Small talk in Japanese: 世間話せけんばなし, 雑談ざつだん, and the openers that actually work

"Small talk" in Japanese is 世間話せけんばなし (せけんばなし), light conversation about everyday things, or 雑談ざつだん (ざつだん), casual chatting. The classic opener is a comment about the weather with ね: 今日きょうは暑あついですね, "It's hot today, isn't it?" The goal is not information but agreement: そうですね, "It really is."

Many learners can introduce themselves and order food, then freeze when a neighbor, a coworker or a shop owner just wants to chat for a minute. That minute is 世間話せけんばなし, and it follows simple, repeatable patterns. This post gives you the words, the openers that work, the small reactions that keep it going, and a polite way to close. None of it is complicated grammar. It is mostly about knowing which few sentences people actually say.

What are the words for small talk in Japanese?

What is 世間話せけんばなし?

世間話せけんばなし (せけんばなし) is small talk about everyday topics: the weather, the season, the neighborhood, recent news. 世間せけん means "the world, society", and 話はなし means "talk", so it is literally "talk about the world around us".

近所きんじょの人ひとと世間話せけんばなしをしました。 — I made small talk with a neighbor. (polite, describing your day) ちょっと世間話せけんばなしでもしましょうか。 — Shall we chat for a bit? (polite, inviting light conversation)

The でも in the second sentence softens it: "small talk or something". It makes the invitation relaxed.

What is 雑談ざつだん?

雑談ざつだん (ざつだん) is casual chatting with no set topic. It is common at work for the chat before or after a meeting, and in streaming culture, a 雑談ざつだん配信はいしん is a stream where the host just talks.

会議かいぎの前まえに少すこし雑談ざつだんした。 — We chatted a bit before the meeting. (casual, office life) 今日きょうは雑談ざつだん配信はいしんです。 — Today's stream is just chatting. (casual, a streamer's opening)

The difference is small. 世間話せけんばなし points at topics everyone shares, like weather and news. 雑談ざつだん is any light, unplanned chat.

What about おしゃべり?

おしゃべり is chatting or chattering, and it can also describe a talkative person. It is warm and casual. Said about a person, it means "talkative", sometimes with a hint of teasing.

友達ともだちとカフェでおしゃべりした。 — I chatted with a friend at a café. (casual, a fun afternoon) 妹いもうとはおしゃべりだ。 — My younger sister is a chatterbox. (casual, describing personality)

Word Reading Meaning Feel
世間話せけんばなし せけんばなし small talk about everyday topics polite, adult
雑談ざつだん ざつだん casual chat, no set topic neutral, work and streaming
おしゃべり おしゃべり chatting; a chatterbox warm, casual
立ち話たちばなし たちばなし chatting while standing neighbors, hallways
井戸端会議いどばたかいぎ いどばたかいぎ neighborhood gossip session humorous

How do you start small talk in Japanese?

Why does everyone talk about the weather?

Because it is safe, shared and easy to agree with. The pattern is [weather comment] ですね. The ね at the end invites the other person to agree, and that agreement is the whole point.

今日きょうは暑あついですね。 — It's hot today, isn't it? (polite, summer opener) だいぶ寒さむくなりましたね。 — It's gotten quite cold, hasn't it? (polite, autumn or winter opener)

The expected answer is そうですね, "It really is", often followed by a little more: そうですね、もう秋あきですね, "It really is. It's already autumn." For the full weather vocabulary, see Japanese weather words.

What other openers work?

Season, recent events and simple questions about the other person's day.

最近さいきん、忙いそがしいですか? — Have you been busy lately? (polite, coworkers and acquaintances) 週末しゅうまつは何なにかしましたか? — Did you do anything over the weekend? (polite, a Monday classic) もうすぐお盆ぼんですね。 — It's almost Obon, isn't it? (polite, a seasonal comment)

For more ways to check in on someone, see how are you in Japanese. The common feature is that each opener is easy to answer in one sentence.

Which topics should you be careful with?

Money, age, religion and politics are usually avoided in light small talk with people you do not know well. Questions like 給料きゅうりょうはいくらですか (how much is your salary?) are as awkward in Japan as in many places. Questions about family and marriage are common between friends but can feel personal with new acquaintances.

How do you keep small talk going?

What are あいづち?

あいづち (相槌あいづち) are the small reactions you make while someone is talking: はい, ええ, へえ, そうなんですか, なるほど. In Japanese conversation they are frequent. Silence while someone talks can feel like you are not listening.

へえ、そうなんですか。 — Oh, really? (polite, interested) なるほど、確たしかに。 — I see, that's true. (polite, agreeing)

We explain なるほど and its cousins in I see in Japanese. If you need a second to think, filler words like えっと and そうですね help; see Japanese filler words.

How do you ask a follow-up question?

Pick up one word from the answer and ask about it. If someone says they went to the sea, ask 海うみですか!どこの海うみですか? This works because it shows you listened.

A: 週末しゅうまつは海うみに行いきました。 — I went to the sea on the weekend. (polite) B: いいですね!どこの海うみですか? — Nice! Which beach? (polite, a follow-up built from one word)

Beyond the basics

What is 立ち話たちばなし?

立ち話たちばなし (たちばなし) is chatting while standing, typically when you bump into someone on the street or in a hallway. The phrase 立ち話たちばなしもなんですから, "it's not ideal to keep talking standing up", is a polite way to invite someone inside or to sit down.

立ち話たちばなしもなんですから、中なかへどうぞ。 — Rather than talk standing here, please come in. (polite, inviting someone in)

What is 井戸端会議いどばたかいぎ?

井戸端会議いどばたかいぎ (いどばたかいぎ), literally "a meeting at the well", is a humorous phrase for neighbors gossiping together. In the past, people chatted while drawing water at a shared well. Today it describes, with a smile, people chatting at length outside a building or a school gate.

How do you end small talk politely?

Use a gentle closer like じゃあ、また or それでは、失礼しつれいします. Mentioning that you have to go softens it: そろそろ行いかないと, "I should get going soon".

じゃあ、そろそろ。また今度こんど! — Well, I'd better go. See you next time! (casual, friendly) それでは、失礼しつれいします。 — Well then, excuse me. (polite, work or neighbors)

For more ways to leave, see how to say goodbye in Japanese.

What is アイスブレイク?

アイスブレイク (ice break) is used in Japanese as a loanword for the opening chat that relaxes a meeting or class. You will hear it in business seminars and workshops: 最初さいしょにアイスブレイクをしましょう, "Let's start with an icebreaker." In everyday life, 世間話せけんばなし does the same job without the name.

Common mistakes

  • Answering 暑あついですね with a weather report. The ね asks for agreement, so そうですね is the expected first reply.
  • Leaving out あいづち. Long silence while someone talks can sound like you are not interested.
  • Starting with a heavy question. Money and age are poor openers with new acquaintances.
  • Ending the chat abruptly. Add a soft closer like じゃあ、また or それでは、失礼しつれいします.
  • Using 雑談ざつだん for a serious meeting. It means unplanned chat, so it sounds like you were not working.

Practice

Try each answer before opening it. Questions 2 and 3 are a pair: the opener and the reply it asks for.

1. Say "I made small talk with a neighbor."

Show answer

近所きんじょの人ひとと世間話せけんばなしをしました。 — 世間話せけんばなし is small talk about everyday topics.

2. Open small talk on a hot day.

Show answer

今日きょうは暑あついですね。 — the ね invites the other person to agree.

3. Someone says 今日きょうは暑あついですね. Give the expected first reply.

Show answer

そうですね。 — agreement is the point. You can add more after it. This is the pair to question 2.

4. Ask a coworker on Monday, "Did you do anything over the weekend?"

Show answer

週末しゅうまつは何なにかしましたか? — 何なにか means "anything", a light, easy question.

5. Someone tells you something surprising. React politely with interest.

Show answer

へえ、そうなんですか。 — a classic あいづち that shows you are listening.

6. Your friend says 週末しゅうまつは海うみに行いきました. Ask a follow-up.

Show answer

いいですね!どこの海うみですか? — pick up one word from the answer and ask about it.

7. Which word fits a stream where the host just chats: 雑談ざつだん or 世間話せけんばなし?

Show answer

雑談ざつだん — a 雑談ざつだん配信はいしん is a chatting stream with no set topic.

8. End a chat with a neighbor politely.

Show answer

それでは、失礼しつれいします。 — a soft, polite closer.

9. What is 立ち話たちばなし?

Show answer

Chatting while standing — usually when you bump into someone outside.

10. Is 給料きゅうりょうはいくらですか a good small talk opener with a new acquaintance?

Show answer

No. — money is usually avoided in light small talk. The weather or the weekend is safer.

Use a trial lesson to open a chat with a weather comment plus ね, like 今日きょうは暑あついですね, and keep the 世間話せけんばなし going for a minute.
