Gold in Japanese: 金きん (きん), 金色きんいろ, 金きんメダル, 金きん継つぎ, and 沈黙ちんもくは金きん

"Gold" in Japanese is 金きん (きん), and the color gold is 金色きんいろ (きんいろ). A gold medal is 金きんメダル, blond hair is 金髪きんぱつ (きんぱつ), and 金きん継つぎ (きんつぎ) is the art of repairing broken pottery with gold. The same kanji 金きん also means money (お金かね, おかね) and appears in 金曜日きんようび (きんようび), Friday.

金きん is one of the most useful kanji to know, because it shows up in three very different places: precious metal, money, and the calendar. In each, the reading changes. Gold also has some lovely cultural ideas attached, like turning cracks into beauty with 金きん継つぎ. This post covers the color, the metal, and the expressions around them.

  • Saying 金きんい. Use 金色きんいろの or 金きんの.
  • Reading 金髪きんぱつ as きんかみ. It is きんぱつ.
  • Confusing 金曜日きんようび (Friday) and 土曜日どようび (Saturday). 金きん is Friday.
  • Using 黄金おうごん for everyday gold. 金きん or 金色きんいろ is normal.
