Part of: What to Book Before Your Tokyo Trip (2026)

Anime Collab Cafés in Tokyo: How Booking Actually Works, Where They Are, and How to Get a Seat as a Visitor

An anime collab café is a themed café that runs one series for a few weeks or months, with a themed menu and event-only goods, then switches to another. The big operators either let you walk in, hand out numbered tickets, or require a booking by lottery or for vacant seats, and booked guests usually show photo ID at the door. In Akihabara, GiGO's collab café on Chuo-dori and the animate café in animate's ANNEX are the two to check first. I run private anime tours here most weeks, and the series you want decides which café you need, not the other way round.

The single most useful habit: search for the series you love plus "collab café", find which café is running it and until when, and only then look at how that café takes guests.

How do anime collab cafés in Tokyo work?

Each collaboration runs for a fixed period at one or several cafés. animate cafe lists three entry methods depending on the collaboration: first come first served, free entry, or reservation only. Reservations are either a lottery, where the system picks winners from everyone who applied, or vacant-seat booking for cancellations after the lottery.

This is the part that catches out guests on my Akihabara anime tour: the same café can be a walk-in on Tuesday and lottery-only the next month, because the rule belongs to the collaboration, not to the building. The table below is the version from animate cafe's own reservation page.

Entry method What it means What you do
First come (先着入場制) No booking; numbered tickets may be handed out if busy Turn up early
Free entry (フリー入場) No booking Turn up
Reservation: lottery (抽選予約) Apply in the entry window; winners chosen at random Apply with an account, check the result by email or on the account page
Reservation: vacant seat (空席予約) Cancelled seats released after the lottery Watch for the release, book instantly

Can tourists book a collab café?

Often yes, but read the conditions. For animate cafe, you need an account (sign-in is through Club Animate or LINE), the person who booked must attend in person, and you show your booking number and photo ID with your full name, such as a passport. Kirby Café's Tokyo branch also needs an account, and allows up to three bookings per branch per month.

Two rules that catch visitors:

Which collab cafés are in Akihabara?

Two to check first. GiGO Collab Café Akihabara Building 3 is on the 6th and 7th floors of 1-11-11 Sotokanda, on Chuo-dori, three minutes from the Electric Town Exit; it is running a Love Live! Series Official Card Game collaboration until 8 November 2026. animate cafe Gratte is in the animate Akihabara ANNEX at 4-3-1 Sotokanda.

GiGO's café takes transport IC cards and a long list of QR payments, according to its store page. Both cafés change their theme regularly, so check the current collaboration before you go; the GiGO and animate cafe sites list what is running and where.

The arcades downstairs at GiGO Building 3 are the other reason to be on that corner. If Love Live! is your series, Kanda Myojin, the shrine from the anime, is a short walk away.

Where else in Tokyo are character cafés?

Two permanent ones are worth knowing. Kirby Café Tokyo is on the 4th floor of Tokyo Solamachi East Yard at Tokyo Skytree, the same floor as Pokémon Center Skytree Town. The Pokémon Cafe is in Nihombashi, next to Pokémon Center Tokyo DX. Both take advance reservations for the café; check each official site for whether walk-ins are possible on the day.

Kirby Café changed its booking rules for August 2026 onward: you now need an account, can check and cancel bookings on your account page, and can hold up to three bookings per branch per month. It also warns against buying resold reserved seats. For the Pokémon Cafe's booking window, see what to book before your Tokyo trip.

Are collab cafés worth it?

If your series is on, yes: the food is shaped like characters, drinks often come with a themed coaster, and the goods are often only sold there. If your series is not on, no. A collab café for a show you do not watch is an expensive lunch with a lot of someone else's merchandise.

This is the honest section. Collab café menus cost more than ordinary cafés, and the bonus items, such as coasters, are often random, so you may not get your favourite character. Decide in advance how much the randomness is worth to you. Do not buy reserved seats or random bonus items from resellers; Kirby Café, for one, explicitly prohibits reselling reserved seats.

Lunch with your series, then the floors that sell it

A collab café is lunch. If you would like the floors around it chosen for the series you watch, Adventure in Akihabara with Anime is my private half-day walk, three to four hours, never shared with other guests. The price is on the tour page.
