Choice in Japanese: 選択せんたく (せんたく), 選択肢せんたくし, 選えらぶ, and おまかせ

"Choice" in Japanese is 選択せんたく (せんたく), and the options you choose from are 選択肢せんたくし (せんたくし). The everyday verb is 選えらぶ (えらぶ), "to choose". In conversation, people rarely say 選択せんたく; they ask どっちにする?, "which will you go with?". "No choice" is 〜しかない, and "chef's choice" at a restaurant is おまかせ.

Choice words matter every day: at restaurants, in shops, on forms, and when making plans with friends. Japanese has a formal noun, a casual verb, and a handful of set phrases for when there is only one option, two options, or when you hand the choice to someone else. This post covers them in the order you will need them.

How do you say "choice" in Japanese?

What does 選えらぶ mean?

選えらぶ (えらぶ) is "to choose" or "to pick". It is the word you will use most.

好すきなのを選えらんでね。 — Pick whichever one you like. (casual) どれを選えらびましたか? — Which one did you choose? (polite)

What do 選択せんたく and 選択肢せんたくし mean?

選択せんたく (せんたく) is the act of choosing, a choice. 選択肢せんたくし (せんたくし) is an option, one of the possible choices. 肢し means "limb" or "branch".

いい選択せんたくだと思おもう。 — I think it's a good choice. (casual) 選択肢せんたくしが多おおすぎて迷まよう。 — There are too many options, I can't decide. (casual)

Note that 選択せんたく is also how 洗濯せんたく (laundry) sounds: same せんたく, different kanji. For 迷まよう, see decide in Japanese.

How do you ask "which one?"

Ask どっちにする? for two options, or どれにする? for three or more. 〜にする means "to decide on ~".

コーヒーと紅茶こうちゃ、どっちにする? — Coffee or tea, which do you want? (casual) じゃあ、これにします。 — Then I'll go with this one. (polite, ordering)

How do you talk about having no choice?

What does 〜しかない mean?

〜しかない means "there's nothing but ~": the only option. Verb + しかない is "I have no choice but to ~".

終電しゅうでんがないから、歩あるくしかない。 — The last train's gone, so I have no choice but to walk. (casual)

For the related resigned phrase, see 仕方しかたがない and しょうがない.

What does 選択肢せんたくしがない mean?

選択肢せんたくしがない is "there are no options". It is a little more formal than 〜しかない.

ほかに選択肢せんたくしがなかった。 — There was no other option. (casual)

Word Reading Meaning
選えらぶ えらぶ to choose
選択せんたく せんたく choice
選択肢せんたくし せんたくし option
どっちにする? どっちにする which (of two)?
〜にする 〜にする to go with ~
〜しかない 〜しかない no choice but ~
二に択たく にたく two options
おまかせ おまかせ chef's choice, leave it to you

Beyond the basics

What is 二に択たく?

二に択たく (にたく) is a choice between two options. 三択さんたく (さんたく) is three. You will hear it on quiz shows and in everyday decisions.

今日きょうの夕飯ゆうはんはカレーかラーメンの二に択たくだ。 — Dinner tonight is a choice between curry and ramen. (casual)

When a 二に択たく feels too close to call, you may end up wanting both anyway, and that is its own grammar point — see both in Japanese.

What is おまかせ?

おまかせ, "leaving it to you", is the chef's choice at sushi restaurants and an easy way to hand any decision to someone else.

おまかせでお願ねがいします。 — I'll leave it to you, please. (polite, ordering) 場所ばしょはおまかせするよ。 — I'll leave the place up to you. (casual)

What does 選えらび放題ほうだい mean?

選えらび放題ほうだい (えらびほうだい) means "choose as many as you like" or "all you can pick". It appears in sales and buffets.

このセットはトッピングが選えらび放題ほうだいです。 — With this set you can choose as many toppings as you like. (polite)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 選択せんたくする in casual talk. It is stiff; say 選えらぶ or 〜にする.
  • Confusing 選択せんたく (choice) with 洗濯せんたく (laundry). Same sound, different kanji.
  • Using どれ for two options. Two options take どっち.
  • Saying 歩あるくだけない for "no choice but to walk". It is 歩あるくしかない.
  • Reading 選択肢せんたくし as せんたくあし. It is せんたくし.

Practice

Try each answer before opening it. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: two options versus three or more.

1. Tell a friend casually, "Pick whichever one you like."

Show answer

好すきなのを選えらんでね。 — 選えらぶ.

2. Say "I think it's a good choice."

Show answer

いい選択せんたくだと思おもう。 — 選択せんたく.

3. Offer coffee or tea and ask which they want.

Show answer

コーヒーと紅茶こうちゃ、どっちにする? — どっち for two.

4. Show a menu with many dishes and ask casually which one they'll have.

Show answer

どれにする? — どれ for three or more. This is the pair to question 3.

5. Order politely: "Then I'll go with this one."

Show answer

じゃあ、これにします。 — 〜にする.

6. Say "There are too many options, I can't decide."

Show answer

選択肢せんたくしが多おおすぎて迷まよう。 — 選択肢せんたくし.

7. The last train is gone. Say you have no choice but to walk.

Show answer

終電しゅうでんがないから、歩あるくしかない。 — 〜しかない.

8. At a sushi counter, leave the choice to the chef politely.

Show answer

おまかせでお願ねがいします。 — おまかせ.

9. Say "Dinner tonight is a choice between curry and ramen."

Show answer

今日きょうの夕飯ゆうはんはカレーかラーメンの二に択たくだ。 — 二に択たく.

10. Fix: 終電しゅうでんがないから、歩あるくだけない。

Show answer

終電しゅうでんがないから、歩あるくしかない。 — "no choice but" is しかない.

Ordering with 〜にする or おまかせ instead of 選択せんたくする is easy to practise with a pretend menu in a trial lesson.
