"To call" in Japanese depends on what kind of call. A phone call is 電話でんわする (でんわする) or 電話でんわをかける. Calling someone over, calling a taxi or calling an ambulance is 呼よぶ (よぶ). Calling someone by a name is 〜と呼よぶ: ユウと呼よんで, "call me Yuu".

English "call" covers phones, shouting for someone, naming and summoning help. Japanese separates the phone (電話でんわ) from calling out or naming (呼よぶ), and using the wrong one changes the meaning. This post covers both, with the set phrases you will need on the phone and in an emergency.

How do you say "call" on the phone?

What does 電話でんわする mean?

電話でんわする (でんわする) is "to call" on the phone. Use に for the person: 母ははに電話でんわする.

— I'll call you later. — I'll call the shop tomorrow. (polite)

What does 電話でんわをかける mean?

電話でんわをかける is "to make a phone call", a slightly more descriptive version of 電話でんわする.

— I called the wrong person by mistake. (casual)

What does 折り返おりかえす mean?

折り返おりかえす (おりかえす) is "to call back". At work, 折り返おりかえしお電話でんわします means "I'll call you back".

— I'll call you back. (very polite, business)

How do you say "call" someone over?

What does 呼よぶ mean?

呼よぶ (よぶ) is "to call" someone over, to summon, or to invite.

— Please call a taxi. — Call an ambulance! — I invited friends over to my place. (casual)

In an emergency in Japan, the number for an ambulance or fire is 119. The number for the police is 110, and police in Japanese gives 警察けいさつをお願ねがいします, "the police, please", for when someone answers, plus what to do if you mix up the two numbers.

How do you say "call me ~"?

〜と呼よぶ is "to call someone ~".

— Please call me Yuuki. — Everyone calls me "sensei". (casual)

For name endings like さん and くん, see san, kun, chan, sama. For the rest of a self-introduction, see nice to meet you in Japanese.

How do you call out someone's name?

名前なまえを呼よぶ is "to call someone's name", like in a waiting room or a classroom.

— When your name is called, please go in. (polite)
