Beginner in Japanese: 初心者しょしんしゃ (しょしんしゃ), 初級しょきゅう, 素人しろうと, and how to say "I''m still a beginner

"Beginner" in Japanese is 初心者しょしんしゃ (しょしんしゃ). To say "I'm still a beginner", use 日本語にほんごはまだ初心者しょしんしゃです. For course levels, Japanese uses 初級しょきゅう (しょきゅう) for "beginner level" and 入門にゅうもん (にゅうもん) for "introduction".

This is one of those words you need on day one, usually to apologize in advance: "Sorry, my Japanese is beginner level." It is also a word you will see everywhere once you know it, on textbooks, game menus, car stickers and ski slopes. The trick is that Japanese has several "beginner" words, and each belongs to a different place: a person, a class, a job, or a game. This post sorts them out.

What does 初心者しょしんしゃ mean, and how do you use it?

How do you say "I'm a beginner" in Japanese?

Say [skill] は まだ 初心者しょしんしゃです, "I'm still a beginner at [skill]". まだ (still) makes it sound natural and modest, the way Japanese speakers usually talk about their own level.

日本語にほんごはまだ初心者しょしんしゃです。 — I'm still a beginner at Japanese. (polite, the standard self-introduction line) ゴルフは全まったくの初心者しょしんしゃです。 — I'm a complete beginner at golf. (polite, 全まったくの means "complete")

The kanji explain the word nicely: 初はつ (first), 心こころ (heart, mind), 者もの (person). A 初心者しょしんしゃ is a person with a "first-time heart". That 初心しょしん also appears in a famous saying, 初心しょしん忘わするべからず (しょしんわするべからず), "never forget your beginner's spirit", which is often quoted to people who have become experienced.

If you are writing your first self-introduction, this line fits right after your name; see self-introduction in Japanese for the full pattern.

What does 初心者向しょしんしゃむけ mean?

初心者向しょしんしゃむけ (しょしんしゃむけ) means "for beginners". 〜向むけ (むけ) is a handy suffix meaning "aimed at": 子供向こどもむけ (for children), 大人おとな向むけ (for adults), 外国人がいこくじん向むけ (for foreigners).

これは初心者向しょしんしゃむけの本ほんです。 — This is a book for beginners. (polite, describing a product) 初心者向しょしんしゃむけのコースはありますか? — Do you have a course for beginners? (polite, asking at a class or shop)

You will see 初心者向しょしんしゃむけ on manga how-to books, cooking classes, hiking trails and video game modes. If you only learn one sign word from this post, make it this one.

What is the difference between 初心者しょしんしゃ and 初級しょきゅう?

初心者しょしんしゃ is a person, and 初級しょきゅう (しょきゅう) is a level. You are a 初心者しょしんしゃ; you take a 初級しょきゅう class. Course levels in Japan usually go 初級しょきゅう → 中級ちゅうきゅう (ちゅうきゅう, intermediate) → 上級じょうきゅう (じょうきゅう, advanced).

初級しょきゅうクラスに入はいりました。 — I joined the beginner class. (polite, talking about a school) 中級ちゅうきゅうの文法ぶんぽうはまだ難むずかしいです。 — Intermediate grammar is still hard for me. (polite, your study level)

If you are wondering how these labels line up with the JLPT, see JLPT levels explained.

What does 入門にゅうもん mean?

入門にゅうもん (にゅうもん) means "introduction" or "getting started", and it labels a first course or a first book. Literally it is "entering the gate", an old image of joining a teacher or a school. Book titles like 日本語にほんご入門にゅうもん mean "Introduction to Japanese".

この本ほんは文法ぶんぽうの入門にゅうもんにちょうどいいです。 — This book is just right as an introduction to grammar. (polite, recommending a book)

So: 入門にゅうもん for the very first step, 初級しょきゅう for the beginner level overall, 初心者しょしんしゃ for the person.

Beyond the basics

What do you call a beginner at work?

At work, a beginner is a 新人しんじん (しんじん), "a new person", or more casually 新米しんまい (しんまい), literally "new rice". These describe someone new to a job or team, not someone bad at a skill.

新人しんじんの田中たなかです。よろしくお願ねがいします。 — I'm Tanaka, the new person here. Nice to work with you. (polite, a first-day greeting) まだ新米しんまいなので、教おしえてください。 — I'm still new, so please teach me. (polite and modest)

新人しんじん is also used in entertainment for newcomers: 新人しんじん声優せいゆう is a new voice actor, and 新人賞しんじんしょう is a "best newcomer" award.

What is the difference between 初心者しょしんしゃ and 素人しろうと?

素人しろうと (しろうと) means "amateur" or "layperson", the opposite of プロ or 玄人くろうと (くろうと), "expert". A 初心者しょしんしゃ is just starting out. A 素人しろうと may have done something for years but is not a professional.

料理りょうりは素人しろうとですが、好すきです。 — I'm an amateur at cooking, but I love it. (polite, modest) 素人しろうとは黙だまってろ。 — Amateurs, keep out of this. (rough, a dramatic line from anime and manga)

The second line is a famous meme in Japanese internet culture, a way of shutting down someone who has an opinion but no experience. It is very rude in real life, so enjoy it on screen only.

What is a 初心者しょしんしゃマーク?

初心者しょしんしゃマーク (しょしんしゃまーく) is the green and yellow sticker that new drivers must put on their car in Japan. It is also called 若葉わかばマーク (わかばまーく), "young leaf mark", because of its leaf shape. It tells other drivers to be patient.

車くるまに初心者しょしんしゃマークを貼はっています。 — I have a beginner driver mark on my car. (polite, explaining to someone)

People also use 初心者しょしんしゃマーク as a joke for themselves: 料理りょうりでは、まだ初心者しょしんしゃマークです, "I still have my beginner sticker when it comes to cooking."

What do gamers say for "beginner"?

Gamers use 初心者しょしんしゃ too, plus 初見しょけん (しょけん), "first time seeing it", and 初心者しょしんしゃ狩かり (しょしんしゃがり), "beginner hunting". 初見しょけん is common in streaming: a 初見しょけんプレイ is a blind playthrough, and viewers type 初見しょけんです to say "first time watching this stream".

このゲームは初見しょけんです。 — This is my first time playing this game. (polite, streaming or online play) 初心者しょしんしゃ狩かりはやめてほしい。 — I wish people would stop picking on beginners. (casual, an online complaint)

For more of this vocabulary, see Japanese gaming terms and slang.

How do you ask someone to go easy on you?

Say 初心者しょしんしゃなので、ゆっくりお願ねがいします, "I'm a beginner, so slowly please." This is one of the most useful sentences you can bring to a first conversation, because it explains the situation and gives the other person something to do.

初心者しょしんしゃなので、ゆっくり話はなしてください。 — I'm a beginner, so please speak slowly. (polite, very useful)

〜なので gives a soft reason; if you want to know why it sounds gentler than から, see から vs ので.

Which "beginner" word do you need?

Word Reading Describes Example
初心者しょしんしゃ しょしんしゃ a person starting out まだ初心者しょしんしゃです
初心者向しょしんしゃむけ しょしんしゃむけ made for beginners 初心者向しょしんしゃむけの本ほん
初級しょきゅう しょきゅう beginner level 初級しょきゅうクラス
入門にゅうもん にゅうもん introduction, first course 日本語にほんご入門にゅうもん
新人しんじん しんじん new at a job 新人しんじんの田中たなかです
新米しんまい しんまい new at a job (casual) まだ新米しんまいです
素人しろうと しろうと amateur, not a pro 料理りょうりは素人しろうとです
初見しょけん しょけん first time seeing it 初見しょけんプレイ

Common mistakes

  • Calling yourself 初級しょきゅう. 初級しょきゅう is a level, not a person. Say 私わたしは初心者しょしんしゃです, or 初級しょきゅうレベルです.
  • Using 新人しんじん for a language learner. 新人しんじん means new at a job or team. For skills, use 初心者しょしんしゃ.
  • Saying 素人しろうと when you mean "just started". 素人しろうと means "not a professional", and it can apply to people with years of experience.
  • Forgetting まだ. 初心者しょしんしゃです is correct, but まだ初心者しょしんしゃです sounds more natural and modest.
  • Saying 素人しろうとは黙だまってろ as a joke to a real person. Outside anime, it is genuinely insulting.

Practice

Try each one yourself before opening the answer. Questions 3 and 4 are a pair: a person versus a level.

1. Say "I'm still a beginner at Japanese."

Show answer

日本語にほんごはまだ初心者しょしんしゃです。 — まだ (still) makes it sound natural and modest.

2. Ask a shop "Do you have a course for beginners?"

Show answer

初心者向しょしんしゃむけのコースはありますか? — 〜向むけ means "aimed at", so 初心者向しょしんしゃむけ is "for beginners".

3. Fill in the blank: 私わたしは ___ です (I am a beginner).

Show answer

初心者しょしんしゃ — it describes a person. You are a 初心者しょしんしゃ.

4. Fill in the blank: ___ クラスに入はいりました (I joined the beginner class).

Show answer

初級しょきゅう — it is a level for classes. This is the pair to question 3: person versus level.

5. You start a new job. Introduce yourself as "the new person".

Show answer

新人しんじんの〇〇です。 — 新人しんじん means new at a job or team, not bad at a skill.

6. What is the opposite of 素人しろうと?

Show answer

プロ or 玄人くろうと — 素人しろうと means amateur, so its opposite is a professional or expert.

7. A book title says 日本語にほんご入門にゅうもん. What does it mean?

Show answer

Introduction to Japanese — 入門にゅうもん means "entering the gate", the very first step.

8. In a stream chat, a viewer types 初見しょけんです. What do they mean?

Show answer

"It's my first time here." — 初見しょけん means "first time seeing", so it is how newcomers greet a stream.

9. Ask someone to speak slowly because you are a beginner.

Show answer

初心者しょしんしゃなので、ゆっくり話はなしてください。 — 〜なので gives a soft reason, and 〜てください makes the request.

10. What is the green and yellow sticker on a new driver's car called?

Show answer

初心者しょしんしゃマーク (or 若葉わかばマーク) — new drivers in Japan display it so others know to be patient.

A trial lesson is a good place to introduce a hobby you have just started, from cooking to driving, and say you are still a 初心者しょしんしゃ to hear how it sounds.
