Japanese gaming terms: 死しにゲー, 格かくゲー, クソゲー and the slang gamers use

Japanese gamers shorten almost everything with ゲー, from ゲーム: 死しにゲー (a die-and-retry game), 音おとゲー (rhythm game), 格かくゲー (fighting game), 神かみゲー (a masterpiece) and クソゲー (a terrible game). Around those sit a handful of verbs every gamer uses — クリアする "beat the game," 詰つむ "get hopelessly stuck," 課金かきんする "pay money in a game" — and ネタバレ, "spoiler."

If you play games and study Japanese, gaming is one of the fastest ways to sound natural, because the vocabulary is short, fun and used constantly. It is also a place where textbook Japanese fails you: no textbook teaches 積つみゲー, yet every gamer with a backlog knows it. This article covers the words that come up when Japanese gamers actually talk — in chat, in reviews, and on streams.

The basics

Why do so many words end in ゲー?

Because Japanese loves to shorten loanwords, and ゲーム becomes ゲー at the end of a compound. The long mark ー is often dropped too: ソシャゲ, 格かくゲ. The first part tells you the kind of game or the verdict. Once you know the pattern, you can often guess a new word the first time you see it.

What are the genre words?

  • 死しにゲー (shinige) — "die game": a game where you die over and over and learn from it. Soulslikes are the classic example.
  • 音おとゲー (otoge) — rhythm game. 音おと is "sound."
  • 格かくゲー (kakuge) — fighting game, short for 格闘かくとうゲーム.
  • ソシャゲ (soshage) — mobile "social game," usually free-to-play with gacha.
  • エロゲー — adult games. Worth knowing so you recognize it, not so you say it at dinner.

死しにゲーは好すきだけど、格かくゲーは苦手にがて。 — I like die-and-retry games, but fighting games aren't my thing. (casual) 最近さいきん、音おとゲーにハマってる。 — I've been hooked on rhythm games lately. (casual)

For the difference between 苦手にがて and 下手へた in sentences like the first one, see good at and bad at in Japanese.

How do you say you beat a game?

クリアする, from English "clear." It is the standard verb for finishing a game or a stage.

やっとクリアした! — I finally beat it! (casual) このゲーム、クリアまで何時間なんじかんかかりますか? — How many hours does it take to beat this game? (polite)

The final boss is the ラスボス (last boss), and a hidden boss after the ending is a 裏うらボス (ura-boss, "back boss").

Beyond the basics

What do gamers call a great game or a terrible one?

  • 神かみゲー (kamige) — "god game": a masterpiece.
  • 良りょうゲー (ryouge) — a good game, solid but not legendary.
  • クソゲー (kusoge) — "crap game": a bad game. It is rude but extremely common, and sometimes affectionate — a クソゲー can be loved for how bad it is.

これは神かみゲーだよ。絶対ぜったいやって。 — This is a masterpiece. You have to play it. (casual) グラフィックはきれいだけど、正直しょうじきクソゲー。 — The graphics are pretty, but honestly it's a bad game. (casual)

What does 詰つむ mean?

詰つむ (tsumu) comes from shogi, where it means "to be checkmated." Gamers use it for being hopelessly stuck — no items, no way forward, the save file ruined. The past form 詰つんだ is also everyday slang for "I'm done for" outside games.

セーブする場所ばしょを間違まちがえて、詰つんだ。 — I saved in the wrong spot, and now I'm completely stuck. (casual)

What is 積つみゲー?

積つみゲー (tsumige), from 積つむ "to pile up," is a game you bought and never played. Your pile of them is your backlog. Almost every gamer has some.

セールで買かいすぎて、積つみゲーが増ふえた。 — I bought too much in the sale and my backlog grew. (casual)

Do not confuse 積つむ (pile up) with 詰つむ (get stuck). They are pronounced the same way, つむ, which makes for good jokes.

How do you talk about paying money in games?

課金かきん (kakin) is "charging, payment," and in gaming it means spending real money in a game. 課金かきんする is to pay; 無む課金かきん (mukakin) is playing for free; 重じゅう課金かきん or 廃はい課金かきん is a very heavy spender. ガチャ is the random-draw system in mobile games, named after the capsule-toy machines.

無む課金かきんでもけっこう遊あそべる。 — You can play quite a lot without paying. (casual) ガチャで推おしが出でなかった。 — My favorite character didn't come out of the gacha. (casual)

推おし (oshi) is your favorite character — a word from idol fandom that now covers games and anime too.

What other words come up on streams?

  • 実況じっきょう (jikkyou) — a let's-play or live commentary. ゲーム実況じっきょう is the whole genre of gameplay videos.
  • 縛しばりプレイ (shibari purei) — a self-imposed challenge run, like "no healing items."
  • RTA — speedrun, from "real time attack."
  • 周回しゅうかい (shuukai) — replaying a stage or the whole game repeatedly, often to farm items.
  • ネタバレ (netabare) — spoiler. ネタバレ注意ちゅうい is "spoiler warning."

ネタバレしないでね!まだクリアしてないから。 — No spoilers, please — I haven't beaten it yet. (casual)

Do gamers use 乙おつ?

Yes, in chat. 乙おつ (otsu) is short for お疲つかれ様さま, "good work," and it is what you type at the end of someone's stream or after a long raid. It is very online and very casual; do not use it at work.

Common mistakes

  • Saying ゲームを終おわった for "I beat it." Use クリアした. 終おわる is intransitive, and it does not carry the sense of beating the game.
  • Using クソゲー about a friend's favorite game. It is blunt. Say 自分じぶんには合あわなかった ("it wasn't for me").
  • Mixing up 積つむ and 詰つむ. Both are つむ. 積つみゲー is a backlog; 詰つんだ is stuck.
  • Using 乙おつ outside chat. In person, say お疲つかれ様さま.
  • Writing ゲー words in hiragana. They are katakana: 格かくゲー, not かくげー, in most places you see them.

Practice

Answers are hidden — try your own sentence first, then open. Questions 1 and 2 are a pair: the same pronunciation, つむ, with two meanings.

1. "I have too many unplayed games."

Show answer

積つみゲーが多おおすぎる。 — 積つむ is "pile up," so 積つみゲー is a game sitting in your pile.

2. "I used my last potion and now I'm totally stuck."

Show answer

最後さいごの回復かいふくアイテムを使つかって、詰つんだ。 — 詰つむ, from shogi's checkmate, means stuck with no way forward.

3. "I finally beat the final boss!"

Show answer

やっとラスボスを倒たおした! — ラスボス is the final boss. For the whole game, やっとクリアした!

4. "This game is a masterpiece."

Show answer

これは神かみゲーだ。 — 神かみゲー, "god game," is the top compliment.

5. Politely say a game wasn't for you, without calling it bad.

Show answer

自分じぶんには合あいませんでした。 — kinder than クソゲー, especially if the other person likes it.

6. "I play without spending money."

Show answer

無む課金かきんでプレイしています。 — 無む課金かきん is free-to-play without paying.

7. "No spoilers, please!"

Show answer

ネタバレしないで! — ネタバレ is spoiler. On a post, ネタバレ注意ちゅうい is the warning label.

8. Fix it: ゲームを終おわった。(you mean you beat it)

Show answer

ゲームをクリアした。 — 終おわる is intransitive and does not mean "beat." クリアする is the gamer's verb.

9. What genre is 格かくゲー, and what is it short for?

Show answer

Fighting games — 格闘かくとうゲーム. — 格闘かくとう means hand-to-hand fighting.

With a teacher in a trial lesson, review a game you have played as a 神かみゲー or a クソゲー, and say whether you beat it (クリア) or got hopelessly stuck (詰つむ).

Game talk comes up naturally in lessons with learners who play, and it is some of the most motivating vocabulary there is — you learn 詰つんだ once and you will use it for the rest of your life, inside games and out.
