Breath in Japanese: 息いき (いき), 深呼吸しんこきゅう, ため息いき, and 息抜いきぬき

"Breath" in Japanese is 息いき (いき). "Breathe in" is 息いきを吸すう (すう), "breathe out" is 息いきを吐はく (はく), and a deep breath is 深呼吸しんこきゅう (しんこきゅう). A sigh is ため息いき (ためいき), and taking a break is 息抜いきぬき (いきぬき), "pulling out your breath".

Breath shows up in many everyday Japanese idioms: about rest, teamwork, surprise, and stress. Once you know 息いき, a whole group of expressions opens up.

How do you say "breath" in Japanese?

What does 息いき mean?

息いき (いき) is breath, the air going in and out of your body.

寒さむくて息いきが白しろい。 — It's so cold my breath is white. (casual) 大おおきく息いきを吸すって、ゆっくり吐はいて。 — Breathe in deeply, then breathe out slowly. (casual)

What is 呼吸こきゅう?

呼吸こきゅう (こきゅう) is breathing as a process, used in medical or formal talk. 深呼吸しんこきゅう (しんこきゅう) is a deep breath.

緊張きんちょうしたら、深呼吸しんこきゅうしよう。 — When you're nervous, take a deep breath. (casual)

For nerves, see nervous in Japanese.

What does 息いきが切きれる mean?

息いきが切きれる, "breath cuts off", is to be out of breath.

階段かいだんを上あったら息いきが切きれた。 — I was out of breath after climbing the stairs. (casual)

For fitness words, see exercise in Japanese.

What is ため息いき?

ため息いき (ためいき) is a sigh. ため息いきをつく is "to sigh". Japanese people sometimes joke that each sigh lets a little happiness escape.

またため息いきついてるよ。 — You're sighing again. (casual) ため息いきをつくと幸しあわせが逃にげるよ。 — They say sighing makes your happiness run away. (casual saying)

Word Reading Meaning
息いき いき breath
息いきを吸すう いきをすう to breathe in
息いきを吐はく いきをはく to breathe out
深呼吸しんこきゅう しんこきゅう deep breath
ため息いき ためいき sigh
息いきが切きれる いきがきれる to be out of breath
息抜いきぬき いきぬき a break
息いきが合あう いきがあう to be in sync

What idioms use 息いき?

What is 息抜いきぬき?

息抜いきぬき (いきぬき) is a short break to relax.

勉強べんきょうの息抜いきぬきに散歩さんぽした。 — I took a walk as a break from studying. (casual)

What does 一息ひといきつく mean?

一息ひといきつく (ひといきつく), "take one breath", is to pause and rest after work.

仕事しごとが終おわって、やっと一息ひといきついた。 — Work is over, so I can finally catch my breath. (casual)

What does 息いきが合あう mean?

息いきが合あう, "breaths match", means people work together in perfect sync.

あの二人ふたりは息いきがぴったり合あっている。 — Those two are perfectly in sync. (casual)

Two coworkers can be 息いきが合あう on the job without being 気きが合あう as friends, and 気きが合あう vs 息いきが合あう has the casual line 息いきは合あうけど、気きは合あわない for exactly that.

What does 息いきをのむ mean?

息いきをのむ, "swallow your breath", is to gasp in amazement.

息いきをのむほど美うつくしい景色けしきだった。 — The view was breathtakingly beautiful. (casual)

What does 息いきを殺ころす mean?

息いきを殺ころす, "kill your breath", is to hold your breath and stay silent, often while hiding. It appears in suspense and ninja scenes.

息いきを殺ころして隠かくれていた。 — I hid, holding my breath. (casual)

What does 息苦いきぐるしい mean?

息苦いきぐるしい (いきぐるしい) means hard to breathe, either physically or emotionally. A stuffy room and a tense, controlling atmosphere can both be 息苦いきぐるしい.

マスクをつけたまま走はしると息苦いきぐるしい。 — It's hard to breathe when I run with a mask on. (casual) あの職場しょくばは息苦いきぐるしい雰囲気ふんいきだった。 — That workplace had a suffocating atmosphere. (casual)

The second meaning is common when people talk about strict schools, offices, or small towns, so it is a useful word for describing feelings, not just your lungs.

Common mistakes

  • Saying 息いきをする for "take a deep breath". Use 深呼吸しんこきゅうする.
  • Reading ため息いき as ためいぎ. It is ためいき.
  • Using 呼吸こきゅう in casual chat. 息いき is more natural.
  • Taking 息いきが合あう literally. It means being in sync.
  • Thinking 息抜いきぬき is about breathing. It means a break.
