Forget in Japanese: 忘わすれる (わすれる), 忘わすれた vs 忘わすれてた, and 忘れ物わすれもの

"Forget" in Japanese is 忘わすれる (わすれる): 名前なまえを忘わすれました means "I forgot the name". "I totally forgot (until now)" is 忘わすれてた, and "Don't forget" is 忘わすれないで. An item you left behind is a 忘れ物わすれもの (わすれもの).

忘わすれる is one of the most useful verbs for a beginner, because you will forget things in Japanese, often in the middle of a sentence. It is also a verb with a small but important tense trick: 忘わすれた and 忘わすれてた are not the same, and Japanese speakers switch between them all the time. This post covers the verb, the forms you need, and the everyday words built on it, from lost-and-found to blanking on a word.

How do you use 忘わすれる?

How do you conjugate 忘わすれる?

忘わすれる is a Group 2 (る-verb), so it is regular: 忘わすれます, 忘わすれて, 忘わすれた, 忘わすれない.

すみません、名前なまえを忘わすれました。 — Sorry, I forgot your name. (polite, honest) 宿題しゅくだいを忘わすれた! — I forgot my homework! (casual, panic)

The thing you forget takes を. For more on verb groups, see Japanese verb groups.

What is the difference between 忘わすれた and 忘わすれてた?

忘わすれた means "I forgot (and it's gone)". 忘わすれてた, short for 忘わすれていた, means "I had forgotten (until just now)". When something suddenly comes back to you, 忘わすれてた is the natural reaction.

あ、今日きょうは会議かいぎだった!忘わすれてた! — Oh, today's the meeting! I totally forgot! (casual, remembering suddenly) パスワードを忘わすれました。 — I forgot my password. (polite, it's still gone)

This is the same ている logic as in the ている form: 忘わすれていた is the state of having forgotten, which ends the moment you remember.

How do you say "Don't forget"?

Say 忘わすれないで (casual) or 忘わすれないでください (polite). To remind someone to do something, use 〜のを忘わすれないで.

鍵かぎを忘わすれないでね。 — Don't forget your keys. (casual, caring) メールを送おくるのを忘わすれないでください。 — Please don't forget to send the email. (polite, a reminder)

Japanese often says "don't forget to" where English says "remember to". We compare the two in remember in Japanese.

How do you say "I forgot to do something"?

Use [verb dictionary form] のを忘わすれた. The の turns the action into a thing you forgot.

電気でんきを消けすのを忘わすれた。 — I forgot to turn off the light. (casual) 薬くすりを飲のむのを忘わすれていました。 — I had forgotten to take my medicine. (polite)

What words come from 忘わすれる?

What is 忘れ物わすれもの?

忘れ物わすれもの (わすれもの) is something you left behind, or the act of forgetting to bring something. 忘れ物わすれものをする means "to leave something behind".

忘れ物わすれものはありませんか? — Have you left anything behind? (polite, a common announcement) 電車でんしゃに忘れ物わすれものをしてしまった。 — I left something on the train. (casual, regret)

The first sentence is what you hear when getting off trains and buses, and what teachers say before students go home. Station lost-and-found counters often have 忘れ物わすれもの in their name, so it is a word worth recognizing.

What is 置おき忘わすれる?

置おき忘わすれる (おきわすれる) means "to leave something somewhere and forget it there". 置おく is "to put", so it is literally "put and forget".

カフェに傘かさを置おき忘わすれた。 — I left my umbrella at the café. (casual)

What does 忘わすれっぽい mean?

忘わすれっぽい (わすれっぽい) means "forgetful", a trait of a person. 〜っぽい adds "tends to be".

最近さいきん、忘わすれっぽくて困こまる。 — Lately I've been so forgetful, it's a problem. (casual, self-aware)

For the difference between 忘わすれっぽい and 忘わすれがち, see 〜がち and 〜やすい.

What does ど忘わすれ mean?

ど忘わすれ (どわすれ) is when you suddenly blank on something you know well, like a familiar word or name. It is the "tip of the tongue" moment.

ど忘わすれしちゃった。何なんだっけ? — I've blanked on it. What was it again? (casual, frustrated)

This one is a gift for language learners. In the middle of a conversation, ど忘わすれしました is a perfectly natural way to buy time. You can add 〜っけ to ask "what was it again?"

Beyond the basics

What does 忘わすれられない mean?

忘わすれられない is "unforgettable" or "I can't forget". It is the potential negative of 忘わすれる, and it is very common in emotional talk.

あの日ひのことは忘わすれられない。 — I can't forget that day. (casual, emotional) 忘わすれられない旅行りょこうになりました。 — It became an unforgettable trip. (polite, a happy memory)

How does 忘わすれる sound in anime?

Anime is full of 忘わすれない, "I won't forget", as a promise. Characters say it at farewells and before battles.

お前まえのことは絶対ぜったいに忘わすれない。 — I'll never forget you. (casual male speech, a farewell)

The reverse, 忘わすれて, "forget it", is what a character says to take back something they regret saying: 今いまの、忘わすれて, "forget what I just said".

What does 物忘ものわすれ mean?

物忘ものわすれ (ものわすれ) is general forgetfulness, often age-related. 物忘ものわすれが激はげしい means "very forgetful", and people say it about themselves with a laugh.

Common mistakes

  • Always reaching for 忘わすれてた. When you forgot to bring something, plain 忘わすれた is still natural; 忘わすれてた fits best when a memory suddenly resurfaces.
  • Saying 消けすを忘わすれた. Add の: 消けすのを忘わすれた.
  • Translating "remember to" with 覚おぼえる. Use 忘わすれないで.
  • Marking the place with で. "I left it at home" is 家いえに忘わすれた or 家いえに置おき忘わすれた, with に for the place.
  • Saying 忘れ物わすれものしました without を. In writing, 忘れ物わすれものをしました is more complete.
