Foot in Japanese: 足あし (あし), 足あしが速はやい, 足あしを引っ張ひっぱる, and 裸足はだし

"Foot" in Japanese is 足あし (あし), and the same word also means "leg". Japanese usually does not split the two in daily speech. 足あしが速はやい means "fast runner", 裸足はだし (はだし) is "barefoot", and the station announcement 足元あしもとに気きをつけて means "watch your step". 足あし also stars in idioms: 足あしを洗あらう ("wash your feet") means to quit a bad lifestyle.

Feet carry you around, and in Japanese they also carry a lot of meaning: money, teamwork, and leaving your past behind. If you know a handful of 足あし expressions, you can understand announcements, sports talk and office complaints. This post covers the body part, everyday uses, and the idioms people actually say.

Common mistakes

  • Using 足あしを引っ張ひっぱる for "joke with someone". It means to hold someone back.
  • Reading 裸足はだし as らあし. It is はだし.
  • Looking for a separate everyday word for "leg". 足あし covers both in speech.
  • Forgetting that 足たりない uses 足あし. The kanji helps you read it.
  • Taking 足あしを洗あらう literally. It means quitting a bad lifestyle.
