Achieve in Japanese: 達成たっせい (たっせい), 叶かなえる, 実現じつげん, and 達成感たっせいかん

"To achieve" in Japanese is 達成たっせいする (たっせいする), used with goals and targets: 目標もくひょうを達成たっせいする, "to achieve a goal". The feeling of accomplishment is 達成感たっせいかん (たっせいかん). For dreams, Japanese uses 夢ゆめを叶かなえる (ゆめをかなえる), and for plans or ideas, 実現じつげんする (じつげんする), "to make real".

English uses "achieve" for goals, dreams and big accomplishments alike. Japanese picks a different verb depending on what you achieved: a number, a dream, a plan, or a hard task you finished to the end. Getting the pairing right is one of those small things that makes your Japanese sound natural. This post covers the main verbs and the feeling words around them.

How do you say "achieve" in Japanese?

What does 達成たっせいする mean?

達成たっせいする (たっせいする) is "to achieve" or "to reach" a goal, target or record. 達たつ means "reach" and 成せい means "become, accomplish".

今月こんげつの目標もくひょうを達成たっせいした! — I hit this month's goal! (casual) 売上うりあげ目標もくひょうを達成たっせいしました。 — We achieved our sales target. (polite, at work)

達成たっせい pairs naturally with 目標もくひょう (goal), ノルマ (quota) and 記録きろく (record). For the difference between 目標もくひょう and 目的もくてき, see goal in Japanese.

What is 達成感たっせいかん?

達成感たっせいかん (たっせいかん) is the sense of accomplishment you feel after finishing something hard.

最後さいごまで読よんで、すごい達成感たっせいかんがあった。 — I read it to the end and felt a huge sense of accomplishment. (casual) 達成感たっせいかんがない仕事しごとはつらい。 — Work without any sense of accomplishment is hard. (casual)

How do you say "achieve a dream"?

Use 叶かなえる (かなえる): 夢ゆめを叶かなえる is "to make a dream come true". When the dream comes true by itself, it is 夢ゆめが叶かなう (かなう).

いつか夢ゆめを叶かなえたい。 — I want to make my dream come true someday. (casual) 夢ゆめが叶かなった! — My dream came true! (casual, delighted)

For more about dreams, see dream in Japanese.

What other "achieve" verbs are there?

What does 実現じつげんする mean?

実現じつげんする (じつげんする) is "to make real" or "to realize": plans, ideas and wishes.

長年ながねんの計画けいかくがやっと実現じつげんした。 — A plan I'd had for years finally became reality. (casual)

What do やり遂とげる and 成し遂なしとげる mean?

やり遂とげる (やりとげる) is "to see something through to the end". 成し遂なしとげる (なしとげる) is the more formal "to accomplish" for big achievements.

一人ひとりで最後さいごまでやり遂とげた。 — I saw it through to the end on my own. (casual) 彼かれは偉大いだいなことを成し遂なしとげた。 — He accomplished something great. (formal)

Verb Reading Pairs with Nuance
達成たっせいする たっせいする 目標もくひょう, 記録きろく, ノルマ reach a target
叶かなえる かなえる 夢ゆめ, 願ねがい make come true
叶かなう かなう 夢ゆめが, 願ねがいが come true
実現じつげんする じつげんする 計画けいかく, アイデア make real
やり遂とげる やりとげる 仕事しごと, 挑戦ちょうせん finish to the end
成し遂なしとげる なしとげる 偉業いぎょう accomplish (formal)

Beyond the basics

What is the difference between 達成たっせい and 成功せいこう?

成功せいこう (せいこう) is "success": the overall result went well. 達成たっせい is reaching a specific target.

イベントは大成功だいせいこうだった。 — The event was a huge success. (casual)

You 達成たっせい a number; an event or a business 成功せいこうします.

What does 達成たっせい率りつ mean?

達成たっせい率りつ (たっせいりつ) is the achievement rate: what percentage of a target you reached. You will see it in work reports and fitness apps.

今週こんしゅうの達成たっせい率りつは八はち割さくらい。 — I hit about eighty percent of this week's target. (casual)

How do you praise someone's achievement?

Say よく頑張がんばったね (you worked hard) or すごいね, おめでとう (amazing, congratulations). These praise the result rather than announce your feelings, and proud in Japanese explains why a literal "I'm proud of you" can sound like a judge unless you are the parent or teacher.

目標もくひょう達成たっせいおめでとう! — Congratulations on reaching your goal! (casual)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 夢ゆめを達成たっせいする. You will hear it, but 夢ゆめを叶かなえる is the natural pairing for dreams.
  • Saying 夢ゆめが叶かなえた. It is 夢ゆめが叶かなった (intransitive) or 夢ゆめを叶かなえた (transitive).
  • Using 成し遂なしとげる for small daily tasks. It sounds grand; use やり遂とげる or 終おわらせる.
  • Mixing up 達成たっせい and 成功せいこう. 達成たっせい is a target; 成功せいこう is overall success.
  • Reading 達成感たっせいかん as たっせいがん. It is たっせいかん.

夢ゆめを叶かなえる and 目標もくひょうを達成たっせいする sound close until you have to say your own goal, so in a trial lesson, tell me about one you have actually finished and choose among 達成たっせい, 実現じつげん and やり遂とげる.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. 達成感たっせいかん is a word learners love once they have it, because it names the feeling of finishing a hard chapter, and 夢ゆめを叶かなえる versus 目標もくひょうを達成たっせいする is a pairing I correct often.
