What are the school levels?
The usual path is 小学校 (6 years), 中学校 (3 years), 高校 (3 years), then 大学. 義務教育 (ぎむきょういく, compulsory education) covers 小学校 and 中学校. 専門学校 (vocational school) is another route, often chosen after 高校.

| 大学 | だいがく | university |
| 専門学校 | せんもんがっこう | vocational school |

For student words like 生徒 and 学生, see student in Japanese.
行く or 通う?
行く is going to school as a trip, on a given day. 通う (かよう) is going back and forth regularly, so it is the verb for where you are enrolled or where you commute.
| Situation | Verb | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Today's trip, or a one-time visit | 行く | 明日は学校に行く。 (I'm going to school tomorrow.) |
| Where you attend, over weeks or years | 通う | 歩いて学校に通っている。 (I walk to school regularly.) |
| Commuting to a place that is not school | 通う | ジムに通っている。 (I go to the gym regularly.) |
| A single visit to a place you do not attend | 行く | 友だちの学校に行った。 (I went to a friend's school.) |
The sentence 学校に通っている does not add "every day" on its own. To say it, add 毎日: 毎日歩いて学校に通っている. Many learners say 学校に行っている for "I attend school". It is understood, but 通っている sounds more natural for ongoing attendance.
What are the key school-life words?
What is 部活?
部活 (ぶかつ), short for 部活動, is club activities: sports or culture clubs after class. Many students spend a lot of time on them.
部活は何をしていた? — What club activity did you do? (casual) 高校ではバスケ部だった。 — I was on the basketball team in high school. (casual)
〜部 (〜ぶ) names a club: サッカー部, 美術部. 何部だった? is also a very common way to ask which club someone was in.
What does 放課後 mean?
放課後 (ほうかご) is the time after classes end.
放課後、友だちとカフェに行った。 — After school, I went to a cafe with friends. (casual)
What is 塾?
塾 (じゅく) is a cram school or private tutoring school, attended outside regular school, often before entrance exams.
中学生のとき、塾に通っていた。 — I went to cram school in junior high. (casual)
For homework words, see homework in Japanese.
Beyond the basics
What is 制服?
制服 (せいふく) is a school uniform, common in many junior high and high schools. Sailor-style uniforms are セーラー服.
うちの高校は制服がかわいかった。 — My high school's uniform was cute. (casual)
What do 登校 and 下校 mean?
登校 (とうこう) is going to school, and 下校 (げこう) is leaving school. They appear on signs and in school notices.
登校時間は八時半までです。 — You need to arrive by 8:30. (polite)
What does 転校 mean?
転校 (てんこう) is transferring to a new school. The 転校生 (てんこうせい, transfer student) is a classic anime character.
小学生のときに二回転校した。 — I changed schools twice in elementary school. (casual)
How do you say "I'm in X" for each school stage?
Add 生 (せい) to the school name to name the student: 小学校 becomes 小学生, 中学校 becomes 中学生, and so on. "I'm a ○○ student" is ○○生です.
| School | Reading | Person | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 小学校 | しょうがっこう | 小学生 | しょうがくせい |
| 中学校 | ちゅうがっこう | 中学生 | ちゅうがくせい |
| 高校 | こうこう | 高校生 | こうこうせい |
| 大学 | だいがく | 大学生 | だいがくせい |
| 大学院 | だいがくいん | 大学院生 | だいがくいんせい |
| 専門学校 | せんもんがっこう | 専門学校生 | せんもんがっこうせい |
高校 is the short form. The formal name is 高等学校 (こうとうがっこう), which you will see on school signs and certificates. 大学院 (だいがくいん) is graduate school, the level after 大学.
To say your year, count with 年生 (ねんせい): 一年生, 二年生, 三年生. Put the year after the stage.
大学2年生です。 — I'm a second-year university student. (polite) 姉は高校三年生で、今年受験だ。 — My older sister is a third-year high school student and has entrance exams this year. (casual)
For 専門学校, people usually say 専門学校に通っている or 専門学校の一年生です.
What are 先輩, 後輩, 同級生 and クラスメート?
先輩 (せんぱい) is someone ahead of you in school or in a club, and 後輩 (こうはい) is someone behind you. 同級生 (どうきゅうせい) is someone in the same year, and クラスメート is someone in the same class.
In Japanese school life, the 先輩/後輩 relationship is about year, not age, and it affects how people speak. A 後輩 usually uses polite forms to a 先輩, and addresses them as 〜先輩. Because anime is set in clubs, this pair appears constantly.
部活の先輩はやさしくて、いろいろ教えてくれた。 — My club seniors were kind and taught me many things. (casual) 後輩が入ってきたので、今年は少し緊張している。 — New juniors have joined, so I'm a little nervous this year. (casual) 彼は同級生だけど、クラスメートになったことはない。 — He's in my year, but we've never been in the same class. (casual)
同級生 means same grade, so a 同級生 may be in a different class. クラスメート means same class.
Common mistakes
- Calling high school 高学校. It is 高校 (こうこう).
- Using 大学校 for university. It is 大学.
- Reading 部活 as ぶかつどう in casual talk. 部活 is ぶかつ; 部活動 is the full form.
- Thinking 塾 is a regular school. It is extra study outside regular school.
- Adding "every day" to 通っている in your head. It means regular attendance. Add 毎日 if you mean every day.
