Fly in Japanese: 飛とぶ (とぶ), 飛とべ, 飛行機ひこうき, and 時間じかんが経へつのが早はやい

"To fly" in Japanese is 飛とぶ (とぶ): birds, planes and balls all 飛とぶ. The te-form is 飛とんで, and the shouted command "Fly!" is 飛とべ! (とべ). To fly somewhere as a passenger, Japanese usually says 飛行機ひこうきで行いく (ひこうきでいく), "go by plane". "Time flies" is 時間じかんが経へつのが早はやい or 光陰こういん矢やの如ごとし.

飛とぶ is a vivid verb that shows up in nature, travel and sports anime, where characters leap and soar. It also has a sound-alike, 跳とぶ, for jumping. And when you fly on vacation, Japanese focuses on the plane rather than the verb. This post covers all of it, with the forms you need.

道みちに飛び出とびださないで。 — Don't run out into the road. (casual, a warning)

Common mistakes

  • Saying 飛とびて. The te-form is 飛とんで.
  • Saying 大阪おおさかに飛とんだ for a normal trip. 飛行機ひこうきで行いった is more natural.
  • Using 飛とぶ for "time flies" directly. Say 時間じかんが経へつのが早はやい.
  • Reading 飛行機ひこうき as とびこうき. It is ひこうき.
  • Thinking 飛とばす only means "make fly". It also means "skip".
