい.

What about 使つかいやすい?

使つかいやすい means "easy to use," and it is about the design of a thing, not whether it is useful. A knife can be 使つかいやすい without being 便利べんり, and a complicated app can be 便利べんり without being 使つかいやすい.

このスマホは使つかいやすいです。 — This phone is easy to use. (polite, about the interface) このアプリは便利べんりだけど、使つかいにくいです。 — This app is handy, but hard to use. (polite, contrasting the two)

使つかいにくい is the opposite, "hard to use." The やすい here is the verb ending meaning "easy to do," the same sound as in 安やすい (cheap), which has its own explanation in cheap in Japanese.

How does 便利べんり sound in anime?

Anime uses 便利べんり in a few set ways. You will hear 便利べんりな能力のうりょく, "a handy ability," when a character discovers a useful power. A flat 便利べんりだな… said with a sigh can mean "that's convenient," and it can also be sarcastic when something works out suspiciously well. The 都合つごう word appears in stories as 都合つごうがいい, and a very common complaint about plots is 都合つごうがよすぎる, "too convenient."

便利べんりな能力のうりょくだな。 — That's a handy ability. (casual, impressed) 話はなしがうますぎる。都合つごうがよすぎるよ。 — This is too good to be true. It's too convenient. (casual, suspicious tone)

In shops and customer-service scenes, ご都合つごう and いかがでしょうか appear constantly, which is why the polite 都合つごう pattern is worth learning early.

Common mistakes

  • Using 便利べんり for time or schedule. 「明日あしたは便利べんりです」 is not what you want. Use 明日あしたは都合つごうがいいです.
  • Treating 便利べんり as an い-adjective. 便利べんりい is not a word. Use 便利べんりな before a noun and 便利べんりです at the end.
  • Calling a person 便利べんり. It can sound like you only value them for what they do for you.
  • Asking "is that convenient?" with 便利べんりですか for a meeting time. Use ご都合つごうはいかがですか instead.
  • Confusing 不便ふべん with 都合つごうが悪わるい. 不便ふべん is a lasting quality of a place or system. 都合つごうが悪わるい is about one day or one moment.

Which word do you need?

Word Meaning Used for Example

不便ふべん (ふべん) inconvenient places, systems 不便ふべんな場所ばしょ
都合つごうがいい convenient, works for me time, plans, situations 明日あしたは都合つごうがいい
都合つごうが悪わるい not convenient for me time, plans 今日きょうは都合つごうが悪わるい
楽らく (らく) easy, comfortable effort, feelings この道みちは楽らくだ
使つかいやすい easy to use design of an object 使つかいやすい機械きかい

Practice

Pick the word before opening the answer. Questions 1 and 2 are a pair: the same English word, two different Japanese words.

1. You want to say "This train line is convenient." Which do you use, 便利べんり or 都合つごう?

Show answer

便利べんり — a train line is a place or service, so 便利べんりです fits. This is the pair to question 2.

2. A friend asks if Friday works. How do you say "Friday is convenient for me"?

Show answer

金曜日きんようびは都合つごうがいいです — a day is a time, so use 都合つごう, not 便利べんり.

3. Fill in the blank: 便利べんり___道具どうぐ (a handy tool).

Show answer

な — 便利べんり is a な-adjective, so it needs な before a noun.

4. What is the opposite of 便利べんり?

Show answer

不便ふべん (ふべん) — the prefix 不ふ negates 便びん, and 不便ふべん is also a な-adjective.

5. How do you politely ask a customer "Is that time convenient for you?"

Show answer

ご都合つごうはいかがですか — the ご adds honorific respect to 都合つごう, and いかがですか is the polite "how about...?"

6. What does コンビニ come from?

Show answer

コンビニエンスストア (convenience store) — a shortened loanword, not a form of 便利べんり.

7. An app is useful, but its buttons are confusing. Which describes it better, 便利べんり or 使つかいやすい?

Show answer

便利べんり (but 使つかいにくい) — useful does not mean easy to use. 便利べんりだけど使つかいにくい says both at once.

8. You are going up a hill on an electric bike and it takes almost no effort. Which word highlights the low effort, 楽らく or 便利べんり?

Show answer

楽らく — 楽らく is about low effort or comfort; 便利べんり is about usefulness.

9. Someone says 彼かれは便利べんりな人ひとだ about a coworker. Is that warm praise?

Show answer

Not really — it can sound like the person is only valued for what they do for others. 頼たよりになる人ひと is the warmer choice.

A trial lesson is a good place to ask a teacher whether Tuesday is 都合つごうがいい and whether a shop is 便利べんり, and see why they are not the same word.

FAQ

Is 便利べんり an い-adjective or a な-adjective? It is a な-adjective. You say 便利べんりな道具どうぐ before a noun and 便利べんりです at the end of a sentence, even though the reading ends in り.

How do I say "convenient" for a time or appointment? Use 都合つごう: 都合つごうがいい (works for me) or 都合つごうが悪わるい (doesn't work). The polite question is ご都合つごうはいかがですか.

Is 便利べんり the same as 楽らく? No. 便利べんり is about usefulness, and 楽らく is about low effort or feeling comfortable. A tool can be both, but each word points at a different quality.

Does コンビニ have anything to do with 便利べんり? No. コンビニ is short for コンビニエンスストア, borrowed from English. 便利べんり is a separate Japanese word (of Chinese origin) that is used to describe why such shops are handy.

What does 都合つごうがよすぎる mean? It means "too convenient," usually with a suspicious tone, as when events in a story work out a little too neatly.

Can I use 便利べんり for a person? You can, but 便利べんりな人ひと can sound like you are using them. For praise, choose 頼たよりになる (reliable) or 親切しんせつ (kind) instead.
