Clock in Japanese: 時計とけい (とけい), 腕時計うでどけい, 目覚めざまし時計とけい, and 時計とけい回まわり

"Clock" in Japanese is 時計とけい (とけい), and the same word covers watches too. A wristwatch is 腕時計うでどけい (うでどけい), an alarm clock is 目覚めざまし時計とけい (めざましどけい), and "clockwise" is 時計とけい回まわり (とけいまわり). Notice that とけい becomes どけい inside compounds.

時計とけい is a word you need on day one in Japan, whether you are asking what time it is or setting an alarm before an early train. The interesting part is how one word stretches to clocks, watches, timers, and even your body clock.

How do you say "clock" in Japanese?

What does 時計とけい mean?

時計とけい (とけい) is any device that tells time: a wall clock, a watch, or a clock on a tower.

時計とけいを見みたら、もう七時しちじだった。 — When I looked at the clock, it was already seven. (casual) この部屋へやには時計とけいがない。 — There's no clock in this room. (casual)

For telling the time, see how to tell time in Japanese.

Is "watch" also 時計とけい?

Yes. When it matters, say 腕時計うでどけい (うでどけい), "arm clock". In casual talk, just 時計とけい is fine.

新あたらしい腕時計うでどけいを買かった。 — I bought a new watch. (casual)

The 腕うで in 腕時計うでどけい also means skill, so a hairdresser who is 腕うでがいい is a skilled one, and arm in Japanese adds 腕うでを上あげる, to get better at something.

What is 目覚めざまし時計とけい?

目覚めざまし時計とけい (めざましどけい) is an alarm clock. People often shorten it to 目覚めざまし.

目覚めざましが鳴ならなかった。 — My alarm didn't go off. (casual)

For morning words, see good morning in Japanese.

Why does とけい become どけい?

This is rendaku, a sound change in compound words. The first sound of the second word often gets voiced: 腕うで + 時計とけい = うでどけい. Not every compound does this, so learn each one as a whole word.

Word Reading Meaning
時計とけい とけい clock, watch
腕時計うでどけい うでどけい wristwatch
目覚めざまし時計とけい めざましどけい alarm clock
砂時計すなどけい すなどけい hourglass
時計とけい回まわり とけいまわり clockwise
反時計はんとけい回まわり はんとけいまわり counterclockwise
体内時計たいないどけい たいないどけい body clock
時計台とけいだい とけいだい clock tower

How do you say a clock is fast or slow?

A fast clock is 進すすんでいる (すすんでいる). A slow clock is 遅おくれている (おくれている).

あの時計とけいは五分ごふん進すすんでいる。 — That clock is five minutes fast. (casual) 私わたしの時計とけい、遅おくれてない? — Isn't my watch slow? (casual)

How do you set a clock?

Use 合あわせる (あわせる), "to match": 時計とけいを合あわせる.

時計とけいを駅えきの時計とけいに合あわせた。 — I set my watch by the station clock. (casual)

What is 時計とけい回まわり?

時計とけい回まわり (とけいまわり) is clockwise. The opposite is 反時計はんとけい回まわり. You will hear these in games, recipes, and exercise classes.

時計とけい回まわりに順番じゅんばんに話はなしてください。 — Please speak in turn, going clockwise. (polite)

What is 体内時計たいないどけい?

体内時計たいないどけい (たいないどけい) is your body clock. When it is off after travel, people say 体内時計たいないどけいがくるった.

旅行りょこうのあと、体内時計たいないどけいがくるった。 — My body clock got messed up after the trip. (casual)

For travel tiredness, see jet lag in Japanese.

What do Japanese trains have to do with clocks?

Japanese trains are famous for running on time, and station clocks are checked carefully. Many people set their watches by the station clock, and even a short delay often gets an apology announcement. This is why 時間じかん通どおり (じかんどおり, on time) is such a common phrase in Japan, and why being late to work because of the train comes with an official delay certificate called 遅延ちえん証明書しょうめいしょ.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 腕時計うでどけい as うでとけい. It is うでどけい.
  • Using ウォッチ for a wristwatch. 時計とけい or 腕時計うでどけい is normal.
  • Only saying 時計とけいが早はやい for a fast clock. You will hear it casually, but 進すすんでいる is the standard way.
  • Saying 時計とけいをセットする to set the time. Use 合あわせる.
  • Mixing up 時計とけい回まわり and 反時計はんとけい回まわり. 反はん means opposite.
