Yellow in Japanese: 黄色きいろ (きいろ), 黄色きいろい, 黄色きいろい声こえ, 黄信こうしん号ごう, and 黄身きみ

"Yellow" in Japanese is 黄色きいろ (きいろ) as a noun and 黄色きいろい (きいろい) as an adjective. Both are everyday words: 黄色きいろが好すきです, 黄色きいろい傘かさ.

The plain color word is easy. The interesting part is how yellow behaves: it takes 色いろ where 赤あか and 青あお do not, and it shows up in idioms about fans, warnings and beginners. Learn 黄色きいろ, 黄色きいろい and 黄身きみ first. The idioms later on are N3-level, and you can come back to them.

How do you say "yellow" in Japanese?

What is the difference between 黄色きいろ and 黄色きいろい?

黄色きいろ (きいろ) is the noun "yellow", and 黄色きいろい (きいろい) is the adjective. 黄色きいろの also works before a noun.

雨あめの日ひは目立めだつように、黄色きいろい傘かさをさしている。 — On rainy days I use a yellow umbrella so I stand out. (casual) 黄色きいろが好すきです。 — I like yellow. (polite)

黄色きいろいシャツ and 黄色きいろのシャツ are both fine, and in most situations you can swap them. Both これは黄色きいろです and これは黄色きいろいです work. Before a noun, use 黄色きいろい or 黄色きいろの, never 黄色きいろいの: 黄色きいろい傘かさ or 黄色きいろの傘かさ. For why some colors have い-adjectives, see Japanese colors.

Why do we need 色いろ?

Some colors take い straight onto the kanji: 赤あかい, 青あおい, 白しろい, 黒くろい. Yellow and brown take 色いろ first, so learn 黄色きいろい and 茶色ちゃいろい as the basic forms. The kanji 黄き (き) is a color name too, but in everyday speech 黄色きいろ is the usual word, so say 黄色きいろが好すき.

How is 黄き read?

The main reading is き, as in 黄色きいろ and 黄身きみ. The on readings are こう and おう, as in 黄砂こうさ (こうさ, yellow sand blown from the continent in spring) and 黄金おうごん (おうごん). In 黄金おうごん (こがね), the old word for gold, it is こ. Learn the reading word by word rather than guessing from a rule.

What is 黄身きみ?

黄身きみ (きみ) is an egg yolk. The white is 白身しろみ (しろみ).

ゆで卵たまごは黄身きみが半熟はんじゅくなのが好すき。 — I like eggs boiled with a soft yolk. (casual)

What does yellow mean beyond color?

What is a 黄色きいろい声こえ?

黄色きいろい声こえ (きいろいこえ), "a yellow voice", is a high-pitched, excited squeal, typically from women and children and most often heard from fans. It describes the sound of the voice. For a crowd cheering in general, say 歓声かんせい (かんせい).

アイドルが出でてきて、黄色きいろい声こえが上あがった。 — When the idol came out, the fans squealed. (casual)

For more excitement words, see excited in Japanese.

What does 黄信こうしん号ごう mean?

黄信こうしん号ごう (きしんごう) is a yellow traffic light, and as a figure of speech it means a warning sign: 黄信こうしん号ごうがともる, "the yellow light comes on". In everyday talk about the actual light, people also say 黄色きいろ信号しんごう or just 信号しんごうが黄色きいろになった.

成績せいせきが落おちて、進級しんきゅうに黄信こうしん号ごうがともった。 — My grades dropped, and my moving up a grade is in danger. (casual)

What does くちばしが黄色きいろい mean?

くちばしが黄色きいろい, "your beak is still yellow", means young and inexperienced, like a baby bird whose beak has not yet changed color. It is an old-fashioned, looking-down-on-you line that mocks someone's lack of experience. It is mostly something to understand when you hear it, not to say.

くちばしが黄色きいろいくせに、生意気なまいきだ。 — You're still wet behind the ears, and yet you talk big. (old-fashioned, critical)

Word Reading Meaning
黄色きいろ きいろ yellow (noun)
黄色きいろい きいろい yellow (adjective)
黄身きみ きみ egg yolk
黄信こうしん号ごう きしんごう yellow light; warning sign
黄色きいろい声こえ きいろいこえ high-pitched, excited squeals

Beyond the basics

What does 黄金おうごん mean?

黄金おうごん (おうごん) means gold, and it is used in compounds like 黄金時代おうごんじだい (golden age) and 黄金比おうごんひ (golden ratio). For the color gold in daily speech, 金色きんいろ (きんいろ) is the usual choice.

彼かれはチームの黄金時代おうごんじだいを築きづいた。 — He built the team's golden age. (neutral)

What is 黄緑きみどり?

黄緑きみどり (きみどり) is yellow-green. It is often written 黄緑色おうりょくしょく.

春はるになって、黄緑色おうりょくしょくの葉はが出でてきた。 — Spring came, and yellow-green leaves came out. (neutral)

How do you say "yellowish" or "turn yellow"?

黄色きいろっぽい (きいろっぽい) means yellowish, having a yellow tint. 黄きばむ (きばむ) means to turn yellow with age, sunlight or stains, like old paper or a white shirt.

この白しろいシャツ、黄きばんできた。 — This white shirt is starting to yellow. (casual)

What is a yellow card?

In sports, イエローカード is a yellow card. In daily speech, イエローカード can also mean a warning.

遅刻ちこくが多おおくて、上司じょうしからイエローカードをもらった。 — I've been late a lot, so my boss gave me a warning. (casual, joking)

What yellow things will you see in Japan?

Yellow appears on safety items: 黄色きいろい帽子ぼうし (yellow hats) worn by young schoolchildren so drivers can see them, and 点字てんじブロック (てんじブロック), tactile paving that is usually yellow and used on platforms and sidewalks to guide and warn people with visual impairments.

点字てんじブロックの上うえに立たたないでください。 — Please don't stand on the tactile paving. (polite)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 黄きいシャツ or 茶ちゃいかばん. It is 黄色きいろいシャツ (or 黄色きいろのシャツ) and 茶色ちゃいろいかばん.
  • Reading 黄身きみ as おうみ. It is きみ.
  • Saying 黄色きいろいの傘かさ. Use 黄色きいろい傘かさ or 黄色きいろの傘かさ.

Practice

Try each answer before opening it. These ask you to use the same ideas on new words and scenes.

1. Say "I'm wearing a yellow raincoat."

Show answer

黄色きいろいレインコートを着きている。 — 黄色きいろい before the noun.

2. Say "I have a brown bag." Which adjective form do you use?

Show answer

茶色ちゃいろいかばんを持もっている。 — 茶ちゃ needs 色いろ, just like 黄色きいろい.

Show answer

黄身きみが割われた。 — 黄身きみ is the yolk.

4. At a concert, a crowd cheers in deep voices. Is 黄色きいろい声こえ the right phrase?

Show answer

黄色きいろい帽子ぼうしの子こどもたちが道みちを渡わたっている。 — 黄色きいろい帽子ぼうし is a common sight on school mornings.

出でてきたばかりの芽めは黄緑色おうりょくしょくだ。 — 黄緑きみどり is yellow-green.

Show answer

古ふるいノートの紙かみが黄きばんだ。 — 黄きばむ is the word for yellowing with age. 黄色きいろっぽくなった (it became yellowish) also works.

10. Fix: 黄きいレモンを買かった。

Show answer

黄色きいろいレモンを買かった。 — 黄き cannot take い directly. Use 黄色きいろい.

FAQ

Why is a green traffic light called 青信号あおしんごう? 青あお covers both blue and green in older Japanese, and the traffic light kept that. The set is 赤信号あかしんごう, 黄信こうしん号ごう and 青信号あおしんごう.

How do you say "lemon yellow"? Name the thing and add 色いろ: レモン色いろ (レモンいろ). This works for many colors, like 空色そらいろ and 茶色ちゃいろ.

How do you say "blond hair"? Say 金髪きんぱつ (きんぱつ). Use this instead of describing the hair as 黄色きいろい.

How do you say "orange"? Use オレンジ色いろ (オレンジいろ). 橙色だいだいいろ (だいだいいろ) is also used, mostly in writing.
