Addicted in Japanese: ハマる, 〜中毒ちゅうどく, 依存いぞん, and やめられない

"I'm addicted to this game" in casual Japanese is このゲームにハマってる: ハマる means "to get hooked". For a stronger, jokey "addict", Japanese adds 〜中毒ちゅうどく (ちゅうどく): スマホ中毒ちゅうどく, "phone addict". For a real medical addiction, the word is 依存症いぞんしょう (いぞんしょう).

English uses "addicted" for everything from a TV show to a serious illness. Japanese separates the light, fun "hooked" from the serious condition, and choosing the right word matters. Saying you have 依存症いぞんしょう about a snack sounds alarming, while calling a real problem ハマってる sounds dismissive. This post walks through the scale, from fun to serious.

How do you say "addicted" casually?

What does ハマる mean?

ハマる (or はまる) means "to get hooked on" something you enjoy: a show, a game, a food, a hobby. The thing takes に.

最近さいきん、このアニメにハマってる。 — I'm hooked on this anime lately. (casual, very common) 料理りょうりにハマっています。 — I'm really into cooking. (polite)

ハマる literally means "to fit in" or "to fall into", and the hobby sense is very common. We also cover the "stuck" meaning in stuck in Japanese.

What does やめられない mean?

やめられない (can't stop) is the everyday way to say you can't put something down.

このお菓子かし、やめられない。 — I can't stop eating these snacks. (casual) 一話いちわだけのつもりが、やめられなかった。 — I meant to watch one episode, but I couldn't stop. (casual, binge-watching)

For the つもり in that sentence, see 〜つもり.

What does 沼ぬま mean?

沼ぬま (ぬま), "swamp", is fan slang for a hobby you sink into and can't climb out of. 沼ぬまにハマる is getting deeply into a fandom.

完全かんぜんにこのゲームの沼ぬまにハマった。 — I've completely fallen into this game's rabbit hole. (casual, fan talk)

For more fandom words, see otaku slang.

How do you say "addict"?

What does 〜中毒ちゅうどく mean?

〜中毒ちゅうどく (ちゅうどく) attached to a noun means "~ addiction" or "~ addict", often used jokingly about everyday habits. 中毒ちゅうどく originally means "poisoning".

私わたしはコーヒー中毒ちゅうどくです。 — I'm a coffee addict. (polite, joking) スマホ中毒ちゅうどくかもしれない。 — I might be addicted to my phone. (casual, half serious)

活字かつじ中毒ちゅうどく (かつじちゅうどく), "printed-word addiction", is a fun term for someone who always needs something to read.

What is 依存いぞん and 依存症いぞんしょう?

依存いぞん (いぞん) means dependence, and 依存症いぞんしょう (いぞんしょう) is a clinical addiction. These are serious words for real medical and psychological conditions.

ギャンブル依存症いぞんしょうの人ひとを支援しえんする団体だんたいがある。 — There are organizations that support people with gambling addiction. (neutral, serious)

Use 依存症いぞんしょう only for genuine problems. For a hobby, ハマる or a joking 〜中毒ちゅうどく fits.

Word Reading Strength Use for
ハマる ハマる light hobbies, shows, food
やめられない やめられない light can't stop
沼ぬま ぬま light, fan slang deep fandoms
〜中毒ちゅうどく ちゅうどく medium, often jokey everyday habits
依存いぞん いぞん serious dependence
依存症いぞんしょう いぞんしょう clinical real addiction

Beyond the basics

What does 夢中むちゅう mean?

夢中むちゅう (むちゅう) means "absorbed in" something, so focused you forget everything else. It is positive and a bit more grown-up than ハマる.

ゲームに夢中むちゅうで、時間じかんを忘わすれた。 — I was so absorbed in the game I lost track of time. (casual)

For more on 夢中むちゅう, see dream in Japanese.

What does 時間じかんが溶とける mean?

時間じかんが溶とける, "time melts", is slang for hours disappearing while you are hooked on something.

このゲームをやると時間じかんが溶とける。 — When I play this game, the hours just vanish. (casual, slang)

How do you talk about quitting?

やめる (to quit), 断たつ (たつ, to cut off), and 卒業そつぎょうする (to "graduate" from a hobby) are common.

SNSを一週間いっしゅうかん断たってみた。 — I tried cutting off social media for a week. (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Using 依存症いぞんしょう for a snack or a show. It sounds clinical. Use ハマる or 〜中毒ちゅうどく as a joke.
  • Saying このアニメをハマる. The thing takes に: このアニメにハマる.
  • Using ハマる for a serious addiction. It sounds dismissive.
  • Thinking 中毒ちゅうどく always means poisoning. In jokey phrases like コーヒー中毒ちゅうどく or スマホ中毒ちゅうどく it means "addict", but 食中毒しょくちゅうどく (food poisoning) still means poisoning, so check the context.
  • Overusing 沼ぬま outside fan circles. It is fandom slang.

Practice

Try each answer before opening it. Questions 5 and 6 are a pair: a joking "addict" versus a real addiction.

1. Say casually, "I'm hooked on this anime lately."

Show answer

最近さいきん、このアニメにハマってる。 — ハマる, with に.

2. Say politely, "I'm really into cooking."

Show answer

料理りょうりにハマっています。 — the polite ている form.

3. Say "I can't stop eating these snacks."

Show answer

このお菓子かし、やめられない。 — やめられない is "can't stop".

4. Say "I meant to watch one episode, but I couldn't stop."

Show answer

一話いちわだけのつもりが、やめられなかった。 — a binge-watching classic.

5. Joke politely, "I'm a coffee addict."

Show answer

私わたしはコーヒー中毒ちゅうどくです。 — 〜中毒ちゅうどく is often jokey.

6. Talk about a serious, clinical gambling addiction. Which word fits?

Show answer

ギャンブル依存症いぞんしょう — 依存症いぞんしょう is clinical. This is the pair to question 5.

7. Say "I might be addicted to my phone."

Show answer

スマホ中毒ちゅうどくかもしれない。 — half serious.

8. In fan slang, how do you say you've fallen deep into a game?

Show answer

このゲームの沼ぬまにハマった。 — 沼ぬま is the rabbit hole.

9. Say "I was so absorbed in the game I lost track of time."

Show answer

ゲームに夢中むちゅうで、時間じかんを忘わすれた。 — 夢中むちゅう is absorbed.

10. Fix: このドラマをハマっている。

Show answer

このドラマにハマっている。 — ハマる takes に.

ハマってる is the light word, 〜中毒ちゅうどく is the stronger, jokey one and 依存症いぞんしょう is the serious one, so in a trial lesson, talk about a game or a show you cannot stop watching and judge how strong each word sounds.
