Confidence in Japanese: 自信じしん (じしん), 自信じしんがある, and the 地震じしん that sounds the same

"Confidence" in Japanese is 自信じしん (じしん): 自信じしんがある means "I'm confident", and 自信じしんがない means "I'm not confident". To encourage someone, say 自信じしんを持もって, "be confident". Careful: 地震じしん, "earthquake", is also read じしん.

自信じしん is a word learners need surprisingly early, often to say they do not have it: 日本語にほんごに自信じしんがない, "I'm not confident in my Japanese". It is also a word with a famous twin. 自信じしん and 地震じしん sound exactly the same, and in a country with frequent earthquakes, the mix-up produces some memorable sentences. This post covers the word, the phrases around it, and how to keep the two apart.

How do you use 自信じしん?

How do you say "I'm confident"?

Say 自信じしんがあります (polite) or 自信じしんがある (casual). The thing you are confident in takes に or について.

料理りょうりには自信じしんがあります。 — I'm confident in my cooking. (polite, a modest boast) 今回こんかいのテストは自信じしんがある。 — I'm confident about this test. (casual)

The kanji are 自じ (self) and 信しん (belief, trust): 自信じしん is literally "belief in yourself". The same 信しん appears in 信しんじる, "to believe"; see believe in Japanese.

How do you say "I'm not confident"?

Say 自信じしんがありません or 自信じしんがない. In Japanese conversation, this modest form is often the more natural choice.

日本語にほんごにはまだ自信じしんがありません。 — I'm still not confident in my Japanese. (polite, modest) うまくできるか自信じしんがない。 — I'm not sure I can do it well. (casual, nervous)

The second pattern, [question] か自信じしんがない, "I'm not sure whether...", is very useful: 間に合まにあうか自信じしんがない, "I'm not sure I'll make it in time".

How do you tell someone to be confident?

Say 自信じしんを持もって (じしんをもって), "have confidence". 持もつ, "to hold", is the verb for having confidence.

自信じしんを持もってください。 — Please be confident. (polite, encouraging) もっと自信じしん持もっていいよ。 — You can be more confident, you know. (casual, supportive)

The opposite, losing confidence, is 自信じしんをなくす: 失敗しっぱいして自信じしんをなくした, "I lost confidence after failing".

What other confidence words are there?

What does 自信満々じしんまんまん mean?

自信満々じしんまんまん (じしんまんまん) means "brimming with confidence", sometimes a little too much. It describes how someone looks or acts.

彼かれは自信満々じしんまんまんで手てを挙あげた。 — He raised his hand, full of confidence. (neutral, describing a scene)

In anime, a 自信満々じしんまんまん character can be about to be humbled, which is part of the comedy.

What is 自信過剰じしんかじょう?

自信過剰じしんかじょう (じしんかじょう) means "overconfident". 過剰かじょう means "excess". It is a criticism.

それは自信過剰じしんかじょうじゃない? — Isn't that overconfident? (casual, a gentle warning)

What does 堂々どうどうと mean?

堂々どうどうと (どうどうと) means "confidently, with dignity": standing tall without hesitation. It describes how you do something.

発表はっぴょうでは堂々どうどうと話はなしてください。 — Please speak confidently in your presentation. (polite, advice)

A related idiom is 胸むねを張はる (むねをはる), "to puff out your chest", meaning to be proud and confident. For pride words, see proud in Japanese.

What is 自己じこ肯定こうてい感かん?

自己じこ肯定こうてい感かん (じここうていかん) is "self-esteem": the sense that you are okay as you are. It is a common word in modern discussions about education and mental health.

自己じこ肯定こうてい感かんが低ひくいと、新あたらしいことに挑戦ちょうせんしにくい。 — When your self-esteem is low, it's hard to try new things. (neutral)

自信じしん is confidence in your abilities; 自己じこ肯定こうてい感かん is a deeper acceptance of yourself.

Word Reading Meaning Tone
自信じしん じしん confidence neutral
自信じしんがある / ない じしんがある / ない confident / not confident everyday
自信じしんを持もつ じしんをもつ to be confident encouraging
自信満々じしんまんまん じしんまんまん full of confidence can be too much
自信過剰じしんかじょう じしんかじょう overconfident criticism
堂々どうどうと どうどうと confidently, with dignity positive
自己じこ肯定こうてい感かん じここうていかん self-esteem modern, serious

Beyond the basics

How do you keep 自信じしん and 地震じしん apart?

They are both read じしん, so context and kanji do the work. 自信じしん is about people's feelings; 地震じしん (earthquake) is about the ground shaking.

昨日きのうの夜よる、地震じしんがあった。 — There was an earthquake last night. (casual, news) 地震じしんには自信じしんがない。 — I'm not confident when it comes to earthquakes. (casual, a pun)

The second sentence is a little joke that uses both. In real conversation, context gives it away: 地震じしん goes with 起おきる, 揺ゆれる and the news, while 自信じしん goes with ない, 持もつ and なくす. For more same-sound words, see Japanese homophones.

How do you say "I'm confident that..."?

Use 〜と確信かくしんしている (かくしんしている), "I'm convinced that...", for strong belief in a fact. 自信じしん is mostly about your own ability or chances; 確信かくしん is about certainty.

このチームは勝かつと確信かくしんしている。 — I'm convinced this team will win. (neutral, strong belief)

How does modesty affect confidence talk?

In Japanese conversation, people often play down their confidence, even when they are skilled. 自信じしんはないですが… ("I'm not confident, but...") is a common opener before doing something well. It is modesty, not a literal statement, so do not take it at face value.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 私わたしは自信じしんです. It is 自信じしんがあります.
  • Writing 地震じしん when you mean confidence. Same sound, different kanji.
  • Using 自信じしん for a plain fact. For "I'm convinced this is true", 確信かくしん usually sounds more natural.
  • Saying 自信じしんを持もちます as encouragement. The encouraging form is 自信じしんを持もって.
  • Taking 自信じしんがないです literally every time. It is often modesty.

The 自信じしん and 地震じしん pair is one I have written out in kanji during lessons to clear up a confusing sentence, and 日本語にほんごに自信じしんがない is something I hear often from learners who are better than they think.
