Habit in Japanese: 習慣しゅうかん (しゅうかん) vs 癖くせ (くせ), 口癖くちぐせ, and クセが強つよい

"Habit" in Japanese is 習慣しゅうかん (しゅうかん) when it means a routine you keep, like exercising every morning. When it means a personal quirk or a bad habit, like biting your nails, the word is 癖くせ (くせ). A phrase someone says all the time is their 口癖くちぐせ (くちぐせ).

English "habit" covers both the good routines you build on purpose and the little tics you do without noticing. Japanese splits them, and the split is useful: 習慣しゅうかん sounds intentional and often positive, while 癖くせ sounds unconscious and often a little negative. 癖くせ also has some fun extended uses, like 癖くせになる, "addictive", and クセが強つよい, "very distinctive". This post covers both.

What is the difference between 習慣しゅうかん and 癖くせ?

What does 習慣しゅうかん mean?

習慣しゅうかん (しゅうかん) is a habit or routine: something you do regularly, often on purpose. It can also mean a social custom.

毎朝まいあさ走はしるのが習慣しゅうかんです。 — Running every morning is my habit. (polite) 寝ねる前まえに本ほんを読よむ習慣しゅうかんをつけたい。 — I want to get into the habit of reading before bed. (casual, a goal)

習慣しゅうかんをつける and 習慣しゅうかんにする both mean "to make it a habit".

What does 癖くせ mean?

癖くせ (くせ) is a personal quirk or habit, often unconscious and often a little bad.

爪つめをかむ癖くせがある。 — I have a habit of biting my nails. (casual) 悪わるい癖くせを直なおしたい。 — I want to fix a bad habit. (casual)

癖くせ is often written in katakana, クセ, especially in casual and online writing.

How do you choose between them?

If you do it on purpose as a routine, use 習慣しゅうかん. If you do it without thinking, use 癖くせ.

日記にっきを書かく習慣しゅうかんがある。 — I have a habit of keeping a diary. (a deliberate routine) 髪かみを触ふる癖くせがある。 — I have a habit of touching my hair. (an unconscious quirk)

Word Reading Kind of habit Feel
習慣しゅうかん しゅうかん routine, custom deliberate, often good
癖くせ / クセ くせ quirk, tic unconscious, often bad
口癖くちぐせ くちぐせ catchphrase something you always say
癖くせになる くせになる addictive positive, about food or things
早起はやおき はやおき getting up early a common good 習慣しゅうかん

What other habit words are there?

What is 口癖くちぐせ?

口癖くちぐせ (くちぐせ), "mouth habit", is a phrase someone says all the time.

「まあいいか」が彼かれの口癖くちぐせだ。 — "Oh well" is his catchphrase. (casual)

Anime characters often have famous 口癖くちぐせ, like a sentence ending they always use; see だってばよ for one example.

What does 癖くせになる mean?

癖くせになる (くせになる) means "addictive" or "habit-forming", usually about a taste or experience you want again. It is praise.

この辛つらさ、癖くせになる。 — This spiciness is addictive. (casual, a food review)

For taste words like 辛つらい, see Japanese taste words.

What does クセが強つよい mean?

クセが強つよい (くせがつよい) means "very distinctive" or "quirky": a strong flavor, an unusual personality, a peculiar style. It can be praise or a polite warning.

このチーズはクセが強つよい。 — This cheese has a very strong, distinctive flavor. (casual) クセが強つよいキャラが好すき。 — I like quirky characters. (casual)

Beyond the basics

How do you say "break a habit"?

Say 癖くせを直なおす (くせをなおす), "fix a habit", or 習慣しゅうかんをやめる, "quit a habit".

夜更よふかしの習慣しゅうかんをやめたい。 — I want to quit my habit of staying up late. (casual)

夜更よふかし (よふかし) is staying up late. Its opposite, 早起はやおき (はやおき), is getting up early.

What does 習慣しゅうかん mean as a custom?

習慣しゅうかん also means a social custom, like bowing or taking off shoes indoors.

日本にほんでは家いえで靴くつを脱ぬぐ習慣しゅうかんがある。 — In Japan there's a custom of taking off shoes at home. (neutral)

For more on visiting homes, see お邪魔じゃまします.

What is 三日坊主みっかぼうず?

三日坊主みっかぼうず (みっかぼうず), "a three-day monk", is someone who gives up a new habit after just a few days.

また三日坊主みっかぼうずになっちゃった。 — I gave up after a few days again. (casual, self-mocking)

Common mistakes

  • Calling an unconscious tic a 習慣しゅうかん. Tics and quirks are 癖くせ.
  • Calling a planned routine a 癖くせ. Routines you build on purpose are 習慣しゅうかん.
  • Thinking 癖くせになる is negative. It usually means "addictive" in a good way.
  • Saying 習慣しゅうかんを作つくる. The natural phrases are 習慣しゅうかんをつける or 習慣しゅうかんにする.
  • Reading 口癖くちぐせ as くちくせ. It is くちぐせ.
