Ojousama meaning: お嬢様じょうさま, 箱入はこいり娘むすめ, and the rich girl in anime

お嬢様じょうさま (おじょうさま, ojousama) means "young lady." It is a polite word for someone else's daughter, and in everyday talk and anime it also means a girl from a rich, well-bred family. 箱入はこいり娘むすめ (はこいりむすめ, hakoiri musume), literally "a daughter kept in a box," is a sheltered daughter who was protected from the outside world.

The two words often travel together, because the anime ojousama is usually also a hakoiri musume: raised in a mansion, driven to school, and surprised by things everyone else takes for granted. But they are not the same word, and お嬢様じょうさま has a plain, polite use that has nothing to do with money.

The basics

What does お嬢様じょうさま literally mean?

Break it into three parts:

  • お — the polite prefix
  • 嬢じょう (じょう) — a young woman, a daughter
  • 様さま (さま) — the very polite name ending, the same one used for customers

So the word is roughly "honored young lady." The plain version, 嬢じょう, rarely appears alone in speech; お嬢じょうさん is the softer, more everyday form.

お嬢様じょうさまはおいくつですか。 — How old is your daughter? (polite, to a parent) かわいいお嬢じょうさんですね。 — What a lovely daughter you have. (friendly and polite)

When is お嬢様じょうさま just "your daughter"?

In polite speech, you do not call someone else's family members by the plain word. Your own daughter is 娘むすめ (むすめ). Someone else's daughter is お嬢じょうさん, or お嬢様じょうさま when you are being very formal — in a hotel, a wedding speech, or a letter. This is the same in-group and out-group rule you see in family words like 兄あに and お兄にいさん.

うちの娘むすめは十歳じゅうさいです。 — My daughter is ten. (your own family, plain word) お嬢様じょうさまのご結婚けっこん、おめでとうございます。 — Congratulations on your daughter's wedding. (formal, to the parents)

When does お嬢様じょうさま mean "rich girl"?

In casual talk, お嬢様じょうさま is also a label for a girl or woman who clearly grew up with money and good manners. It can be admiring or teasing, depending on tone.

彼女かのじょ、本物ほんもののお嬢様じょうさまらしいよ。 — Apparently she is a real rich girl. (gossip, らしい = "apparently") お嬢様じょうさま学校がっこうに通かよっていた。 — She went to a posh girls' school. (お嬢様じょうさま学校がっこう, a common set phrase)

Beyond the basics

What is a 箱入はこいり娘むすめ?

箱入はこいり means "kept in a box," like a precious object. A 箱入はこいり娘むすめ is a daughter who was protected so carefully that she has little experience of the outside world. It describes how she was raised, not how much money her family has.

彼女かのじょは箱入はこいり娘むすめで、一人ひとりで電車でんしゃに乗のったことがない。 — She was raised so sheltered that she has never ridden a train alone. (the classic image)

The word is a little old-fashioned and often a little teasing. Said to someone's face, it can sound like "you are naive," so be careful using it about a real person.

Is there a male version?

Yes. お坊ぼうちゃま (おぼっちゃま) or お坊ぼうちゃん is the male counterpart, "young master," and it has the same double use: polite for someone's son, and teasing for a rich boy who has never done his own laundry.

あいつ、お坊ぼうちゃんだから苦労くろうを知しらない。 — He is a rich kid, so he has never struggled. (teasing)

How does the anime ojousama talk?

Anime gives the ojousama a special way of speaking, sometimes called お嬢様じょうさま言葉ことば. The famous markers are ですわ and ですの at the end of sentences, and a loud laugh written おーっほっほ. Real young women in Japan almost never talk like this today; it is a character voice, like a butler saying "indeed, sir." The same goes for pronouns: the ojousama says わたくし, which you can compare in ore, boku and watashi.

わたくしに任まかせなさい。当然とうぜんですわ。 — Leave it to me. Naturally. (anime ojousama style, not real speech) こちらの紅茶こうちゃ、とても美味おいしいですの。 — This tea is very delicious. (ですの, a character-voice ending)

If you copy ですわ in real life, people will understand you are joking. That can be fun with friends, but not in a job interview. The same gap exists for あらあら, the older-sister catchphrase: real mothers say it when a toddler spills juice, and ara ara traces the teasing image to one type of anime character.

What about 令嬢れいじょう?

令嬢れいじょう (れいじょう) is a formal written word for "the daughter of a distinguished family." You will see it in news and in light novel titles, where 悪役あくやく令嬢れいじょう, "the villainess noble daughter," has become its own genre.

社長しゃちょうの令嬢れいじょうが結婚けっこんした。 — The company president's daughter got married. (news style)

Common mistakes

  • Calling your own daughter お嬢様じょうさま. It sounds like you are praising your own family. Use 娘むすめ.
  • Using 箱入はこいり娘むすめ as a compliment. It usually means "sheltered" and can imply naive. It is not the same as "well-bred."
  • Thinking ですわ is normal feminine speech. In modern Japan it is mostly a character voice from anime and manga.
  • Assuming お嬢様じょうさま always means rich. In a shop or a hotel, お嬢様じょうさま can simply be a polite way to address a girl.
  • Using お嬢様じょうさま for a man. The male word is お坊ぼうちゃま or お坊ぼうちゃん.

Which word do you need?

Word Reading Meaning Feel
娘むすめ むすめ my daughter plain, your own family
お嬢じょうさん おじょうさん your daughter, young lady polite, friendly
お嬢様じょうさま おじょうさま your daughter (very polite), rich girl formal, or casual label
箱入はこいり娘むすめ はこいりむすめ a sheltered daughter old-fashioned, teasing
令嬢れいじょう れいじょう daughter of a distinguished family written, news
お坊ぼうちゃま おぼっちゃま young master, rich boy male counterpart

Practice

Try each question before opening the answer. Questions 2 and 3 are a pair: your own daughter and someone else's, two different words.

1. What are the three parts of お嬢様じょうさま?

Show answer

お+嬢じょう+様さま — the polite prefix, "young woman," and the very polite ending. Together, "honored young lady."

2. You are talking about your own daughter. Say "My daughter is ten."

Show answer

うちの娘むすめは十歳じゅうさいです。 — for your own family, use the plain word 娘むすめ.

3. You are asking a parent about their daughter. Say "How old is your daughter?" politely.

Show answer

お嬢様じょうさまはおいくつですか。 — someone else's daughter gets the polite word. お嬢じょうさん is also fine in friendly speech.

4. What does 箱入はこいり娘むすめ literally mean?

Show answer

A daughter kept in a box — protected like a precious object, so she knows little of the outside world.

5. Is 箱入はこいり娘むすめ about money?

Show answer

No. It is about how sheltered she was raised. A family does not need to be rich to raise a 箱入はこいり娘むすめ.

6. What is the male counterpart of お嬢様じょうさま?

Show answer

お坊ぼうちゃま (or お坊ぼうちゃん) — polite for someone's son, and teasing for a rich boy.

7. A character says 当然とうぜんですわ. What does the ですわ tell you?

Show answer

She is written as an anime ojousama. ですわ is a character-voice ending, not how most real women speak today.

8. Which word would you expect in a news headline about a company president's daughter?

Show answer

令嬢れいじょう — the formal written word for the daughter of a distinguished family.

During a trial lesson, describe a rich-girl character from anime as お嬢様じょうさま and a sheltered daughter as 箱入はこいり娘むすめ, and practise how to refer to someone else's daughter.

FAQ

What does ojousama mean in English? "Young lady." It is a very polite word for someone else's daughter, and a casual label for a girl from a wealthy, well-mannered family.

Is ojousama a compliment? It can be. "You seem like an ojousama" often means elegant and well-mannered. With a teasing tone it can also mean spoiled or out of touch.

What is the difference between お嬢様じょうさま and お嬢じょうさん? お嬢じょうさん is softer and more everyday. お嬢様じょうさま is more formal, and it is the one used for the rich-girl image.

What does hakoiri musume mean? A sheltered daughter, raised so carefully that she has little experience of the world. It is slightly old-fashioned and often teasing.

Do real Japanese women say ですわ? Very rarely today. It survives mostly in anime, manga and as a joke. Some older speakers used a softer わ at the end of sentences, but the ojousama ですわ is a character voice.

What is 悪役あくやく令嬢れいじょう? A light novel and anime genre: "the villainess noble daughter," usually a girl reborn as the villain of a story she knows.

The ojousama is one of the first character types students notice in anime, and the questions usually start with ですわ and end with why お嬢様じょうさま is also the polite way to ask about someone's daughter.
